Re: CEV is Bullshi...

May I be the first to say how bullsh*t this new CEV craft is.  First off, we shouldn't make a jack-of-all-trades spacecraft, it's just bad principle. Space, as a term of destination, remember, is a huge generalisation.

Redstreak: Beg to differ on re. "boredom." Your six months of boredom can be aleviated by eg. gardening fresh vegetables a percentage of every 24-hour period. Then there's keeping fit. And don't forget sex, changing partners, and entertainment downloaded from Earth. Not to mention, training for orbiting, landing, support,  and emergency procedures once in Mars-space. Not only that, but there's interdisciplinary teaching each other. Time won't be a problem going out. Coming back, optimistically there'll be new information to be sorted out, samples to be prepared, possible hairy scarcity, a la Apollo 13, situations to be conjured up and prepared for. And then there's always gardening on the way back, not to mention keeping alive any life samples found on Mars....

Orion CEV Losing 1,000 Pounds With New Design

NASA's Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) will lose about 1,000 pounds of the mass it carries to orbit with a newly adopted redesign of the service module that flies just aft of the pressurized crew capsule.

Orion also may save some more weight from an ongoing redesign of the boost protective cover that shelters the capsule during its ascent through the lower atmosphere, according to Skip Hatfield, NASA's CEV project manager.
