I looked at the members list, and I noticed that a good deal of our "members" have "spammerish" names.
I deleted like a dozen of them yesterday before it got too arduous. I'm wondering what you guys think. How can we combat this. Would be be necessarily evil to require people post a few times legitimately or their account gets deleted? A "hello" thread? Or what? I dunno.
It looks dauntnig deleting these spammer looking names from our database (at least the ones who have never seemed to post). I'm wondering how bad it really is.

May be a sign-up notice like this would help:
Attention spammers: any links you post will be submitted to abuse@google.com for removal from their database. A single post here will ruin your entire campaign.
Of course, it won't help if they don't speak english.

Josh, I am an administrator on a non-english aquarium-related forum. There, I require members to make at least 1 post in one month after they registered, otherwise I delete the account. We have a special introductory section, where every user is required to talk a little bit about him(her)self and his aquarium, experience with certain species, etc.
And about spammers: we've seen that most spammers come from a certain IP address. For example this week: 209.160.65.49, with the domains
wprihwpihwrhwpir.org
fldojhwprhwp.info
pfjhpw2ihpjhr.info
pjhgwprjhwprh.info
lofhpwirhgpwirhg.info
Everything that was ever posted from that IP was spam (and it wasn't a human, but a bot). I just banned that IP 4 days ago, and all email addresses from those domains, and we received no more spam and there isn't any registered user with "spamish" names for 4 days. I don't know how much time this will last, but usually it's a week or so.
You can prune the memberlist here if you want, deleting users with no posts ever and registered, let's say, at least 3-4 months ago.
Just my opinion.

It's not clear that the extra hassle for new users is worth it. Once this becomes standard the spammers will work around it by making the required post. A more effective way would be to PM new users that don't post within a fixed time and ask them to "intelligently" acknowledge their interest, this will be much harder for bots to handle. It may also have the positive side effect of engaging them in the debate.
