Thanks, gottem. If anyone knows of any spam killing solution I'd be happy to work on it.

I think you've done everything Josh. The next step would be to band together with other phpBB admins to make a blacklist. You'd think it'd have already been done, but a quick search didn't turn up anything. It is a major problem, and the phpBB developers are working on it, but our spammers seem to be real people rather than bots - that's hard to defend against automatically. If you like, I'll start posting the IP addresses of the spammers, but if you ban blocks of IP addresses you'll get innocent people as well. You could post a legal notice and try suing - lots of US states award $500 per spam - but if the IPs trace outside the US then you may have trouble collecting.

Some blog site block the first post passing it though a clearance process of review.
This will catch those that have no initial attempt to be forth right with blogging about space.
I have been keeping watch on the new user names since they seem to be tipping there hand as to there intent.
The other way some are fighting this is to also require a type key as a means as well.

Indeed, especially when their ISP uses dinamic IPs. Just check for example the IPs I posted from, there are over 30....

You know what's messed up? I totally scrutinized that persons post for a few minutes there, and just thought that maybe they were just a strange person posting a kinda funny joke for their first post. Man, can't believe I missed that. Deleted now.

Saw the links when I did a quote check but could not see where they were in the text. I need better eyes.

Just so you know: the links were hidden, and I don't think that guy actually was counting on some member to click on them (too small...). He was just trying to promote all those sites. Every time Google indexes this forum, sites which have links posted here get a little bit of rank boost for those specific words.

Is there a better way to track new user ID's so as to catch these quicker.
Also we have a lot on them that have never posted.
Should we send out a generic notice to see if they are real and still interested.
Hello SpaceNutNewmars it appears that you have not posted on our forums in several weeks, why not take a few moments to ask a question, help provide a solution or just engage in a conversation with another member in any one of our forums?
