We all know those Venusians: Doing their hair in shock waves, smoking electrical coronas, wearing Van Allen belts and resting their tiny elbows on a Geiger counter...

favorite quote of mine,
"and still it moves" - Galileo
it means a lot of things; the earth moves and so does science; as Jacob Bronowski comments, "Galileo mentioned that you can bottle him up, but science will most likelly move northward; and so it did with Kepler who Galileo knew about."

i'd also point out that entropy is at work in our machine powered agriculturalism; molecular manufacturing seems about the only thing that can really save us if we just stay here on earth, but that just seems to get harder and harder(myself, I see Feynman's top down approach as the only real way to build Drexlers strained and stressed out molecules to ever get built; they should be able to start making molecular sized stm's around 2020; that's when serious work in mnt will start). Why take the chance?
And of yes, about the theory of all the eggs in one basket; if humanity gets wiped out by an asteroid on one planet, there'll be humanity in another basket able to resupply the other backet if one should get taken out somehow; i don't think you understand the theory.
