Re: Detecting Asteroids

For some fun locating and chasing large asteroids in deep space. I would put on a balance pivot a rod of metal. When ever the rod would dip it would point to a asteroid the gravity would pull it over to the direction of it. yikes

Re: Detecting Asteroids

Unless I missed your point, that is like witching for water with a devining rod.
Asteroids and comets have very little gravity. so the rod likely will not point due to gravity especially if the pivot point is in free fall.
We can however put telescopes in solar orbit with CCD = charge coupled display. When a directon is viewed a day or two later close objects will have moved with respect to the more distant stars.  Most of these will be an asteroid, comet, or space ship. Oculations will be rarely detected by this method, but occulations give valuable information.  Neil

Re: Detecting Asteroids

Moderator, do we have to have these "creative" posts from Bentherdonthat clutterring up the technical areas of the forum? I see they have now escaped from the Inteligent  Alien Life section; The Martian Chronicles area would be better suited for all of them.

Re: Detecting Asteroids

Moderator,

:?  Looks like I'm the only one around with moderation errr... privileges around, ATM...

... And my moderator function was/is basically to weed out spammers....

New Mars is very lenient regarding posting stuff, as long as the posts stay somewhat civil in nature (and even then...)

So I don't feel like I have the right privileges to start weeding Bender's stuff...

Of course, if it gets out of hand... But in this particular case, I don't see much of a real problem. I've seen far more harebrained ideas floating around here...

Re: Detecting Asteroids

Maybe not delete them, just move them to more appropriate threads. Or make a new one and put them there.
