Re: Hubble and the Crisis Before NASA

Zubrin writes about NASA, Hubble, Griffin and spunk.

It is the irony of Griffin's tenure that a man so committed and so suited to lead the agency to the Moon, Mars, and beyond should be forced by circumstances to take his turn at the helm before the program can truly begin. Yet, like Moses, Griffin can at least lead his people to the very edge of the Promised Land, should he muster the strength in himself and in them to do what is necessary.

I wonder if a few years back we had started HOP if we would be in this dilemma today? I know Zubrin is convinced about the value of the Hubble but I am not. Zubrin uses the aircraft carrier analogy but if it cost a billion to save the aircraft carrier and it was a wooden deck carrier from world war II and it put the soldiers at risk would it be worth it? I guess it depends on how much value you put on old things.
