Re: Russian Satellite Lost Due to Impact With Space Junk

The Russian Express-AM11 Telecomunication satellite on Wednesday the 24th at 6.55am Moscow time was impacted externally and the Satellite failed. It has lost its Geostationery orbit and proper rotation.

Spacedaily Russian Telecom Satelite Fails After Sudden Impact

Is this the first recorded satellite failure due to space Junk. Certainly the Shuttle and ISS have recieved impacts.

That is an awful high orbit to have space junk in.

How do they know there was an external impact?

How do they know there was an external impact?

imparted mass times velocity vector can be determined from change of orbit.

Maybe satellites need an onboard webcam for a better look.

Re: Russian Satellite Lost Due to Impact With Space Junk

How do they know there was an external impact?

Probably from the fact that the Satelite has lost its orbit and the correct spin it had. They know how much fuel was on board they know which systems are working and where failures occur and they can tell what goes wrong. An Impact would be easily discovered by following the damage and the direction it came from. The delta V change tells how much mass the object struck at. Since they know what effects a component or series of component failures have then it allows them to deduce what caused the damage.

An External source for the damage would give the damage track like a triangle from point of impact as the initial impact carries on but blasting apart components causing shrapnel to spray out causing secondary damage and so on. Internal explosions give circular type damage tracks from the initial point.

Okay, well we are at it how do we know it was space junk and not something natural?

Russians may have accurate pilot/reference/doppler data to give finer resolution of change of orbit and satellite rotation.

Maybe fine resolution gyro and acceleration data ?

Alien from Alpha Centuary practice shooting ?

Re: Russian Satellite Lost Due to Impact With Space Junk

Telemetry showed the failure, which occurred at 6:55 a.m. Moscow Time, was caused by "a sudden external impact on the spacecraft," RSCC said in a statement. The cause most probably was space garbage of unknown origin. The result was instantaneous depressurization of the satellite's thermal control system fluid circuit, followed by "a sudden outburst of the heat-carrying agent."

If this is true then how would they separate the effects of the depressurization of the fluid (that would also change the spin) and the outburst (which would change the trajectory and cause more spin)? They would have to be monitoring the satellite's orbit extremely closely to determine that it was an external impact.

Re: Russian Satellite Lost Due to Impact With Space Junk

Telemetry showed the failure

Not "Telemetry had failed"
Sytem status was reported with individual sensor readouts.
In addition, possibly the data clock phase shifts ?
