This AP story today has the names and brief bios of the eleven new astronauts just selected by NASA. There are 9 men and two women, could any of them be among the first Mars crew?
Note that Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger is only 30, so she could well be the first woman on Mars! Maybe with her will be be Christopher J. Cassidy who is just 35.

At least she has a geology degree, so I'd be very happy to have her on the first mission. Remember the last Moon mission, at last a real geologist on the moon, Schmitt was awesome... I still occasionally go to the Nasa site where the audio is stored to revel in those great, very inspired descriptions he made.
I feel i have heard that name before... But where?

We need to end the educator astronaut program now! It is idiotic, it was s neat PR trick when we thought that the space shuttle was going to be the 737 of space, but now that we are actually doing real exploration missions again, fire the teachers, send them back to school, and free up space for people who are actually qualified.

How about Hillary Clinton? Asumming it's a one way trip with insufficent life support and a nuclear thermal upper stage which is actually a mislabled thermonuclear device. (in the 20mt range)

There is a strong case for sending an all woman crew: less weight and smaller body size; less food, air and water needed. Sending a politician might be the answer to getting funding, it worked with John Glenn.

Gee Purdue, why don't you tell us how you really feel?
Seriously, we should compare notes.
"Yes, I was going to give this astronaut selection my best shot, I was determined when the NASA proctologist looked up my ass, he would see pipes so dazzling he would ask the nurse to get his sunglasses."

I just had a quick read up,
and I get the feeling that these guys aren't going on some long duration mission to set up a Mars colony, these guys are just going to test out the CEV, pick out a nice lunar landing site and plant flags on the Moon to mark Armstrong & Alrdin's anniversary.
They ain't going to Mars but good on them for stepping up to the mission, its about time people started thinking of sending robots and manned flights to the Moon again.
I wish them well
and look forward to see America on the Moon again ( last man was Eugene Cernan of '72 and last robotic-craft was Lunar Prospector almost a decade ago ! )

I like the idea of sending George Bush and his entire administration to Mars. The best part of Mars being out there, is the fact that it out there and get those Neo-Cons out from down here. But, then George Bush might declare war on those Martians and start an interstellar war teach them bad English. So maybe that not a good idea.

Larry,
Sigh, I was hoping this would be a space relevant thread, not somewhere for naive juvenile comments. Hopefully the moderator will move the above and this reply to another area of the board.
