Wow that much ice cap shrinkage...
And there is more with the effects of global warming that shows up as a result as a cascading effect on the land, vegetation, animals, weather and human systems as well.
With all the evidence of change, especially in the arctic, it's crazy that we still have people denying global warming.
It's a lie

I think an average global temperature rise has been well established. I believe the dispute is over what is causing it and if/how much it will continue to rise in the future.

If one had a complete record of temperature cycles we could see if there is a pattern to them. Some of that record may still exist at the bottom of the oceans in the form of methane ice.
Scientists Gain New Insights Into 'Frozen' Methane Beneath Ocean Floor an ice-like substance hidden beneath the seafloor off Canada's western coast.
Gas hydrate, a mixture of water and mostly methane, is believed to occur under the world's oceans in great abundance, but it quickly "melts" once removed from the high pressure and cold temperatures of its natural environment, making it very challenging to recover and analyze.
"We're interested in gas hydrate because we believe these deposits have played an important role in ancient global climate change,"
Only after some time to analyze the core samples will we either have answers or just more questions.

Modeling Of Long-Term Fossil Fuel Consumption Shows 14.5 Degree Hike In Temperature
If humans continue to use fossil fuels in a business as usual manner for the next several centuries, the polar ice caps will be depleted, ocean sea levels will rise by seven meters and median air temperatures will soar
Lawrence Livermore modeled carbon emissions and climate change from pre-industrial levels (1870) through 2300. This animation shows how the present (year 2000) global mean surface temperature change of 0.8°C increases to 7.8°C by 2300. Land areas warm more than the oceans. Arctic and Antarctic regions warm more than the tropics. Note the extreme warming of more than 20°C over the Arctic by 2300.

It should be noted that this "study" assumes the burning of all possible fossil fuels, is replete with the phrase "but we didn't take into account" and uses words like "holistic."
Their projected vegetation map for high CO2 is interesting - most of the northern hemisphere becomes temperate forest and most of the southern hemisphere becomes tropical forest.

"The Vostok data shows that carbon dioxide levels usually rose AFTER a increase in temperature, not before. There was no way that any increase carbon dioxide was the cause of a rise in temperature."
Question is what caused the temperature rise, and the CO2 increase ?
Recently, industrial age CO2 contributed some, but temperature is several degrees below 32,000 years ago.

Question is what caused the temperature rise, and the CO2 increase ?
A 1991 Science article titled "solar activity closely associated with climate" showed that, unsurprisingly, solar activity is well correlated with global average temperature ...
http://www.tmgnow.com/repository/solar/lassen1.html
The big effect of the increased solar activity is in changing cloud cover. This is important because water vapor is 10000 times more effective as a greenhouse gas than CO2. Note that clouds are left out of most climate models because they are "too difficult."
http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/IASTP/43/
An increase of just 0.2% in the solar output could have the same affect as doubling the carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere.

Hmmm, when was the last time you read that in a newspaper?

Should we let alone can we control global warming effects since it would appear that a component of it is not man made or of his doings.
Model Helps Assess Ocean-Injection Strategy For Combating Greenhouse Effect
In searching for ways to counteract the greenhouse effect, some scientists have proposed capturing the culprit—carbon dioxide—as it is emitted from power plants, then liquefying the gas and injecting it into the ocean. But there are pitfalls in that plan.
Not sure that I would like the effects locally if the CO2 does escape from its burial locations.

In the ice core records, there is a steep drop 12,000 years after the peak. Then a rebound.
We are around 10.000 years after the peak.
Looks like things are cancelling out, but for how long ?
Long enough to miss the drop and bridge over to the rebound ?
There is a period of stability around current temperatures.
Past few glacial cycles, there was just a sharp peak.
If things get too cold, perhaps Methane belching could be induced ?

One could think of the placement of a ring in orbit to slow global warming as an attempt to teraform Earth as it were to our needs. Many Teraforming ideas of mirrors and more have been thought of as an attempt to warm the Martian planet.
A simular thought thou is to allow for more light to enter a once gloomy village in this article. The process of placing heliostats, essentially rotating mirrors, mounted on a hillside to grab sunshine off reflectors from the neighboring village of Kramsach. to create a dozen "hotspots" -- areas not much bigger than a front yard scattered through the town, where people can gather and soak up rays.
Mirrors to banish village's winter darkness
EU to foot half the cost of project set to bright light to Austria's Rattenberg
It says the reflector technology is now advanced enough to justify the company's first attempt to bring sunshine into a village.
It's costly, however. The European Union is footing half the $2.4 million bill, and the company says it will pay the $600,000 cost of planning the project, gambling that success will attract more business.

This is an old thread but when I saw this and its appropiateness just had to resurect.
Longer airline flights to solve global warming
Though an Old article the principle is that since long flights at high altitude leaves contrails that are a recognised source of Global dimming (less sunlight arriving on the surface) if this was to be done over the poles more frequently it would actually decrease tempatures there to the point the planet will cool.

The space ring (top of this thread) is even cheaper, but with this sort of money up for grabs, why not go for global climate control? Longer growing seasons, shorter winters, fewer hurricanes. Not only would global GDP damage be prevented, but it would be enhanced.
