Re: Should God be Exported to Mars?

I somewhat agree with SpaceNut that 'someone will find tablets' and start a new religion. Joseph Smith founded the Mormons in New York, then went westward to found the state of Utah. The Puritans were founded in Britain, left for the Netherlands, but effectually (to perserve culture) moved to the Americas to establish a home. Personally, I think that religion will go with humans everywhere, some religions will their communities in one area, another religion elsewhere. I also think it will be the same with political and philosophical views: maybe Communist/Socialist regime in the north, and Capitalist republic in the south. I see it like the Greek city-states, but I guess history will judge the impact of religion on the Mars colonies, and elsewhere as we branch out.

Re: Should God be Exported to Mars?

As near as I can tell, most U.S. astronauts are members of churches, and there's no shortage of astronauts who are evangelicals. So yes, religion will go to Mars.

Religion will change on Mars, too. Keeping the Sabbath holy will involve defining the Sabbath. Is it every seven Martian days/sols? If so, after a month one will be celebrating it on terrestrial Saturday; a month later on terrestrial Friday. Which way will Muslims face to pray? Will Muslims and Jews fast from first light to last night, as they do on Earth, even thought the day is slightly different in length? When will Ramadan begin on Mars; one can't start it when one sights the crescent moon in the west! How will the Christian liturgical calendar be adapted to Mars? When will Easter be celebrated? To keep the Martian and Christian liturgical calendars in synch, one will need to have a Martian liturgical calendar of 355 sols per year, because there are 355 martian days in a terrestrial year. Which saints feasts will one drop and reschedule? In my novel, I drop all 31st days of the month, which means All Souls' Day/Halloween is gone.

If an entirely new Martian calendar of 668 sols per year is developed, it would have to have various religious expressions as well. Should there be an Easter and a Ramadan once per Martian year?

There are a few theological issues to consider, too. The evangelical Christian belief that when Jesus returns, he will be seen by everyone: does that mean Jesus will physically return to Mars as well as to Earth? Evangelicals will have to consider that one.

Then there are practices related to religion, such as burial and creation. Should the bodies of the dead be buried outside on Mars, where they will be preserved intact for a million years? They would certainly be in good shape for bodily resurrection, wouldn't they! How would one cremate a body on Mars? Baha'is believe in natural decay of the body after burial; should there be cemetaries inside domes where the bodies would decay, or can they be buried outside?

Gee, I see a paper for a future Mars Society conference in this topic. . .

I think the most important thing, as mentioned by others, is to have strict separation of church and state on Mars.

These days there are so many countries and governments being influenced by special interest religious groups it blows my mind.

In Mexico they call it 'Agua'.  In Germany it's 'Wasser' and in the U.S. we know it as 'Water'.  The names are different but it's still the same thing.

Sometimes I reckon Bush is a joke of a leader, the mess of Iraq, the massive debts and then the Katrina fiasco

However when you see the radicals on the other side like Iran, Bush don't look so bad
Islamic cartoon Jihad now intensifies,
These islamic nutbags are really pushing it this time, the crazy protestors are giving their peaceful-religion a worse image than the cartoon did. so this time do we allow Taliban thugs to ban all Rap and Rock music all African-American dance because Muslims find it offensive, should we censor the Mona Lisa, Salvador Dalí pics, African art, Playboy magazine - do we burn Mark Twain books, Arthur C Clark novels, burn Margaret Mitchell's books because some Afghan radical doesn't like its content. Holding signs that read “behead those who insult Islam”?  There is also the Islamic ban on any pictorial representation, and Orthodox Muslim ban on paintings of creatures/animals/landscapes - the destruction of frescoes and the monumental statues of the Buddha at Bamiyan by the radical Muslim sects and nationalist group, the Taliban. Extremists in the Palestinian refugee camp called Ein-el-Hilwih tell crowd to kill Norwegians and Danish citizens. However the United States and GW backed Muslims against European newspapers that printed caricatures of the Prophet in a move that could help

The nutbag British Muslims vented their anger, with some shouting: 'UK you must pray, 7/7 is on its way.' Other slogans included 'massacre those who insult Islam' and 'Europe, your 9/11 will come'.  Two New Zealand newspapers have reprinted cartoons depicting caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad which have angered Muslims across the world, saying the decision was based on press freedom. The cartoons, first published by a Danish newspaper in September, appeared in the Dominion Post and the The Press based in Christchurch, both owned by Australia's Fairfax group. "It's important for our readers to see what the fuss is about and to make up their own minds. Ours is a secular society based on western ideals of tolerance and open debate, even if that may occasionally offend," said Tim Pankhurst, Dominion Post's editor. Re: Should God be Exported to Mars?

This cartoon thing is crazy. Getting insulted is part of life. I've always felt that Americans don't do very well with it, because too many will make a big deal over a single comment or even sue over this kind of thing. But that's nothing compared to burning an embassy and threatening genocide. Sure the cartoon was insulting and in very poor taste, but it didn't actually hurt anyone. These people also really need to realize that the actions of an independent Danish newspaper can not be blamed on the Danish government or people or on the European Union.

A governing should never endorse any belief system ever.

To do so is to abdicate some of its power.

The separation of Church and State is vital to any form of government that wishes not to arbitarilary alienate some of its citizens or its allies.

British Bishop: 'Russia is the Last Obstacle to the One World Government'
https://rairfoundation.com/british-bish … ent-video/

Williamson believes that “the next tricks of the criminals who rule the world will be artificially created famine” and urges Europeans to stock up on food while it can still be bought.

wiki entry

Richard Nelson Williamson is an English Traditionalist bishop formerly in communion with the Catholic Church who opposes the changes in the church brought about by the Second Vatican Council. He was originally a member of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX). He was subsequently excommunicated; this was lifted in 2009. Williamson was convicted in German courts of denying the Holocaust and incitement related to those views. He incurred a latae sententiae excommunication in 2015 for consecrating a bishop without the pope's approval. Due to other actions, Williamson was expelled from the SSPX in 2012.

In 1988, Williamson was one of four SSPX priests who were ordained as bishops by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, for which Pope John Paul II claimed they incurred ipso facto automatic excommunication. https://web.archive.org/web/20150129194 … ei_en.html The validity of the excommunication has always been denied by the SSPX, who, citing canon law, argue that the consecrations were permissible due to a crisis in the Catholic Church. The excommunications, including that of Williamson, were lifted on 21 January 2009, but the suspension of the bishops from the exercise of ministry within the Catholic Church remained in force, except for certain exceptions. The exceptions were granted by Popes Benedict XVI and Francis as a way to foster dialogue and goodwill, and allow the priests limited ministry despite their canonically irregular situation.

Immediately afterward, Swedish television broadcast an interview recorded earlier at the SSPX's seminary in Zaitzkofen, Bavaria. During the interview, Williamson expressed his belief that Nazi Germany did not use gas chambers during the Holocaust and that no more than 200,000 to 300,000 Jews were killed by them during the war.[clarification needed] Based upon these statements, Williamson was immediately charged with and convicted of Holocaust denial by a German court. The Holy See declared that Pope Benedict had been unaware of Williamson's views when he lifted the excommunication of the four bishops. He said that Williamson would remain suspended from his episcopal functions until he unequivocally and publicly distanced himself from that stated position on the Holocaust. In 2010, Williamson was convicted of incitement in a German court in relation to those views; the conviction was later vacated on appeal. He was convicted again of this charge in a retrial in early 2013. Williamson appealed again, but his appeal was rejected.
After a number of incidents, including calling for the resignation of Bernard Fellay as the Superior General of the Society of St. Pius X, refusal to stop publishing his weekly email and an unauthorised visitation to Brazil, Williamson was expelled from the Society in 2012. After leaving the Society, Williamson consecrated Jean-Michel Faure, Tomás de Aquino Ferreira da Costa, and Gerardo Zendejas [pl] as bishops in 2015, 2016, and 2017.
Because of these consecrations, he was excommunicated latae sententiae from the Catholic Church again in 2015

Re: Should God be Exported to Mars?

It occurs to me that "god" / "gods" is a human brain construct.  If you import humans to Mars, then their brains go with them.  Since you can't separate humans from their brains and still have functional humans, this argument is "moo point".  Much like the opinion of a cow, it just doesn't matter.  You can't stop ideas you disagree with and it's foolish to try.  Even people threatened with death under communist regimes still practiced their religions.  The Soviet Union eventually collapsed.  Christianity endured.  There's an object lesson in there somewhere, although I'm sure it's totally lost on our communists.  Let people believe whatever they want to believe, because any other approach is a monumental waste of time and energy that's much better spent solving all the critical problems associated with merely surviving on Mars.  People who are too freaked out by the mere idea that not everyone shares their exact beliefs should probably "just stay at home", making life more tolerable for everyone who does go.

That means all the major religions will be represented.  You'll have people that worship Jesus / Yahweh / Allah / Buddha / money / government / themselves / flying spaghetti monsters.  Personally, I'm partial to the flying spaghetti monsters and think my sky wizard is better than all other sky wizards. tongue  If you can't see the humor in that statement, then you probably shouldn't go.

Unification Church says Abe shooter's mother is follower

https://japantoday.com/category/crime/u … s-follower

Tomihiro Tanaka, president of the Japan branch of Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, known as the Unification Church, told reporters at a briefing in Tokyo that Yamagami's mother was a member of the church. He did not give her name.

Tanaka declined to comment on her donations, citing the ongoing police investigation.

Neither Abe nor the man arrested for his shooting were members of the church, Tanaka said. Abe was also not an adviser to the church, Tanaka said, adding the church would cooperate with police on the investigation if asked to do so.

Abe appeared at an event hosted by an organization affiliated with the church last September where he delivered a speech praising the affiliate's work towards peace on the Korean peninsula, according to the church's website.

Reuters was not immediately able to contact Yamagami's mother and could not determine whether she belonged to any other religious organizations.

Police have confirmed that the suspect said he held a grudge against a specific organization, but have not named it.

Yamagami's mother first joined the church around 1998 but stopped attending in a period between 2009 and 2017, Tanaka said. About two to three years ago she re-established communication with church members and in the last half year or so has been attending church events at a frequency of about once a month, he said.

The Unification Church was founded in South Korea in 1954 by Sun Myung Moon, a self-declared messiah and strident anti-communist. It has gained global media attention for its mass weddings where it marries thousands of couples at a time.

Moon, who spoke fluent Japanese, launched an anti-communist political campaign in Japan from the late 1960s and built relations with Japanese politicians, according to the church's publications.

Moon died in 2012. The church has about 600,000 members in Japan, out of 10 million globally, Tanaka said.

Re: Should God be Exported to Mars?

For Mars_B4_Moon ....

This post is about the topic as a whole .... I was inspired by your post to take the time to go back to the opening by Scott G. Beach (one of three incarnatations).

I read for several pages, and generally found the conversation interesting, with the usual NewMars wild card thrown in occasionally.

Even Clark was on good behavior at that time.

As a side note ... I noticed that one of Clark's posts contained question marks where apostrophe used to be.  That means the post was processed by an early version of the Post Repair utility program.  My long term plan is to go back over those early posts and restore the Extended ASCII.  However, the post reads fairly well as it is, so in general terms, the Post Repair process seems to have been worth undertaking.

Ex-wife slams ‘devil’ Texas father Yaser Said over ‘honor killings’ of daughters for dating American boys
https://nypost.com/2022/08/05/yaser-sai … daughters/
A Texas man on trial for murdering his two daughters in “honor killings” because they were dating American boys was called the “devil” in court Thursday by the girls’ mother, who detailed 15 years of abuse during their marriage.
Patricia Owens, Yaser Said’s former wife, had not seen him since New Year’s Day of 2008 — when he took their daughters Amina, 18, and Sarah, 17, to dinner and insisted on going alone so they could talk.
Instead, prosecutors say, Said shot the girls multiple times in the cab he drove and left them for dead outside a hotel in suburban Irving.
Owens testified that she and the girls had just returned to their home in Lewisville, Texas, from Oklahoma, where they had gone to get away from Said. She testified she knew the girls were dating — and that Said would have become enraged if he knew about it.
“I just thought he would, like, punish them, like take their phone away and stuff like that,” she said.
But long before 2008, Owens testified, she and her daughters were abused by Said. She told the jury how she married Said in 1987, when she was just 15 and he was 29. She gave birth to Amina, Sarah, and their brother Islam in the first three years of their marriage.

Re: Should God be Exported to Mars?

Why Richard Dawkins doesn’t fear the ‘great nothing’ that awaits at the end
https://www.smh.com.au/culture/art-and- … 5b587.html

I knew of the whole Religion-type vs Atheist type debates for many years.

However the first time I came across the heated online religion debate in social media was maybe 2008 somewhere between theBush jnr Presidency and the Obama era. New breeds of adult and young teen kids involved in the debate across a world wide interweb, a guy called Bunker posted a video to YouTube critical of the Internet-based hacker 4chan style group "Anonymous" and asked them to tone down their campaign against the Church of Scientology; a movement called "Project Chanology". In Bunker's video "Message to Anonymous", Bunker urged the group to maybe to less hacking and sabotage anarchy stuff and do more work legally and pursue peaceful ways to protest Scientology. I later came across his vids again called 'Xenu Tv' where Scientologist I don't know how to describe them but maybe gangs or advocates or scientology 'fans' would stalk him get in his face and roar 'What are your crimes'!? Their scientology passion was strange, in unison like people repeating words of a cult religion and as if trying to mentally break him down for daring to make video with his camera, the films were shot from Bunker's perspective, sometimes local Police had more sympathy for the Scientologist type, I believe the videos are still online so you can judge for yourself what the whole thing as about.

The group mind think is sometimes it all a controlled show and front, the religion and cult maybe even enters sports and politics, maybe it is everywhere, it is why people fill Soccer stadiums to be part of a group or maybe why they went to Jonestown because something was missing in their life, maybe right now by participation in media we ourselves don't know we might sometimes go through rituals, you are expect to watch sport, for example ignore a corruption, maybe tennis might have had an under cover doping steroid problem old guys like Federer and Nadal playing and winning into their 40s but as they finally retire just remember Serena Williams' her Hollwyood buddies and the greats of a Jehovah's Witnesses religion, follow the adverts and glam and forget the controversies and Celebrity Scientology Scandals? Get out and protest about the latest thing Facebook or Hollywood tells you to feel. Look across the world and see how the people of politics mix their political slogans with Religion Phrases to manipulate, however is Atheist the way when so many people of Communist Atheist values also have been responsible for killings and crime.

In Bangladesh Air Force a media channel and they sometimes go Sharia Law and Burqa, posting islamic khutba on their official YouTube channel, khutbah originates from the practice of the islamist pedophile terrorist from 1400 years ago, a man muslims believe a prophet, this Muhammad, who used to deliver words of exhortation, instruction, or command at gatherings. For the stronger military powers on Earth perhpas the Ariforce would not be much of a challenge as most of their helicopters, radar, ordnance and aircraft belong in a Museum

In other times in news and social media
Sometimes you have a sensation news rumor reported and a crime of religion zealots is not a crime

A youtube vegan shooter once had been identified as Ms. Nasim Aghdam, a registered Baha’i but maybe it was less religion and more just crazy and violent?

Before the Trump and Obama years people say there was a classic u tube era where a loud passionate spirited open debate between Atheist-person and Religion-person was openly allowed.

The gamer generation seen many accounts purged for offense speech, Joe Rogan types were out there they could often reference drink and drug culture and many of these types have been banned, then came the censorship of Trump and Donald Trump followers from big tech.

However let's look back on some social media accounts that survived the purges

Re: Should God be Exported to Mars?

For Mars_B4_Moon ....

I'm working in this post, from the observation that you seem (to me at least) to have a lot of energy available when the subject is religion.

I'm coming around to the view that religion is a kind  of "operating system" for neural networks.

it seems to me that humans try to make sense of the Universe they observe, and over eons they've come up with a wide variety of systems of thought for how the Universe works, and how humans might most successfully interact with it.

Like the "operating systems" for modern computers, it seems to me that some religions have evolved, while some have shown remarkable staying power.

This topic only has 120 posts, so it might be possible to read it from the top, but religion is not a primary interest.  Your (apparent) fascination with this subject caught my attention, so I decided to see if this way of thinking about the subject might inspire your writing.

Re: Should God be Exported to Mars?

If Mars is colonised, many of the colonists will bring their religion with them.  So the question isn't whether god will be exported, but whether religion, or some religions, should be deliberately excluded.  I am in favour of Islam being banned from Mars, as it brings death and violence wherever it goes.  It simply has nothing constructive to offer.  But I don't believe there is much case to make banning Buddism, or Hinduism, or Sikhism or Christianity.  Even the most zealous of Christians has come a long way since the Spannish Inquisition.  Buddists are inherently peaceful.  And no Hindu ever tried to bomb London underground or hijack planes and fly them into buildings.  So I would have to ask why one would attempt to ban a faith that is peaceful.
