Titles system

People might be wondering what these funky stars are that have appeared next to their names in posts. They're simply a way of showing how many posts you've made and will be a good way of identifying new users who might be unfamiliar with these forums. The system goes:

0 posts - no stars - no title
1-49 posts - 1 star - 'Junior Member'
50-99 posts - 2 stars - 'Member'
100+ posts - 3 stars - 'Senior Member'

When people start hitting over 200 posts, I'll probably make up some kind of new title.

I tried to implement this system a while back but it didn't work too well and I couldn't figure out how to make it work. In fact, it doesn't work that well right now either since in order for your stars and title to appear by your name in current posts, you have to make an additional posts (probably in order to update the database). But that's only a minor problem.

Adrian, your system is working well!
Four stars and a "Veteran" title .... so that's what 200 posts get you!!
Next step: Five stars and a "Senile" title!!

But seriously, I had envisaged trading in your 3 stars for one diamond at 200 posts. Then maybe 2 diamonds at 500 posts ... Something like that.

Thanks It's the least I can do, anyway. About the stars - I could do some kind of nifty thing where you get different symbols, but we'll have to see whether it actually is possible (which I think it is). I'll check up on it after I get back from a brief weekend away.

Although it won't be an issue for a while, I am wondering what kind of title I should do for people with 500 posts...

I wouldn't mind "Queen of the Lizard People".

Or barring that, how about "Mr.Know-it-all-and-has-to-prove-it" for me and anyone else who posts more than 500.

Hah, that last suggestion sounds strangely attractive, but I think something like 'Elite member' or a variation on that would do well for 500 posts. As for 1000 posts (I estimate that some people will reach that point in a mere few months, at their current rate) I honestly don't have a clue and I actually like the idea of letting such people choose their own titles (within reason, of course).

*Phobos is due to hit the big "1000" for posts pretty soon, and I'm right behind him.

How about a special title for that 1000-mark, Adrian?

I've thought about this on and off for the last few weeks. The only good idea for a standard title has been 'Founding Member', more in the metaphorical rather than temporal sense of course. Beyond that, I'm still happy for 1000+ posters to have their own titles, within reason.

I'll probably go and make some new kind of graphic for 1000+ posters (i.e. not just six stars) - maybe a silver bar or a little Mars. I don't know... any suggestions?

That is a relief: I thought they meant how much money they had donated!

I think the main reason I'm not a member is because I'd be so longing to get involved. I'd be pressing for all sorts of stuff, if not investing my own money in it. I know that's not a bad thing, for Mars exploration and all, but for me that would be disastrous!

I'm working on things behind the scenes, though. But nothing full time, or anything.

The 'star system' is not, of itself, important.

What is important is the quality of the posts and whether they further people's appreciation of the many facets of planetary exploration, especially Martian exploration. In addition, posts in the appropriate places are worthwhile if they serve to forge cyber-friendships between people with similar interests.

A long series of pointless 3-word posts, made for the sole purpose of increasing the number of little gold stars next to your name, is not what the system was designed for.
Such behaviour could be misconstrued as infantile, as could a well-thought-out argument like: "Just shut up, dumbass."
