The Logistics Double Module is roomier than a LEM and provided with a Lunar Orbit Boost Stage and unmanned Lander system could function as a reuseable toolshed, Materials refining facility. All you need to relocate it is an Automated carry-all. That way the Manned Moon mission consists of a reuseable transport between the ISS and the Moon.

It could be launched from the Shuttle Cargo Bay which means not only could a lunar mission be crew to the ISS for Transfer to the Moon, but their own LDM in the Same Launch. Thus all we need is a Lunar taxi service and the Private sector could pay for and profit from 'Tax free' mining on the Moon.

srmeaney: nice picture but you should post the summary page for the module instead.
So a meaningful discusion could follow.

It would be about 25,000-30,000 lb with Lunar booster and lander components. On the Moon, you would be dealing with long term use. certainly no 12 hour LEM missions. We would be talking a year at a site before the Workshed is relocated to a New Site. The Modification is minimal. In the World of Mineral Exploitation it would be used as a Parts and tool shed for large automated mining equipment with an occasional visit by Mission Specialists.
3KW solar array would be substantial roof coverage though.

Since we are talking about what Spacehab can provide, lets start with what they say they are doing for the exploration vision. Destination next; SpaceHab is "Go" for exploration document page. This gives us testimony as well on there efforts to congress.

Can you detail all the specific weights for your 25,000-35,000 weight estimate? Does that include fuel for landing? Food? Oxygen supply and CO2 removal system?
Also how does the crew get off the moon?
Do you really think this is better than using Mars Direct hardware for a manned mission to the moon?

*Dammit.
I still prefer the old-fashioned, sleek bullet-shaped rockets with the fancy-shmancy tailfins.

Now only trying to give Mr. srmeaney plenty of real details on his concept to use the Logistics Double Modules that SpaceHab provides the Nasa for Shuttle use.
They are insuficiently micrometeor shielded, No real power source and the list goes on....

If landed horizontally and was quickly covered with regolith, they could work as a workshop.
But there are better ways to do it.

Ok maybe the thought was that not much was wrong with these modules. Maybe others that are designed to fit in the cargo bay would be better to base a module construction of a base on the moon. In fact some module designs could be made from the ISS building blocks.
In either case landing the modules and then placing them into position for use are the real logistics problems of the future of anything larger than a lander for a base.
