I found the following article on the technological requirements for a manned Mars mission in the Electronic Engineering Times:
http://www.eetimes.com/news/latest/show … ...9906000 (Failure is not an option, but plan for it anyway)
http://www.eetimes.com/news/latest/show … ...9906191 (Road to Mars )
http://www.eetimes.com/news/latest/show … ...9906178 (On Mars, 'modularity' has multiple meanings)
I encourge everyone to read these and comment on them!

Great stuff, and coming from the electronics side of the technology coin (too cute?) I concur entirely. But that's a lot of "modularity" for Mars Society buffs to digest. Could you please generalize, out of all that jargon, what we should do that we aren't already?

Certainly the problems with modularity are going to be 'the thing' that holds back a space oriented civilization. Even memory storage which may be required by Martians as a single common server point for Storage and Transmission of data (it will probably need to be a lot like the 2001 scene of HAL's Memory bank, with nothing but a room full of USB Memory sticks with Data capacity expandable serialy) just to handle bulk interaction with all parties. That way, storage capacity can be continually upgraded but when the room speed needs upgrading, you send a new room with faster earth-mars tx/rx rate, and transfer the memorysticks over.
The problem will be when we tell you that you cant have the laptop because the computer that sits on the table in front of you uses the standard we have chosen for memory transfer for the next hundred years and the laptop is architecture incompatable.

More than a five-year plan--much less a hundred-year plan-- wouldn't happen here, now, and it wouldn't happen there, then. In a hundred years, such technology will be unrecognizable, you just wait and see!

In other words your talking about the alternate.
2828 AD -Microsoft AI probe ship encounters hostile alien probeship with incomrehensible language. War is a certainty, until you realize that the one it encountered was the Macintosh AI probeship launced two years later.
