John Deere, huh? "Nothing runs like a Deere."
Last I knew, John Deere was basically building farm equipment -- tractors and combines, etc. But I haven't done any research on the company; just going on what familiarity I've had with it growing up in the rural/agricultural Midwest.

What a revelation! The article refers to it as a "monstrosity," but having witnessed what the current--wheeled--certifiably monsterous tree harvesters are doing to the floors of our forests, I sould have referred to it as a beautiful machine.

It's WHEELS vs. FEET that's the difference, as far as damage to the forest floor is concerned. Constant-speed diesel powered hydraulics should be the same for both technologies, fuelwise.
