Re: Marsian Status Symbols?

Somewhat off topic I guess, but I've been nailing golf balls outside of my house recently, they don't go far due to a wall, but I just know I'm going to loft it over it one day and hit a car driving down the street... heh... I really need to stop doing that.

Because the wind conditions on Mars would be excellent, golfing would be a lot easier, so I think it would be more of a past time for everyone than a status symbol. I mean, who needs fairways, you just need a "green," with a hole on it. Golf rules allow you to move (non-permanent) obstacles; where ever your ball lands, if you can't hit it due to rocks, you just clean a patch out around it. So basically, I don't see golf resorts really happening on Mars... at least not initially when there's so much place to roam.

Perhaps over time those golf courses which have been allowed to form due to other golfers clearing paths would be the private ones, or at least, the most popular/endearing. "Look honey! It took three thousand games for the first hole to look like that! These day's its tradition to design courses by first playing through the area where the course is to be laid out, but they use machines to clear the courses on the new ones."

Ahh, Mars golf. Nothing like hitting a tiny ball hundreds of feet to get your blood rushing, I can only imagine the rush of hitting one thousands of feet; so hard one will loft themselves off the ground (ie, Apollo, only not so severe).

Re: Marsian Status Symbols?

How about an origional copy of War of the Worlds?

I have a 1930's copy, and a leatherbound copy.

Still a great read.

I agree REB, good book.  big_smile

How about antique sextons and other navigational aids? Perhaps old hand drawn maps of Earth or even Mars?

Re: Marsian Status Symbols?

Clark, I liked on one of the Star Treks where they had an old sailing ship wheel.

To think of what a Martian would is difficult. I try to put myself in their shoes. The first settlers will find stuff from Earth valuable, but the natives, especially generations down may feel differently. Some will see artifacts from the Old World as valuable or interesting, but I imagine others will have more respect of Mars items.

Perhaps, us Americans anyway, can lean towards how we feel about items from Europe.

I bet the movie Dune will be a big hit on Mars. I also predict Hawaiian shirts being in style.

Your own private tree garden dome out behind your home. It shows you have money to burn and looks exotic (on Mars). The really rich or snobby people can compete for bigger/more different trees.

Re: Marsian Status Symbols?

Anything that can't be made or is difficult to make would become valuable on Mars. Ideas:

-non-genetically modified plants/animals, particularly aquariums and the most mundane types of houseplants.
-Real, as in non-synthetic, jewlery
-Real stuff in general, cooking with natural flavorings/spices, books made of non-recycled paper, etc.
-Your luxury dune buggy.

Almost everything in the colony will be bland, artificial, recycled, and utilitarian. Anything that breaks this trend will be very highly valued, IMHO.

Re: Marsian Status Symbols?

multicolored scarab-beetle pets in a self-sustaining enviorment.

That and letting antarctic beetles roam around the surface of mars eating bits of lichen and moss.

Might need a warm-oxygen hose over them.

(These creatures make anti-freeze to stop themselves freezing solid, but there is room for Genetic Modification to make them more Mars compatable)
