About 50 minutes left until the 'official' launch of First Words. I've enabled everything on the website so if you guys would like to test out the website and make a few entries, that'd be great!

Great site! I loved the variety of responses in the "first words" section. That part about making the Moon into cpus so we can think more thoughts wasn't exactly something I was expecting to read.

Man, I have no idea what to put as an entry.

I just had an interview with a guy from the Discovery Channel, who's writing up a short article for their website. It seems like interest is really building in the competition so I've decided to extend it for two more days until October 12th - it would be a shame to end it prematurely.

There is an article at Space.com regarding First Words- there is even a quote from Adrian.

Yep, I just saw that article after I got off the phone to the Discovery Channel guy. The quote is from a press release that I whipped up last week and posted on Usenet - it seems to have gradually migrated from there to NASA and destinations unknown...
So far we have 236 entries, most of which were made in the last few hours. Not too shabby!

I hope your planning to leave the site up indefinately and keep adding new additions to it even after the competition is over. It was a brilliant idea that seems to be taking off.

Actually I think some other news outlets mentioned Adrian also when he made that animation of Mars. At least I think that's the same Adrian that tends to this board.

I hope it's a woman who says 1st words on Mars. The 1st person to STEP FOOT on Mars should be a woman, since men have always been 1st to land here or there, on the Moon or American shores or where ever else.

*Welcome aboard, Nida. I agree; it would be a nice [and long overdue] change of pace to have a woman be the first person to put footprints on new soil; in this case, Mars.

So one woman stepping on a distant planet would go a long way towards evening the score? I wonder if those who feel such sentiments think that a woman should be the first, even if she is a bit less qualified. For the sake of this thread, please don't answer here.
I guess I think that gender is really irrelvant regarding the whole issue since any person on Mars is a representation of all of us- of course we can choose to filter the event and say that color, creed, or gender define the moment, but I guess I choose to be more inclusive. A man landing on Mars is not another example of the exclusion and oppression of women, just as a woman landing on Mars is not an exclusion or oppresion of men.
Maybe a compromise can be reached- a hermfradite albino- both sexs, no color... BEHOLD, UTOPIA!

Why shouldn't a woman be 1st this time?

We could have the first person step on mars in drag. that might make things a little more balanced.

I think they should just draw sticks. Or better yet, they should just all jump out at the same time.

Hey, if people are going to argue about which gender the first person on Mars should be, leave it out of this forum - personally, I couldn't give a damn as long as they get the job done right.
Anyway. I was just interviewed by a reporter from the Sunday Herald Sun in Australia, a broadsheet newspaper that goes out to 1.8 million people; they'll be publishing a section lead story about First Words - quite cool, if you ask me.

Why shouldn't a woman be 1st this time?
There is no reason why a woman shouldn't be 1st. There also is no legitimate reason (in my opinion) why a woman should be first either.
Making it a woman becuase there is this feeling of exclusion is silly. You see what you want to see. Case in point:
Fine, lets agree that a woman should be first.
Which woman? What color? How old? What should she look like? What language should she speak? What color hair should she have? What color eyes should she have? How tall should she be? How much should she weigh? What should be her disposition? Which hand should she write with? Should she be heterosexual or otherwise?
You may say that all of these other conditions are unnecceszsary- maybe even call them arbitrary. Yet that is what you doing with gender. So, if we insist that the first PERSON on mars should be of a certain gender, why can't we also say that they have to be gay, left handed, with red hair, green eyes, eskimo, at 5 and 3 quarters tall, weighing 130lbs, speaking german?
Left handed people are excluded. Gay people are excluded- why aren't you clamoring for them?
Do you see?

Sorry Adrian, I think we posted at the same time- didn't see your request until after I submitted it, would you be kind enough to designate a home for my offending post without deleting it?
Congrats on all the success. Did you think it would go better or worse than it has?
