Re: NASA Technology Request BAA - A step in the right direction (finally)?

http://www.space.com/news/moon_mars_040729.html]NASA Issues Call For Moon, Mars And Beyond Technologies. Looks like NASA is starting to think reallisticly again, prompted by the budget cuts, no doubt. Sounds like they're calling for Mars Direct, except with an inflatable hab and stuffed in an Atlas (where will the astronauts fit? tongue ) Can't find much more info on the NASA link. Please discuss.

Well it has been a while since the last RFI but here is the next stage in critical road map issues.

NASA Advanced Planning and Integration Office (APIO) Request for Information (RFI)

NASA is currently preparing a set of high-level national roadmaps that will form the foundation of the Agency's strategic plan.

"Strategic Roadmaps" will explore options and establish pathways for achievement of NASA's strategic objectives.

"Capability Roadmaps" will recommend approaches for providing certain technical capabilities judged to be critical to NASA's future programs.

Technologies of interest include those for the production of structural components using either "imported" feedstock or available lunar and/or Martian resources; autonomous or tele-operated robotic technologies for surface facility assembly and maintenance; and, technologies for off-Earth creation of solar photovoltaic systems or other energy systems.

Well NASA seems willing to explore the possibility of telleoperated construction and maintenance.

Re: NASA Technology Request BAA - A step in the right direction (finally)?

The hard pill to swallow out of the RFI is contained in the summary for what they are looking for but what they will do with it. So why bother if they are doing nothing with it?

NASA is seeking information regarding strategies, mission concepts, investigations, capabilities, and technologies that may enable or enhance NASA's ability to carry out its mission for the nation. No procurement is planned as a result of this RFI, although responses may be considered in formulating NASA's future strategic investments and other decisions.NO AWARDS WILL BE GRANTED AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THIS RFI.

Capabilities Focus Areas should relate to one or more of the 15 key capability focus areas shown below:

High-Energy Power and Propulsion
In-Space Transportation
Advanced Telescopes and Observatories
Communication and Navigation
Robotic Access to Planetary Surfaces
Human Planetary Landing Systems
Human Health and Support Systems
Human Exploration Systems and Mobility
Autonomous Systems and Robotics
Transformational Spaceport/Range
Scientific Instruments/Sensors
In Situ Resource Utilization
Advanced Modeling, Simulation, Analysis
Systems Engineering Cost/Risk Analysis
Nanotechnology

Strategic white papers should relate to one or more of the 12 key strategic focus areas shown below:

Robotic and human lunar expeditions.
Sustained, long-term robotic and human exploration of Mars.
Robotic exploration across the solar system.
Advanced telescope searches for Earth-like planets and habitable environments.
Development of an exploration transportation system.
Completion of the International Space Station and focusing its use on supporting space exploration goals.
Exploration of the Universe.
Exploration of the dynamic Earth system.
Exploration of the Sun-Earth system.
Advanced aeronautical technologies for next-generation aviation systems.
Using NASA missions inspire, motivate, and educate.
Utilization of nuclear systems for the advancement of space science and exploration.

Seems to me that they have asked for an awful lot of paper from those that can and will do submit something to contribute to the SEV.
Has Nasa forgot to think for themself? Or are they just looking for fresh ideas?

NASA should try to use whatever resources it has available be they from within, universities or private companies. They should not be criticized for seeking outside input. They should be congratulated.

Re: NASA Technology Request BAA - A step in the right direction (finally)?

News release Nasa Space agency invited public participation into NASA's Capability Roadmap Public Workshop in Washington November 30.

This RFI solicits information only, in two categories:
· Capabilities Focus Areas
· Strategic Objectives Focus Areas.

Capabilities Focus Areas: Groups or individuals interested in describing existing or proposed capabilities or technologies to NASA are encouraged to provide rationale and technical details in a white paper format (no longer than two pages).

Capabilities should relate to one or more of the 15 key capability focus areas shown below:
1.High-Energy Power and Propulsion
2. In-Space Transportation
3. Advanced Telescopes and Observatories
4. Communication and Navigation
5. Robotic Access to Planetary Surfaces
6. Human Planetary Landing Systems
7. Human Health and Support Systems
8. Human Exploration Systems and Mobility
9. Autonomous Systems and Robotics
10. Transformational Spaceport/Range
11. Scientific Instruments/Sensors
12. In Situ Resource Utilization
13. Advanced Modeling, Simulation, Analysis
14. Systems Engineering Cost/Risk Analysis
15. Nanotechnology

Strategic Focus Areas: Groups or individuals interested in providing input to the Strategic Roadmap teams are encouraged to describe their ideas in a white paper format (no longer than two pages) by December 10, 2004. See below for instructions on white paper submission. Strategic white papers should relate to one or more of the 12 key strategic focus areas shown below (maximum of two focus areas per paper):
1.Robotic and human lunar expeditions.
2. Sustained, long-term robotic and human exploration of Mars.
3. Robotic exploration across the solar system.
4. Advanced telescope searches for Earth-like planets and habitable environments.
5. Development of an exploration transportation system.

Re: NASA Technology Request BAA - A step in the right direction (finally)?

NASA Selects Exploration Systems Proposals

More than 3700 Notices of Intent were submitted to NASA, evaluated, and subjected to an integrated review across project areas. Submissions to the announcement follow a rigorous process to ensure timely and objective evaluation of their relevance, technical quality, cost, resources, planning, and socioeconomic merits. The field was narrowed from 485 full proposal submissions.

NASA's Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) selected 70 proposals to support the research and technology goals and objectives of the Vision for Space Exploration. The total value of the work is more than $1 billion through fiscal year 2009.

The hidden china effect on the vision and on Nasa. Does this make a difference. IMO it means that a world effort is under foot when it comes to the goals of the space exploration vision.
