Re: Mars Drill Will Seek Knowledge And Resources - Developed by JSC, now being tested

"George believes the concept shows considerable promise. "It is a unique technology," he said."

You'll have to read the article to find out who George is, heehee!

I thought I read how deep it can drill but now I can't find it. I wonder if the pipe will extend like a tellescope.

Here is the news release by Nasa:

Mars-Arctic Drill Test Run Images

Mars Drill to Seek Knowledge, Resources

None of the resources seem to answer the depth question but the photos would indicate some means based on the pole or drill images.

Wouldn't it be funny if they found oil. Houston we have something black bubbling up. Of course I don’t think it would be useful to earth even with two space elevators and A nuclear powered ion freighter that used a cheaper fuel then xenon. I would still be funny though.

From all the photos it appears that the unit is still man controlled and operated as well as moved. Not really all that much like a rover or moveable unit for exploration. Even playing with the unit should be done while in at least a space suit if it were intended to be used that way. If nothing else but to practice.
