ok - any terraformers landing on Mars would ALL need to be highly proficient in first aid - ARE YOU?
let's see what kind of first aider you are!!
QUIZ 1
========================
You are out and about shopping on your own, for your latest edition of "Mars R US weekly," when suddenly you come upon a disorientated male who has collapsed - a few other people have stopped, but don't appear to know what to do
The man is breathing and has a pulse, but just seems to have fainted. There are no visible injuries either. You decide to SEARCH the person, to see if you can find any medical cards or identity clues
a) no, I would not search the man, I have no right to do so
b) yes I would search him but first I would ask a member of the public to be my witness
c) I do have a right to search but a search would not be necessary in this case
d) I would search him but there is no need for any "witness"
QUIZ 2
======================
Further down the road there has been quite a bad crash
A motorcyclist has been hit and come off his motorbike
You notice that he is laying on the road wearing a full face helmet
a) I would not remove the crash helmet in any circumstances, Doctors or Paramedics only
b) yes, as it is a FULL FACE crash helmet the helmet would have to be removed pretty fast to gain access for checking of possible head injuries
c) I would assess the motorcyclist's injuries first. If an open airway cannot be maintained for example - I would then remove the helmet
QUIZ 3

hey can YOU do QUIZ 3 ? ?? or ... can you give answers to Quiz 1 or 2??

Let's see what I remember from lifeguard training...
Quiz one is the tougher one, IMHO, I've always been better at remmebering how to do things that which things are legal or not. Doing things is easy, there are rules set in stone you follow, while legalities are entirely up for grabs, who knows when a lawyer could jump out of a bush at you? But I digress, the answer is (d) as far as I know. I was mostly trained how to pass the buck to my manager if someone passed out with good vitals at the pool, so none of the answers would surprise me.
Quiz two depends on which planet you're on. On Mars it would be (a), since without a helmit how are you going to breathe? One Earth it would probably be ©, as I would really, really not want to remove the helmit in case there were a spinal injury, but if they can't breathe, hey, it's life over limb. After someone gets a spinal injury you can move the head once and it will probably be okay. Move it twice and the victim has a big chance of being paralyized in at least one limb and after a third time they could end up like Christopher Reeve. Moving the head in a possible spinal scinerio is a last resort.
As far as Quiz 3, here goes:
QUIZ 3
==============================================
When you are out on an EVA, one of the O-rings in your buddy's helmit cracks due to the cold temperatures (It was never designed to be used bellow 23 degrees F but NASA didn't care ). By the time you make it back to the airlock, her suit has completely lost all pressure. Just as the airlock starts to pressurize, she hacks up some bloody mucus and goes unconcious. After removing her helmit you find that she has no pulse and is not breathing, and her pupils are dilated severely. There is an Automated Emergency Defibrilator (AED) on the wall. What do you do?
a) Start CPR at a ratio of 5 compressions to two breaths.
b) Start CPR at a ratio of 15 compressions to two breaths.
c) Power up the AED and try to use it immediately.
d) Nothing. She's already dead.
Good luck. And please don't kill your fellow Martians.

hi Mad Grad - thanks for looking at my 2 quizzes - so I will now look at yours
I say answer B because I have never had training in any 'Automated Emergency Defibrilator,' althought it sounds mighty tempting for sure
D is the worst answer for sure, no way - remember THIS is your secret sweet heart we're talking about here and only after 1 hour of continuous CPR do we then admit to the slight possibility of failure

This is a project that the Mars Society can do.
We design processes to deal with medical and suit emergencies. How do we deal with cracked faceplates and punctured suits. How do we deal with ill people in a space suit.
One idea is to have an emergency tent small enough to have one person in it but which allows an operator from outside work on the casualty inside.

Correct!
Answer (a) was there just to confuse you, there's no form of CPR that involves that sort of compressions/breaths ratio. Answer © (That comes out like a copyright symbol, but it's meant to be c) sounds tempting at first, but it would be a very bad idea. In order to use a defibrilator it needs to be in direct contact with the victim's chest, and in one of these spacesuits that would require removing layer after layer of suit material. In the end you would end up wasting about four or five minutes at least just to get her top off, and by that point the battle's already practically lost.
Obviously answer (d) is a non-starter. For one thing, giving up is baaaad, it's not what we're supposed to do. For another , unless you are the Meridiani County Coroner or a trained M.D, how do you know she's dead? Legally, you wouldn't be allowed to make that call.
A good item for all astronauts on EVAs (That includes ISS-nauts, if anyone in high places is listening [And who would be]) would be some sort of big, person-size trash bag with a one-way valve and cylinder of a few minutes of compressed oxygen. In an emergency, the victim can be pushed through the one-way valve and then pressureize the bag. That would at leat buy you enough time for both astronauts to get back to the airlock and turn a disaster into a close call. Agreed, this would be something the Mars Society could develop procedures for, doing something worthwhile while pretending up in the Arctic.

Hey! Been thinking about that too, but a little different...
A really oversized plastic 'man-form' (like an inflatable doll)
with a zipper. and a little bottle of compressed oxy. That way person still has a (limited) amount of mobility. If person is not too heavily incapacitaded, much easier to let person walk by own power to rover/base.
Mars analog tests showed you need two carriers to transport suited figure, so could sae you some problems.
Another version is bigger: a quick and dirty tent like thing, big enough for two people, in case of bad accidents, or too far from base/rover to transport victim, you can administer first aid- stabilisation in a pressurized mini-dome...
Yes, good idea for the Society to figure out....

Was the need for first aid even a consideration for when we did Apollo and the lunar landings. Barely a bandaid was given do to the weight reductions need to be made for the changes in scientific equipment that was brought each time we went there.
Knowledge of how to and what is available to do the job are different issues.

ok ok here goes QUIZ 4; you are driving home from work alone in your own car, when you see a house on fire, suddenly the front door screeches open and a teenage boy runs out, his clothes are ablaze and upon seeing your car runs straight to YOU, he is WELL ON FIRE, what do you do?
a) beckon him into your car, there is a swimming pool less than 2 miles from here that you are fairly sure is open this time of day, you can drive him to the swimming pool very quickly
b) ignore the boy, there are quite possibly more members of his family inside, there is no time to waste, STORM in through the open door and see if you can rescue them all from the raging inferno
c) approach the boy in an authoritative manner, STOP HIM, move him to the ground immediately and roll him - if possible using some heavy fabric wrapped around him before the roll, with any luck, this should put his flames out
d) tell the boy to calm down and then set about finding a fire extinguisher, either in your own car or from one of the neighbours' houses or cars, before using the fire extinguisher though, tell the boy to close his eyes tightly
QUIZ 5
You feel that a night on the town is in order after you pass your astronomy exam
as you arrive at "Henry's Extra" night club, you see that there has been a fight
A man aged about 30 has been punched and his mouth has blood coming from it. As you arrive, a woman says to you "Look, his tooth has been punched out" and in the road you see a tooth lieing there. The woman picks the tooth up and with her bicycle water bottle, washes the tooth over with fresh water, handing the tooth to you - saying "That's evidence mate" There is no sign of the assailant
a) you tell the woman to keep the tooth in her water bottle, to keep it best preserved for the moment
b) you take the tooth, making sure that the poor victim is reassured, reinsert the tooth BACK into his tooth socket where it came from
c) you throw the tooth in the nearest waste bin, as it will only upset the poor guy
