Publicity efforts HAVE NOT STARTED so please don't do anything until this thread says otherwise. We don't want to jump the gun. This is just a thread for ideas right now.
In a perfect world, I would like to see First Words on every newspaper and major website. For that to happen, we have to let them know we exist, and show that we're interesting.
To solve the first problem, here are a few suggestions. We could email people like Slashdot, Fark, Memepool, Kuro5hin and so on - these guys are well known for creating and spreading web phenomenons to hundreds of thousands of people worldwide and bringing them to the attention of the 'traditional' media.
HOWEVER - I do not want any spamming taking place whatsoever, and we won't condone it. Volunteers should also abide by the rules of website that they want to submit to - for example, we can't submit a post to Metafilter (another big community weblog) because it prohibits self-promotion, and rightly so. Hopefully though we'll be cool enough for someone unrelated to us to post about us
Remember that small actions can have big consequences, so if you operate weblogs, websites or mailing lists, drop them a short note about First Words. Consider changing or adding a line to your email sig telling people about First Words.
I'm going to design a small button and line of HTML code that people can put on their websites to publicise First Words.
When the time is right, if you have contacts within the media, let them know about First Words. Contact local and college newspapers about the website. We may also pay for a short press release to go on the newswires.
Any other ideas?
