Re: Prizes

So: a good incentive for people to enter is a prize. I don't want to offer huge prizes, because not only is this not that kind of competition, but we just don't have the cash or pull yet. We could probably do $100 prize for top entry in each category though - maybe more if I can do some convincing in various quarters.

This thread isn't particularly about cash (although if you know where to find it, please go ahead) - it's about in-kind donations. Which publishers for books, videos, CDs, software, just things in general, could we contact to sponsor the competition? I know that Apogee books do a lot of Mars stuff, we might be able to get a few books off them. I certainly intend to donate a few Mars maps to winners.

Any suggestions?

Re: Prizes

*How about a one-year honorary membership to the Mars Society for non-members, or a one-year "free" membership to MS [next year's fee waived with full rights intact] for current registered members?  It'll only cost $25-$50 per winner [student and single, non-student rates].

Re: Prizes

*Another draw might be for winners to obtain a copy of the MS Charter, signed by Zubrin himself.  Is Buzz Aldrin still on the Steering Committee and a member of MS?  Maybe he'd be willing to sign as well.  Two such autographs on a hard-copy of the Charter would be cool.

Re: Prizes

I like Cindy's idea for a free membership in the Mars Society.  I'd like to get a free membership.  smile

Re: Prizes

Yep, good idea, I'll ask about getting a few free memberships and some autographed stuff. I emailed Maggie Zubrin about First Words a couple of days ago but haven't heard back yet - not entirely surprising since I imagine people are unwinding after the convention.

Re: Prizes

I heard back from Maggie - I'd requested two Case For Mars books and a large flag of Mars from the competition, and it's been accepted! Depending on how things go, I might ask for some free membership or a couple more books, but I'm happy with the two books and flag.

You can see the full prize list at http://www.newmars.com/firstwords/cat.shtml.
