http://www.hobbyspace.com/AAdmin/archiv … .html]Mars for Many
This is an 'add-on' to the fiction-series: 'The Rocket Company,' in wich a group of engineers establishes a way to make access to LEO a lot easier. In the epilogue, the founder of the company starts an new company, with the goal: establish real colonisation of Mars (ie. not an Antarctic-like scientific base, but a 'new world')
Let's assume, for the sake of argument, we have launches for 500$/pound (1000$/kg.) to LEO.
Does his new business-plan make any sense? Would you go? Why (not)? What kind of groups would go, given a chance? (At least *some* religious people will follow any attempt to colonise, if only to convert the 'heathens'...)
One problem is see, is of course the initial investment: the big ship and the (absolute minimal) infrastructure on Mars.
Think Spartan, and then some. Think hardship and then some.

No heathens out there to convert, but. . .
(a) Mars would make a bully pulpit to preach to Earth from.
Videotape is very easily exported from Mars to Earth. http://www.thespacereview.com/article/144/1]Link.
(b) Combine low cost Earth to LEO with robust CELSS and what do you get? Population explosion in space.
Whichever religion gets "out there" first, well they will fill the solar system.
