There seem to be one or two of those very dark depressions in the Columbia Hills. Rex Carnes has a hypothesis about similar areas in other parts of Mars being briny lakes and I've seen some of the pictures he's presented in support of that hypothesis. I have to say, he puts forward a very compelling case.
I'm especially keen for Spirit to be directed to those areas in the Columbia Hills so we can see what the dark surface consists of. It may just be shadow or very dark sand or a great accumulation of 'blueberries'. But what if we wake up one day to find that Spirit is standing on the shores of a small lake of highly salty water?! Wow!!!

The MERs are supposed to be there to look for evidence of water, past or present. What more fitting end to their exploration than to find a standing body of the stuff right there on the surface today?

How did you work out the optimum number of animation posts a member should be making each week here at New Mars? Was it a difficult calculation?
I just want you to know that I, for one, really appreciate you taking the time and trouble, out of your busy and fulfilling life, to point out the error of Luca's ways.

Seriously tho, you're being waaaaaay too harsh there. You should actually feel lucky that you get to see all Luca's wonderful pictures and animations; he must take ages over creating them and then uplinking them for us all to share and enjoy here. And with the flow of imags coming out of JPL being... well, shall we be kind and call it "erratic"... I for one now rely on people like Luca to keep me up to date with hi-quality images of Endurance Crater and the Columbia Hills.

And think about it. If it wasn't for Luca and others like him all we'd have to "enjoy" would be pictures of that frelling sundial...

Keep up the good work Luca!

My hosting site is too cheap... Infact, it gives 100 MB free space... but it doesn't work! :angry: The files are there, but nobody can read them: they have not the "read" attribute set. The strange thing is that I DO NOT set or unset the attributes, I just upload the files, and then... something happens ??? (What?!?)

I'll try to fix it... again (this is the 5th file I have to upload in this month: I always test my posts before posting and they work... then, some days after, the links break ???)

If I have just to concatenate frames, I use Ulead Gif Animator, but I don't know if it is the same you find on Internet, I found it bundled with an Italian magazine (it is version 4.0).
It also allows easy resampling of the animations, so you can easily create thumbnails-animations with a couple of click; and it can even save in AVI format!
For last two VERY complex animations I used Ulead Photoshop 6.0 (found in the same magazine) full version: it allowed me to move/zoom/cut the images inside each frame keeping in RAM also the not visible part of the image, so allowing to create the next frame from the previous just by moving/resampling the image.
...but each frame (in .UFO format) is 30 MB long! All frames in the original .UFO format are over 600 MB!
But it worths the effort, I think. :;):

See today so many post from cassioli. If you look at last actions almost all are from cassioli. I think 95% post last 2 weeks are from cassioli mostly pics of blue Mars and animations. He needs attention like a child. See this look that.
He floods this forum with his "discoveries" and I hope that he will reduce little bit his activity.

During my first year of undergraduate school, long ago in 1992-1993, sometimes my friends and I would go online and find a bulletin board (such a novelty at that time) and have our fun by harassing strangers in safe anonymity. Luca, I think the images and animations you've posted are great. I still don't know what to think about the difference between the colors in your images and the ones NASA calls "approximate true color" images, but yours are more fun to look at.

It's difficult to judge how steep those sandy slopes really are but I would guess something like 20 to 30 degrees(?). Depending on the looseness of the surface material, I assume some of those beautiful stretches of stratified rock will be out of reach of the RAT because the rover won't be able to get up to them.
Is this a fair and reasonable assessment of the situation? I hope I've got it all wrong.

Have the rovers a system to detect their inclination? And have they a measurement of the pancam inclination? Maybe if we know that the rover is exactly horizontal and we know the inclination of the pancam when pointing to two different points of the closer slope, we could determine how steep it is, as probably we can determine de distance of the two points thanks to the presence of a couple of camera on the pancam... ???
