Rocky Persaud, President of the Mars Society Canada, has set up a webcasting station called Radio Free Mars. Some relevant information:
Have you heard of the audio-streaming web station we here in Canada have set up, Radio Free Mars? We are just getting started. On July 4th our first transmission was of the Orson Welles "War of the Worlds" broadcast from 1938, but the site is down now until we get more organized. Right now, we are building the website and recruiting producers, commentators, reporters and DJs. The MarsNews.com group will be providing the weekly news for us.
Over a week every block of programming is played during prime hours in every part of the world. Hopefully this will be a useful tool for weaving the Mars Society volunteers around the world into a
closer organization, and making it truly global.Eventually, uploading of content will be possible through our webpage, but that will take a few weeks. Anyone wishing to share responsibility for a block of programming please let me know. Non-english programming is welcome.
Block 1 - Eastern NA / Toronto
Block 2 - Central NA (Colorado? Ohio?)
Block 3 - Western NA (San Francisco? San Diego? Seattle?)
Block 4 - Australia (Sydney? Adelaide?)
Block 5 - Asia / (Hong Kong? Tokyo?)
Block 6 - Eastern Europe (Warsaw? Moscow?)
Block 7 - Western Europe (London? Paris? Berlin?)Content could be chosen from among the following libraries of files:
1. Martian Masterpiece Theatre -- fiction
2. Mars Rocks -- Mars themed music
3. The Rant from Olympus -- commentators on various Mars/space subjects
4. Weekly Mars News -- the latest news report in Mars science
5. Mars Society Town Hall / Red Planet Satellite Report
6. The Face of Mars -- interviews / presentations by Mars scientists
7. Daily Mission Reports -- debriefings and other audio files from the HabsWe also need people to share responsibility for each of the above seven file libraries. Volunteers to organize a block or a file library would be appreciated.
So, Rocky needs some volunteers. Anyone out there want to give a hand?
In order to make this a bit more attractive to people, I've suggested to Rocky that we should have a New Mars program on the webcast - we do have what is probably the largest, busiest and fastest growing Mars forum on the Internet here, and I'm sure there's more than enough interesting discussion here to fit (say) a weekly show.
If you're interested, reply to this thread. Also, you can email Rocky at rocky.persaud@utoronto.ca.

I'm going to have to tune into this station sometime. I'd love to volunteer for something like this in some capacity--particularly the commentary related programming.

Sure, please volunteer. I'm busy with other projects, so I've recruited other people to organize RFM. We have a mailing list at Yahoo (send to RadioFreeMars-subscribe@yahoogroups.com) but some members apparently have problems with accessing some of the web features. The Mars Society Canada webmaster has developed a message board over to which we might move the organizational discussion.
RadioFreeMars-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
All you need is a microphone and your soundcard on your computer to make recordings. I would love to hear some lively discussions on RFM. Care to organize a New Mars group chat?

I was wondering how you were going to do your programming with people spread out all over the place. I don't have a microphone but that's nothing a little dinero can't solve.

I would be interested in participating in some way or another. Good microphones are quite inexpensive.
Incidentally, where can you listen to radio free mars? Is anything broadcsting constantly yet?

I saw a link to RFM on the Mars Society webpage a few days ago.

If someone (aka Adrian or someone) wants to select some of our discussions on the webboard to be recorded for radio free mars I would be happy to record them.In fact I would be happy to record just about anything for radio free mars.

I'm not exactly sure what, if anything the RFM task force is up to these days, but MarsNews.com has begun a weekly radio program called "Radio Free Mars" with the blessing of the task force.
We have recorded four programs already and are beginning a two-part series focusing on the Mars Society. Part one will be out this Tuesday, April 1st and our guest will be Harold Miller, lead webmaster of the Mars Society (no april fools here). We'll also have an in-depth look at the Mars Direct mission plan popularized by Dr. Robert Zubrin.
For part two, due out Tuesday, April 8th, our guest will be Rocky Persaud, President of Mars Society Canada and commander of the first expedition to the Mars Desert Research Station. He also visited the Flashline Arctic Research Station, and therefore the focus will be on the Mars Society's analogue research program.
We will most likely have additional guests from the Mars Society in the future... maybe even the big kahuna Dr. Zubrin (although I haven't asked him yet and only want to approach him when the show is ready)
All our weekly hour-long programs are archived as MP3 files available for downloading & streaming on our website.

I've listened to the last few programs and enjoyed every minute. Keep up the thought-provoking discussions!
Guests I'd like to see:
Sen. Bill Nelson or Rep. Dave Weldon
Dr. Benton C. Clark of Lockheed Martin Astronautics
More people from Mars Society HQ
David Portree (of "Romance to Reality" fame)
Mark Wade (creator of Encyclopedia Astronautica)
Who needs Michael Griffin when you can have Peter Griffin? Catch "Family Guy" Sunday nights on FOX.

I've also enjoyed the interviews. Since the space elevator seems to be a controversial and current topic I'd like to see Dr.Brad Edwards featured in one of the shows. He's tinkered with the idea of a Martian space elevator and it might be interesting to hear him go into detail about it as well as the Earth based one. Here's his book.
Also, you should interview Adrian. Not only does he run New Mars but it would be interesting to hear his take on various things from the "First Words" contest to participating in the Mars research station.

Long ago there used to be Lunar Moon group of Birmingham that made their own broadcasts and clubs and declarations, over time world events change and sometimes people change or go to other places. I am not sure what became of this radio James Burk and Dustin Green marsnews works but the marsnews dot com radio link seems to be a dead link, however Mars News is still active and the main page was updated this year. Rocky Persaud has wrote many research papers, search results now provide 30 Seconds to Mars, Surviving Mars Official Mars Radio, 'Radio Free Mars Talk'. Another name people might know 'Radio Free Europe' better known a United States government-funded media organization that broadcasts information, news, and analysis to countries in Eastern Europe, maybe to counter USSR propaganda. In politics and culture the fall of a news station, a political government in Afghanistan, the AFRTS stations in Vietnam initially known by the name "AFRS" Armed Forces Radio Saigon but expanded throughout South Vietnam became known as "AFVN" and the Fall of old Soviet Russian radio at the end of the USSR can mark the end of an era. Mars will one day perhaps have a radio if humans landing there want a radio broadcast to listen to. Radio Free Mars now links to a fictional book by James Kent. Upon search of podcasts, youtubes and deezer and spotify sometimes 'Radio Free Mars' returns rock music stations
