Re: Living on mars. - Would you personally live on Mars?

Roughly applicable to this topic [googled from New Scientist] is this letter to the Editor. My own reply (in common with Bush) would have to be: Exploring Mars is the most exciting thing to be seen to be doing just now, and besides, I'm not gettin' any younger, stupid!

Gravity trap
Can anyone explain why George Bush is so keen to climb out of one deep gravity well (Earth) just to jump down another (Mars)?
It makes much more sense, if (wo)manned space exploration is the aim, to target low-mass bodies such as moons, asteroids and comets where habitation resources and fuel for (far easier) onward trips also exist. Surely the moral is, when you're in a hole, stop digging; not, let's dive in another! Or is this just a case of the mountaineer's motive "Because it's there"?

Re: Living on mars. - Would you personally live on Mars?

It depends on what kind of life I will have when I get there and who will be there with me. I know my girlfriend wouldn?t come to mars with me.

I bet you could find one who would, though!

Yes. Even if it meant washing dishes there for a living for the rest of my life. (And i've done exactly that several years in a row, so i know what i'm talking about, for once(!))

I'd go to Mars in a heartbeat, and live there, but not without my wife.

Before the wife and kids came along, I would say, “sign me up.”

I might like to retire there. A oneway ticket would work.

Re: Living on mars. - Would you personally live on Mars?

Uh Oh!  There seems to be a theme developing here.

My own wife has already told me that she would prefer to live on Earth.  Unfortunately, this was revealed _after_ the wedding!

(Should have included it in the wedding vows.  Dang It!)

Alas, I am bound to another one of those Earth-loving wives.

Not only did she not reveal this until after the wedding, but she misled me.  She likes Star Wars, man!!!  But I didn't really become obsessed with Mars until after we were married either.

Guess I'll just start a band then... :band:

Re: Living on mars. - Would you personally live on Mars?

Yeah seems to be a re-occuring theme here. I'd go to Mars one way without giving it a second thought, if it wasn't for the girlfriend and family I'd be leaving behind forever. Of course I'd love for them to come along too, but most wouldn't easily give up the comforts of Earth. To me living on Mars would be an epic adventure, but to her it would be more like living in a tuna can. *Sigh*  roll

Re: Living on mars. - Would you personally live on Mars?

how long would it be before those arriving to live on mars suddenly developed a home sick yearning to go back to Earth?

a) 3 months
b) 6 months
c) 1 year
d) 2 years

I predict that many many "terraformers" become extremely depressed with "home sick blues" after realising that Mars is not the beautiful fantasy that they beleived in after all   yikes

It depends largely on who you send. Even then, the right crew would, even when they begin to 'miss' Earth, have no desire to actually go back. We'd just have to send people with reasons that not only bind them to Mars but repel them from Earth.

I can get such a crew of 50 ready by next week.  big_smile

So what do I need to do to get a one way ticket and how soon can I leave? I would do the same even if it were the moon.

Re: Living on mars. - Would you personally live on Mars?

I question for the people who said yes.

Who would you want to give up your comfortable lives on this very beautifull planet and go to a planet many times more hostile then Antartica? I mean there are hardly people living on Antartica now, so what makes Mars more special?

Re: Living on mars. - Would you personally live on Mars?

Well, America wouldn`t be like it is today without pioneers. It`s entirely possible to be too comfortable. I`ve deliberately lived on the streets when i had money & a place to live. People need challenges, it`s in our blood. & i think there are plenty of women who would go to Mars. & there are plenty of places to go once one gets there even on a 1-way trip, Phobos, The Moon, The Asteroids. I honestly think people will eventually get restless on Mars even.
