It looks like another space race could be heating up. China is looking to start a manned space program. Lot's of people were excited to here china might try to establish a moon base by 2010, only for some china officials to come out and say the moon was not quite what they have in mind anymore. Something telling me the same people that convinced their leaders space is the way to go found Zubrin's books, so now china is quietly going to mars?!

China's having second thoughts about its moon ambitions? If they have I hope it is because they just want to skip ahead to Mars and forget the moon altogether. I get the feeling though that if they are backing off it probably means they've lost interest in going anywhere and will likely be stuck in the same LEO prison the rest of the world is, if they even intend to stay in space for anything other than military applications.
Oh well, I guess we should stay optimistic until we know for sure.

I just checked around where I read about chinese heavy lift rockets. They aparently will only use twenty ton heavy lift rockets. Zubrin suggests forty ton rockets. Then again, maybe they are just going to do it differently.

I had read that China was designing a rocket called "Type E" that could lift 70-80 tonnes to orbit or launch their Shenzhou lander on a course for the moon. Because the United States is so used to buying things made in China, NASA may as well buy the Type E instead of going ahead with the "Magnum" booster it's had on the drawing boards.

I haven't heard anything about China abandoning its lunar ambitions for a flight to Mars, but it would be neat to know that Zubrin's ideas may have changed the course of their space program.

Well, that is exciting to hear. I'd love to know where you read that, but then again, I'd like to refind where I read the china no longer views the moon as the top priority; sure, they're interested, but it now seems they think the moon secondary for some reason.

There is a military aspect to China's Shenzhou manned spacecraft, after all.

Right now, Shenzhou's military role is the benign one of reconnaissance. But the west should still be cautious at this time, because the overtly military nature of Shenzhou might be a harbinger of more aggressive plans for space. This recent development should not come as a surprise to anybody who's been following the Chinese space program.

I have no doubt whatever, that the new China administration has its sights on the Moon. It's all been done before, so the first part is theirs for the taking, i.e. How to get there, and return. The supply and colonization parts already have been analyzed enough to show the way. No other nation can possibly prevent them from doing it, so?. It's a no-brainer!

It's true that no nation can PREVENT China from returning to the moon; the question is whether anybody can BEAT them to it.

I, for one, would like to see another moon race, but I don;t think we will. The United States has no morale to boost or fanfare to be gained by returning to the moon. There are plenty of scientific and economic reasons to return, but that will be a private effort and not a NASA effort. Instead, China will have a man on the moon, and probably within the decade.

According a leader at their equivalent of NASA, the Moon is top priority following LEO. It makes sense seeing as how a majority of Chinese space plans are based on the need for military supremacy. The Moon poses a more lucrative "high ground" than does Mars; and in China, what the military wants, it gets. But I see Mars as also being on their near term plans as well. A lot of their releases talk about the need for living space for humanity and the need to colonize to bring new resources to its industry. I just hope China keeps up its plans, because without that threat, the US is not very likely to go anywhere anytime soon. Space isn't a priority for congress (as it very much should be) but defense is.
