Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

I was planning to write a new message to the the thread "Commercial Viability of Space", initiated by me some weeks ago. Prior to start writing, I came upon a few minor details in need of editing in the original post (spelling errors and the like; items I thought were already cleared in fact), but as I pressed the "submit modified" button, most of the messages disappeared.
The symptoms seem identical to what happened to "Who needs a Space Station?", also started by me.

What's going on here? Can it be rescued? I'm very sorry about all this, the mess etc, and additionally so since it was probably one of the better posts I have written on this forum and there were a number of interesting comments I would have liked to pick up from.

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

Thanks BGD for sharing your old tricks and Rxke for you concern. I've managed to recover most of the lost posts, possibly with the only exception of number four, and copied them to a word document.

So if the administration is unable to waste time repairing the thread, I could always launch it anew and quote the previous discussion in my initial message(s). Maybe I'll change some minor details in my own replies if that's okay by you (not modifying the content).

Problem is I'm not very certain who actually wrote what, but maybe a few hints could be provided?

Been away from the boards for some time now. Feels good to be back. smile

Regards,
Gennaro

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

Thanks, it's very encouraging. The pleasure is all mine of course.

You can see who posted that. Just click the "Preview Post" button. For example, for post number 1:

-Oh, I see. This is obviously not a day when my neurons are working overtime.

Anyway, you think it would be a good idea for me to repost the messages in a brand new thread? Not right now, but at an appropriate time? Then the administration can always remove the corrupted thread whenever they feel like it.

Yeah, that 'Commercial Viability' thread has basically died. You should start a new thread.

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

Unfortunately repairing threads doesn't always work... sad

So if you see a locked thread where Adrian has tried to repair it, then he's probably tried a couple of times to no avail. Best to lock corrupting threads anyway, just as a safety precaution.

I can rebuild threads though, so if you see any corrupt ones, just feel free to let me know, I'll see what I can do.

(For the record, I haven't noticed any corruptions in awhile; we've been through several upgrades, and I think they fixed 'em all.)

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

Hello Josh, I was just going to access that thread in order to bring out all the appropriate message information (who wrote what when), but it seems you've managed to lock it already. Sorry, I'm late as usual.
Would you please mind unlocking it again maybe, so I can write a new thread, or have you perhaps embarked on the gentle mission of reviving it yourself?

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

Gennaro, it's looks to be quite lost. Adrian locked it before but I tried messing with it, just because you asked. It's a shame to lose a good discussion (especially on that topic which does interest me a lot, I'm very curious as to the things people could come up with).

I'd followed BGD's suggestion, and at that point it didn't work (this was before it was locked), so I suspect it broke even worse from when he said to do that. Nothing was salvagable (I was going to handquote everyone and try to start a new thread...).

(I locked it again just so the database wouldn't get fried, I personally don't feel right with the topic still being there even locked... I promised not to delete anything 'cept spam, though, so I'll let Adrian delete it if it makes him as uncomfortable as it does me, heh... what a weird thing.)

Guess it's up to you guys to start over. sad

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

Dammit, it worked yesterday and BGD's quote proves it! Sometimes it just get's that close I guess...

Code Sample

I'll try to initiate adiscussion on this topic. Any aspect of space economics is considered relevant. From the thread "Reasons Against Mars Direct": ................

Anyway, I'm lucky to have the messages saved to my HD, although I don't have the authors (minor detail, really).
Thanks Josh, for trying to repair it. I'm sure you did your best and I'm sorry it didn't work out.

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

It does in fact look like we're using DBM. Which surprises me because my IkonBoard DBM managed forum is actually pretty slow, and NewMars is blazingly fast. Guess it's the hardware. smile

Clicking on "Members" still produced a horrible warning notice. I wonder if anyone besides me gets this?

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

I don't get it. Might be that you're using a different skin.

Yes, we are currently using the DBM database. When I installed this board last year I wasn't aware that it had any problems - oh well. Another thing on the to-do list.

Josh, the reason the forums run so fast is because our webhost, Pair, has absolutely wonderful hardware and bandwidth. It's not especially cheap, but it's definitely worth it smile

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

I don't know what you mean by "different skin." This is what I get when I click on "Members":

Ikonboard has exited with the following error:

Undefined subroutine &MemberlistView::title_end_show_row called

This error was reported at: Sources/Memberlist.pm line 465, line 64.

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

Have you tried logging out and logging back in? Or perhaps going to your profile and changing your skin to default? Oddly, I do not get this error message, I thought that it perhaps was because I was logged in as admin, but logging out did not result in the error message.

Sorry for the troubles, if I could replicate it I could get some answers.

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

I recall someone saying having trouble listing the Spirit and Opportunity in the 'new posts' (Cindy?)

Don't find it back, though.

anyway, just to say I also experienced the anomaly of not getting the S&O thread in the 'new posts' some days ago. Now it's working O.K.

Still does it, every time. If I knew what you mean by "changing my skin" (?) I might try that.

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

Dicktice, I have met the same problem.

Solution:
Go to 'your control panel' (upper left)
then choose 'account options', there you can choose a skin: now it's 'standard ikonboard skin' change it to aurora, fixes the problem... but the board looks a bit different. (that's the skin)

OH BTW, the S&O not showing in 'new posts' has occured again.... Weird.

Re: Another Corrupt Thread? - "Commercial Viability of Space"

*This doesn't have anything to do with threads or posts, but I don't want to create a new thread just for it.

My messenger in- and out-boxes started screwing up today.  None of the PM's I've sent (2) are in "Sent" (although I checked them to be copied to "Sent"), and 3/4 of messages in both boxes are gone now.

::shrugs::

It's no BIG deal, but this just occurred today and I'm wondering if it might not indicate a potentially larger problem?

That's very strange, I haven't seen it before. Maybe your mailboxes were full up?
