Re: Beagle 2 - What's happening?

Hi, naughty dickbill is back with naughty feedback  !

HMS Beagle2 has always been mediatized as a british, not an european, experiment. Has it been succesful, no doubt  that it would have been entirely devoted to Her Majesty Glory as a british success.
But now, I guess Beagle2 will become an european failure.

The british subjects of Her Majesty know the truth : it's Prince Charles, whose only occupation seems to organise crimes in his own disfunctional family. Prince Charles, no doubt, secretely organised the sabotage of HMS Beagle 2 among other secret complots.
Why ? probably a secret family affair, just wait and see.

Re: Beagle 2 - What's happening?

*Ah, dickbill...I'm not even going to touch that.

Beagle (Reuters)

The above article outlines especially the financial aspect of Beagle 2, and comparisons of the UK's space-related budget as contrasted with France and Germany.

I'm sad to read they're considering Beagle 3 a "longshot" (in the context of the article, it seems that is emphasized).

"'With the loss of Beagle I'm very worried about our space program,' said Richard Taylor of the British Interplanetary Society, founded in 1933 to promote interest in space.

'If it succeeded, it would have been an immense boost for all of us and would have made the space business much more attractive. I'm hoping there'll be a Beagle 3 but I'm not overly optimistic,'" he added.

As I mentioned previously, I hope the U.S. would be willing to provide transportation for Beagle 3 aboard one of our future missions to Mars as a goodwill gesture; at least make the offer.

Re: Beagle 2 - What's happening?

What a terrible article. It's hardly worth reading - full of ad hominem attacks on Pillinger and the United Kingdom. It would be trivial to write a rebuttal of every single point the author made, but it would be a complete waste of time because I can't see anyone taking that piece of rubbish seriously.

*Damn.  I'm all for freedom of speech and expression, so here's mine:  Mr. Bell is beyond juvenile.  He sounds like a...well, I won't insult the animal which just came to mind (long ears and brays a lot).

Utterly PATHETIC.  I'm very disappointed with spacedaily.com for hosting it.  The gloating is sadistic, imo -- I almost feel like throwing up (not exaggerating).

When people within the scientific community stoop to this level, something is seriously wrong in my opinion.  And how can ANY legitimate Professor of Planetology be happy about the fact that whatever indispensible data Beagle 2 could have retrieved/gathered is apparently lost forever?

Re: Beagle 2 - What's happening?

Bell has written other stuff at Spacedaily. He is a fairly regular columnist. Anyone care to guess Professor Bell's opinion of MarsDirect?

I suspect he deems Robert Zubrin to be Captain of the Space Cadet Corps. Or perhaps Admiral.

IMO, Bell is an educated fool (generally the worst sort...next to old fools).

Re: Beagle 2 - What's happening?

I don't know why I read that whole thing. I don't even know why I read SpaceRef... they're a very politically charged site. Can't we have space- nay, science without politics or religious intervention? I mean, man... where's the sensiblity?

I dunno about you guys, but I thought Beagle 2 was one hell of an attempt. Anyone saying the Beagle 2 people don't have courage, don't have the very human spirit we claim to be proud of, is really shortsighted. The whole point of the human spirit is taking big gambles.

Anyone who bashes Beagle 2 is just a fool.

Re: Beagle 2 - What's happening?

Um... it was on SpaceDaily, not spaceref...

Anyway, they havet their own messageboard, you can always react there, but i'm afraid it's not *really* an integral part of Spacedaily...
I Personally always liked Spacedaily, their guestwriters are sometimes a bit 'extreme' maybe that's to stir up some discussion, but this last article... Boy...

Epitaph?

"Don't mourn for Beagle2," says Prof. Pillinger.

Re: Beagle 2 - What's happening?

My bet is on the landing bags. The whole thing was just too small to package them appropriately.
We should send out a new lander. Bigger, better, bio-dedicated, all-European; not just a British pocket watch. No need for Professor Pillinger to shave off his side-burns though. He should be put in charge of the new team and bring his associates with him. With the amount of experience gained on designing Beagle 2 what would they not achieve with twice the payload capacity?

Let's hear it for Beagle 3! smile

*Yes!

I read the article Rik posted.  It's great to know there is still a chance (actually...2 more chances!).  Based on the last report I read, I figured they'd already (quietly) declared Beagle 2 "dead."

A chance is a chance, after all.

"Confirmation that Beagle really is dead will come after one last option has been pursued.  This involves sending the lander a command via the US Mars Odyssey orbiter telling it to reboot its computer.  If the probe is still intact on the Martian surface and capable of receiving the message, it could just kick-start the Beagle into communicating. But Professor Pillinger told reporters it was a long shot."

-also-

"'We can also ask Mars Express to send that command. However, they cannot send it probably until the 2 or 3 February,' he added."

C'mon Beagle 2!!  smile  Let's hear from you!

It just goes to show how much we don't know for sure about the planet if both the Beagle team and NASA underestimated the density of the atmosphere - and all the more reason for getting more probes up there to tell us what its like before sending a manned mission.
I've looked at the image from the article, and looked, and looked, but there is nothing that stands out as being the obvious remains of Beagle2, it would be good to see the image the mention early in the article about a separate object near to Beagle2.
Lets hope they get a closer look at the 'string of pearls' soon, or we might not see anything at all after March this year accoring to Colin Pillinger in this [http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994752]New Scientist Article.
