Join us as we welcome North Houston Space Society president, Christean Kapp, as our featured guest speaker. Chris Kapp studied aerospace engineering in Germany. He has spent decades working in Europe, India, and the USA with companies such as Rolls-Royce and Siemens using this knowledge in the energy industry.Chris is finishing a graduate degree in history on the topic on the relationship between ESA and NASA. Chris is a published author and a long time member of the NSS where he is an accredited space ambassador and heads the NSS North Houston Chapter.
The European Space Agency is little known in the USA. Who and what is ESA? It has 22 members and one of them is not even in Europe.As Artemis goes to the Moon, ESA will be there too. We will highlight the development of ESA and its significant achievements in rocketry, satellites and planetary probes.Looking at the interactions with the Soviet Interkosmos program we will also identify important NASA missions that wouldn't have worked without ESA.We will also take a look into the sometimes complex and sometimes dramatic relationship between NASA and ESA. Chris will share previously unpublished research results from his master thesis on ESA's incredible journey into space.
Two member organizations of the Alliance, The North Houston Space Society and the Houston Chapter of The Mars Society have teamed up to create this event. The meeting will take place Saturday August 8, from 1:00pm - 3:00pm at the Houston Saengerbund in the Heights at 1703 Heights Blvd.

The combined ISS and Mars Society chapters in Houston are hosting a presentation next Saturday. The featured speaker is a just retired NASA engineer with extensive experience in human/computer interfaces for space flight.

Recently retired after 40+ years at NASA, Mr. Salazar helped shape the future of human spaceflight through groundbreaking work in avionics, human-computer interfaces, telemetry, speech recognition, intelligent lighting, and systems engineering.
A patent holder, award-winning engineer, and recognized leader in Human Systems Integration he played key roles in the Commercial Crew Program, SpaceX Dragon crew interfaces, and the Artemis Human Lander System. He also co-founded NASA/JSC’s Human Systems Integration Employee Resource Group to embed HSI into NASA development practices. Mr. Salazar holds multiple engineering degrees. He is a licensed Texas professional engineer, an INCOSE-certified Expert Systems Engineering Professional, a lifetime senior member of IEEE, and a member of Eta Kappa Nu.
His presentation will focus on Certifying Human-Computer Interfaces for Deep Space: Challenges for the Moon and Beyond.
We will learn how NASA certifies human-computer interface subsystems for deep-space missions. Using Artemis as a backdrop, Mr. Salazar traces the evolution of HCI from Apollo to today and highlights the technical, human-performance, and autonomy challenges of preparing crews for missions to the Moon and beyond. Attendees will also explore how future tools—such as digital twins—could help test and refine mission scenarios that cannot be fully replicated on Earth.

This announcement of the September 12th meeting came in from NSS North Houston. The first one came from the Mars Society chapter. I asked about online service and learned that NSS headquarters had inquired as well. Apparently an effort will be made to record the meeting. If that happens and the recording is made public, I'll let you know here.

Challenges Certifying Human–Computer Interfaces (HCI) for Deep Space Missions
What does it take to ensure that the displays, controls, and computer interfaces astronauts depend on are ready for missions to the Moon and beyond?
George will introduce NASA’s human-rating certification process and trace the evolution of astronaut interfaces from Apollo to Artemis. He’ll explore the challenges of certifying modern hardware and autonomous systems for deep-space missions, including how to test human performance under the physical and psychological demands of spaceflight.
The presentation will also look ahead to how digital twins—virtual representations of systems—might help evaluate future mission scenarios beyond those tested during certification on Earth.
About the Speaker
George Salazar’s NASA career included serving as the Human–Computer Interface Technical Discipline Lead, overseeing astronaut interfaces for SpaceX’s Crew Dragon as the Commercial Crew Program’s Displays and Controls Subsystem Manager, and managing human–computer interfaces for the Artemis lunar lander program.
A licensed professional engineer with degrees in electrical engineering and systems engineering, George holds several patents and has received numerous honors, including the NASA Silver Achievement Medal.

The upcoming meeting on Saturday 2026/09/12 is currently planned for on site attendence.
However, discussion is under way to see if NewMars might be able to assist with distribution of the meeting online.
Several ideas are in play. One of these is for us to host the Google Meeting just like our regular Sunday evening meetings, with the difference that attendance would include validated attendees from other organizations than Mars Society.
I'll report any news that may develop.
I ** do ** understand that someone from ISS headquarters has inquired about attending online. The speaker is apparently of interest to someone there.
It would indeed by a positive development if the ** official ** Mars Society forum were able to facilitate distribution of this meeting online.
