Canada and USA need each other. Canada exports potash, the industrial agricultural fertilizer for potassium. There are only 3 countries exporting potash: Canada, Russia, and Belarus. Without potash, American agriculture would experience significant drop in yield.
Canada supplies 99% of the natural gas that America imports. And 60% of the oil that America imports.
America produces 13 to 13.5 million barrels of oil per day, and imports 6.5 to 6.6 million barrels per day. Of the imports, 4 to 4.5 million barrels per day come from Canada. 0.46 to 0.60 million barrels per day from Mexico.
The US consumes 50.7 billion board feet of softwood lumber per year, and produces 37 million board feed. 11.9 billion board feet from Canada.
US consumes 5 million metric tonnes of aluminum per year, of which 2.7 to 3.2 million metric tonnes from Canada. The US only produces 0.678 million metric tonnes.
Canada exports roughly 35.6 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity to the United States each year. One tera is one million mega. Supplying under 2% of total US electricity consumption but serving as a vital regional power source for several northern US states.
Again, the US needs Canada. We are all hoping the current attempts to bully Canada will stop, and we can return to fair trade.

I have not been following North American politics closely. But I remember that during Trump's first term, he made a lot of progress building NAFTA into a single trading block, with fewer barriers to trade. Mexico was brought into NAFTA. At the same time, he established tariffs on goods imported from China. Both moves made sense. The Chinese are a strategic competitor and ageing demographics make it sensible to reduce dependence on them. Their manufacturing economy does not have a long term future as workshop of the world. A unified North American block makes a great deal of sense. Mexico is able to dominate low end manufacturing and has a large consumer market with good demographic age structure. The US has a big consumer market, a skilled workforce and is able to do high end manufacturing. Canada has an established industrial base that is deeply integrated with the US and is a massive natural resource base. Back in 2016, North America looked like it would be an excellent place to be to weather the next century. Trump's trade policies in his first term were sensible and looked like they would build a trading block that would be prosperous for many decades into the future.
During his second term, everything that was accomplished in his first run was torn to pieces. NAFTA has been abandoned. All of the progress made during the first term was abandoned. It appears a dreadful shame to me. Maybe there are reasons behind this that I cannot see.

Hi Calliban,
Bill Clinton created NAFTA in 1993, coming into force January 1, 1994. Ronald Regan created the binational free trade agreement with Canada in 1988. Negotiations for that started 1984. Clinton added Mexico in 1994 because he was worried the EU would become the dominant world economy. The EU in 1993/'94 was just western first world European countries with modern industrial economies, and total population larger than US and Canada combined. Although Mexico had a 3rd world economy back then, this gave NAFTA a population to compete with the EU.
George W. Bush pushed to make the US dependant on only North American oil. The US had gotten involved in too many wars in the Middle East, so the idea was to eliminate US dependence on Middle East oil so the US could ignore the Middle East, just stay out of whatever petty regional war happens next. The US had developed fracking, so increased domestic oil production. Between US domestic oil with oil from Canada and Mexico, the US was set.
Then California decided they don't like Canadian oil. Extracting the tar sands was too icky. So the US started importing oil from other locations to reduce Canadian oil: Venezuela, Brazil, Middle East. Under Obama thr Keystone XL pipeline was canceled. It was to carry more oil from Canada. Trump restarted Keystone XL. Biden canceled it again. Companies will not work on Keystone XL again, even if Trump authorizes it, because it's been canceled too many times and they lost too much money.
During Trump's first administration, NAFTA came up for renewal. Trump negotiated hard. He signed an agreement Mexico, leaving Canada out. Canada was told sign-on, take it or leave it. It wasn't what Canada wanted, but was something.
Now Trump is talking to Vladimir Putin. Russia treated Ukraine and all countries under their influence as vassal states, and resource colonies. Russia raped those countries of resources, ensuring all economic benefits went to Russia. And not all of Russia, to the core of Russia. Russia also treats Siberia, their far east, and Caucasus areas of Russia as resource colonies. Trump believes he can treat Canada like that. And Trump believes he can dictate to NATO, just as Russia dictated to Warsaw Pact.

There are those who say that the war is between globalists and sovietism.
On this battlefield, in some ways, Russia and China are in allegiance with us. But not in most ways, necessarily.
Here is a voice. I don't claim that I am in allegiance with her and her group, but the temptation is large.
Our co-operation with the British, lead to the destruction of the so called Rust Belt. Granted that was due in a large part to a dependence on OPEC oil. But it is beginning to appear that was what was intended.
It is a curious matter that the European Colonial system is trying to rise to power using globalism. And yet they do not have balance. They can never unite the world. Only lead it to conflict.
America choosing to be Sovern and not join in the foolish effort to try to subjugate Russia and China, prefer to have our own thing. If Canada and others choose to be enemies then they should expect to be treated different than they were treated in previous ages.

Void, that post is so strange, I don't know how to reply. There has been a battle between freedom vs dictatorships. Russia was a dictatorship under the Tzars until 1917. The communists did what all communist regimes do: quickly became a dictatorship. We had hope after the Soviet Union broke up, Russia had become a democracy and attempted the transition to a free market economy. Then Putin took over, ruling with an iron fist using techniques he learned as a KGB agent under the Soviets. China is a communist dictatorship.
If you ally yourself with Russia and China, then you are enemy of the United States.
America never did try to subjugate Russia or China. America tried to ensure Russia and China do not subjugate the rest of the world. Russian people are good people, and deserve freedom and the economic prosperity that comes with a free-market economy.

The Russian Empire was run by a king or queen, not a dictator. No worse than the British Monarchy, I expect.
Please try harder. The Russians and Chinese are dangerous as they have interests of their own. But that does not mean that their interests never align with ours.
The psychotic urge to fight Asian associated peoples, is a result of both the French and the British not being balanced people. They orbit Africa more than China. But America is the balance. When the French and British seek to divide the world into waring parts, as a war against the actual structure of reality they waste their time, as if like a Roman Emperor Waring with the ocean.
We will always count our fingers when dealing with Russia and China, but we understand that they are part of what is reality.

The Roman Emperor Who “Warred” with the Ocean
The emperor most famously linked to declaring war on the sea was Caligula (Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus), who ruled from 37 to 41 AD

https://www.britannica.com/place/Russia … icholas-II
Prior to 1917, Russia was an absolute dictatorship under the tsars. There was a bureaucracy, through which the tsar delegated power. But the bureaucrats were directly responsible to the the tsar and could be replaced by him at will. They were also poorly educated and reluctant to make decisions, such that a great deal of decision making fell to the tsar himself. Attempts at devolving power to an aristocracy failed. The general opinion was that this would impede the ability of the tsar to steer the nation towards greatness.
After 1917, the bureaucracy was reorganised, but Russia remained a dictatorship until the death of Stalin. After that, there were limited democratic reforms.
Ironically perhaps, Russia is more democratic now than it has ever been. There are free elections and they are not corrupt. But there are serious doubts about freedom of the media in Russia. Putin has been repeatedly elected because he is popular amongst Russians, for better or worse. He is not a dictator, he does rule by will of the people. But the will of the people is no guarantor of peace. Not when public opinion places more weight on the glory of the state than it does for human freedom. As strange as it sounds, that is where Russia is. It's violent military stance is supported by public opinion. The Russians simply are an uncompromising and forcefull people.
I have met a few Russians over the years. In the UK, you come across them from time to time. Some of them have been decent enough. A lot of them were fleabags. My youngest son has a Russian girlfriend. She is a pretty and gentle young woman. Her father was a violent alcoholic. He and her mother divorced after he beat her so hard that she needed surgery. She no longer speaks to her brother, after he knocked out his wife's front teeth. My son doesn't like her feminism and the way she moans about the patriarchy. I try to remind him how different Russia is to most other countries. In the west, feminist women that moan about the patriarchy are mostly mentally ill nutjobs that you should stay away from. But in Russia, the patriarchy is very real. Violence against women is all too real. And my son's girlfriend is complaining about something real. The chief problem in Russia is not the government. It is the Russians themselves.

The Lotus Eaters discuss Alberta independence.
I get the feeling that ordinary Canadians are thoroughly pissed off with the federal government. Following over a decade of intense mass immigration, about one third of Canadian residents are now Indian! Manitoba is now majority non-white. The situation looks awful. Trudeau promised to 'replace' the Canadians that rebelled against him in the trucker protests. He did exactly that. The Liberal government survived because Canadians thought that keeping it would be a good way of punishing Trump. It was a childish tantrum that didn't help them at all. And the internal problems created by that government, it's lax immigration and it's stupid green policies, now threaten to tear Canada apart. They feed the antagonism between Canada and the US and stand in the way of a solution. But independence really isn't a good way forward for Alberta. It would be even more easily pushed around by the US than Canada at large.
I wonder if CANZUK could provide a third way for Canada, Australia, UK and NZ. But it would require Canada to develop a much better internal transportation system, allowing it to transport aross its own territory and export through it's own ports in a way that can bypass the US. I doubt that Canada has the internal resources to do it, because the land mass is so vast. It would be a long-term project taking decades. The UK and Australia could provide some money, but they are much smaller nations than the US. The City of London is one of the world's financial capitals. I wonder if (post-Brexit) it could be repurposed as a tool for channeling infrastructure investment into Canada and Australia? These would at least be solid long-term investments that would pay dividends in terms of the natural resources that they would allow access to.
CANZUK would at least appear to be a union of equals. The UK, Canada and Australia are roughly equal sized nations in population and economic power. They would need to find an equitable way of sharing power. But that is at least more achievable than it woukd be in NAFTA, where the US absolutely dominates all decisions. Collectively, such a union would offer Canadians dignity at least, even if it could not replace the US as a market. By pooling technology, manufacturing capability, military power and building a common market, we could develop something that would work for all four nations.
The trade routes between these four nations span the globe. Protecting them would require a strong nuclear powered navy. But collectively, we have the technology to do that. The AUKUS agreement could be expanded to include Canada. And we could put nuclear reactors into destroyers, cruisers and aircraft carriers to give them global reach. If the US stands in the way of this technology sharing, then Canada could develop a pressure tube design based on CANDU with funding from the other three partners. This might be a better technology for naval ships anyway, as it allows for more compact fissile cores with lower enriched fuel than conventional PWR designs, as the moderator is cooler and more compact. It is also potentially more compatible with commercial shipping.
I can see plenty of opportunity for CANZUK. But the four nations would probably need conservative governments to make it happen. It is at least something that the Canadian conservatives could offer to Canadians that distances them from the world of MAGA. Trump and MAGA are now a toxic brand in Canada. The conservatives need to be able to offer something new.

How the US engineered British decline.
https://youtu.be/tSQLIKUbGvY
No doubt there were good reasons for abandoning the British Empire. But anyone that has read into UK-US relations will know, the US is a questionable friend to Britain. They wanted Britain and it's colonies, Canada especially, converted into servile vassal states. And they largely succeeded. But the old post war order established by the US is breaking down, not least because the US is no longer able and no longer wishes to pay to maintain it. Canada and Australia are fully developed nations now, with diversified economies. A strong supranational coalition between Canada, UK, Australia and NZ, could do a lot more than the old British empire ever could. We no longer need an imperial trading system, because all of the economies have developed manufacturing economies and established markets.
I would love to see a CANZUK space programme. Canada has established expertise in manufacture of individual components, I.e robotic arms, tied to the US space programme. The UK is arguably Europe's leading satellite manufacturer. Australia is able to offer a launch site and could build ships associated with stage recovery at sea. Being in different hemispheres, the four nations can track and maintain communication with orbital vehicles whereever they are in orbit.
Some GDP figures ($m, IMF):
UK: 4,264,794
Can: 2,507,340
Aus: 2,123,963
NZ: 278,636
Total: 9,174,733m
That is about the same in inflation adjusted terms as the US GDP in the early 1970s. A time that included the moon landings.

Excellent idea. And for decades Canada has identified the need to diversify away from the US. People have been saying this since at least the early 1960s. But instead, trade with the US was too easy. After all, it's the only country connected to Canada by land. Now with Trump, procrastination is no longer an option. Mark Carney is actively establishing trade between Canada and other countries.
First realize where Canada's population lives. Many people in other countries do not understand Canada. Canadians live along the southern border. That's not to be close to the US, it's because it's warm. Canadian winters are cold. It's also about agriculture.

Left is population, right is agriculture. Prairie provinces have a triangle of arable land, extending farther north in Alberta, coming south into Manitoba. Eastern Manitoba has damn near anything but trees. Canadian Shield is a vast area, very geologically stable, but very thin soil. Where there is just inches of soil over bedrock, all that grows is trees. East of Lake Winnipeg, extend south to the US border, is just Canadian Shield. Northern Ontario and northern Quebec is also Canadian Shield. Newfoundland is an island, nicknamed "The Rock". It's also rugged. Labrador is rugged. Newfoundland had a successful economy fishing starting 1497. But over fishing for centuries depleted the fish stock.
Canada built a trans-continental railway in the 1880s to unify the country. Left is the rail network of Canadian Pacific, right is CN (Canadian National Railway). Both have expanded by purchasing rail into the US. But both have rail lines north of the Great Lakes, linking eastern Canada to western.
Highway map: not much in the Canadian Shield, not much around Hudson's Bay, because there's not much there. Trees and rocks. Nunavut territory is mostly tundra; border between Nunavut and Northwest Territory is the tree line. Highway through northern Ontario from border with Manitoba to southern Ontario is... well... undivided, one lane in each direction, speed limit 90km/h. Semi-trucks usually drive that faster than the speed limit. Trans-Canada Highway, aka Highway #1, goes from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic. It's not all the same. North of the Great Lakes, the Trans-Canada Highway splits into 2: Highways #11 and #17. Highway 11 loops farther north, while 17 hugs the northern shore of Lake Superior. I drove that many times in the late 1980s and 1990s. If you want to speed (at least back then) do so when far away from any town. When a sign says there's a small town with 10km, slow to the speed limit. That's where highway police enforce the speed limit. When I was in my 20s and 30s, driving a Pontiac Firebird in summer in sunny conditions with clean dry road, I could drive 120km/h easily. Found semi-trucks drove at least that speed.
My point is Canada does have transportation infrastructure. Provinces tended to trade with the US rather than other provinces. Not sure why. When I talked to provincial politicians from southern Ontario about purchasing electricity from Manitoba, they were arrogant and told me to sell somewhere else. The towns of northwest Ontario between Manitoba and western most point of Lake Superior were complaining of excessive electricity prices. In 2006/'08 northern Ontario had the highest electricity prices in Canada, while Manitoba had the lowest. So obviously people in Ontario close to the Manitoba border wanted to buy electricity from Manitoba. But politicians in Toronto would not let them. Greedy arrogant bastards! But now with Trump, perhaps they'll listen.
::Edit:: Oh, waterways. The United States has the Mississippi River system to transport freight. Canada has the Saint Lawrence Seaway. A system of locks along the St. Lawrence river to allow shipping from the Atlantic to the Great Lakes.

I will try to read your materials.
Keep in mind that this is a storm we ride, and do not rule. Canada can trade with the USA or not. They have a choice. Practicality however, says that certain interactions are worthwhile.
If President Trump says, "Then Canada should be a state", It does not indicate an intention of conquest, he is just saying that if you want to be independent then you have to run your own ship and don't be surprised if we don't always accommodate your every wish.
The roots of all this go back thousands of years and the players, are not who you think they are. I would exhaust myself explaining it all and you would fall asleep while I did the explaining.
As for the Russians, unlike the Latins, they have been assaulted many times. There was a area around St. Petersburg that at one time was developing in parallel to places like western Europe, but the forces from the Eurasian hinterlands has always, made that vulnerable to attack.
The world has split once in very ancient times to produce Greater Europe (Which includes Russia), and India.
The so-called European Colonial period in part has provided a new split, producing the Americas and the South Pacific. Still in progress.
A civilization emerges in the Americas, and you may wonder why there is conflict with the Europeans and the Amerindians.
Being polite with the British Monarchy is practical for us. Their powers can be useful to us or destructive to us. The Promethean Action people speak of "The City of London". Well, I believe that that is the East India Company that has pretended to be "The British Empire".
We don't like them, they do not have any values of decency, and they do not like us to be independent any more than they liked India to be Independent.
So, you see the problem One aspect of the British (At times) has dignity. The Constitutional Monarchy. But the British world wide underworld. Has no love for our values at all, and really has no morals of any sort. It is demonic in nature.
We can ask what is north or south. We tend to call Americans that lived in the "Slave States" as Southerners. But in reality the so called "Whites" are primarily North. It was their slaves that were and are south.
The primary poles of the world are the Kongo, and the Chin. The rest of us ride between them, including anyone remotely Caucasian.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Kongo
It has been the work of the Northern Peoples and also the Church to tame the slave trade. The slave system does not suit us.
When Canadian Leadership aligns with the Democrat party in the USA, they align with the plantation owners, who exploit these people.
And this is the "Time it is". (Again). Similar to previous era's when the empire tries to injure us as to split reality. Similar to the Civil War and the temptation of the Europeans to crave to reconquest in the North American Continent. French in Mexico, and British in Canada.
So, don't be surprised if we react.
In the cycle of time the USA has industrial emergences, such as the one occurring now. This annoys the "Latinoids" who want to rule over plantations of Pions, as the consequence of industrialization produces competitors to power who do not maintain wealth by sucking the life out of Pions.
So, as always the relationship between what is left of the British Empire/East India Company. and the USA is a Frenime situation. Toes do get stepped on.

Trump's demands for a Canadian "trade" deal:
US veto in foreign investment in Canada's infrastructure projects
giving US companies equal access to bid on public infrastructure projects, rather than prioritizing Canadian companies
requiring Canada dismantle Canadian content cultural requirements
roll-back online streaming act which protect Canadian content
removing Quebec's French language protections
shifting automobile assembly back to the US (which according to Lutnick only occurred because we don't have unions???)
removing dairy supply management system
adopt US pesticide and chemical use guidelines
making it more difficult for Canada to access pharmaceutical drugs from non-US companies, which would drive up costs
giving US guaranteed access to Canadian oil, natural gas, nuclear & hydroelectric power
giving US first right of access to and price caps on all of Canada's critical minerals
forcing Canada to purchase US military hardware for our military, particularly in the arctic and NORAD
For all of these the polite response is "NO!" I could get much more rude. All this would make Canada the 51st state in all but name.
To be fair, most Canadians disagree with the online streaming act. But there's no way even a single one of the other provisions could be in the trade deal.
As for unions in auto manufacturing? Canada has unions, they're strong, and have been in auto manufacturing about as long as Canada has manufactured automobiles (cars, trucks, vans, etc).

When Canadian Leadership aligns with the Democrat party in the USA, they align with the plantation owners, who exploit these people.
So there it is. Nothing else says anything. This is strictly partisan politics. The US Republican party has ceased to exist. MAGA is not Republican, but has replaced it. Canada has tried to work with whoever has been elected to be the government of our neighbour and ally, but Trump's MAGA team does not make it possible. I would like to say "easy", but it's more than that. Attempting to take over Canada is major threat. And Trump's team is completely fascist. Read history of the Nazi party in the 1930s, what lead to Hitler becoming Führer. Trump is following the Nazi playbook precisely.
Canada has a Conservative party. In fact, Justin Trudeau screwed up so much that polls showed the Conservative party was a shoe-in. They were not only going to win the 2025 election, the Conservatives would have a majority. But then Trump threatened Canadian sovereignty, and Mark Carney promised to defend Canada against Trump.

Sovereignty is always only partial for everyone. We have to cope with the fact that we are not almighty in ourselves. you learn that as you stop making your parents answer your every baby demands.
What you don't understand is that there are forces that are not mandated by humans.
The British and French on their own are not fit to manage some of those factors. By not becoming North American of some sort, you make yourselves outsiders in your own domain.
The easiest way for America to manage Canada is to treat it as our Canadian Reservation. And then we can do our American stuff and just ask you to stay up there and don't give us trouble.
As for your resources, it will always be more economic for you to sell your excess to us than to transport them to other locations on the globe.
I would not want to try to assimilate a conquered Canada. It is easier to keep it walled off to manage the trouble that emerges from it.
If you want to be a United Canada or several Canadas, I will very much prefer to avoid the trouble of assimilating Canada.
Your programming has been well done by your masters, and that makes you more trouble than it would be worth.
And we actually prefer to do things more cleanly and honorably than brute conquest.
You can continue to be an outsider entity on the North American Continent if you want to.

Thunder Bay looks like an obvious place to turn into a major port for direct Canadian exports from Ontario and perhaps Manitoba. It sits at the head of Lake Superior and appears to be well served by existing rail and road networks. Additional rail way lines could be constructed with termination points at Thunder Bay. The city is already a major port. Western Ontario is a absolutely filled with lakes. So extending the waterways all the way to Winnipeg looks like something that could be done given enough time, money and effort.
For Alberta, I wonder if direct export of bitumen could provide an application for the hydraulic capsule pipeline to the coast of British Columbia. This would be a concrete pipe filled with brine solution. Neutrally buoyant capsules containing solid bitumen would be carried along it at roughly human walking speed. Pumping power would be provided by direct electricity from local renewable energy, so pumping rate would vary. The cannisters would be opened at destination and could then be blended with light crude in a refinery at the coast, to produce syncrude. Or syn-hydrogen could be used to crack the bitumen into a lighter oil. This could then be exported by tanker to refineries in East Asia.

No, it's not nice. The war in Ukraine is not nice. Russia has killed hundreds of thousands, and this DOES affect the US. Russia has explicitly stated they will take all of Ukraine, then force-draft all men age 18-65 who don't have a job in what Russia considers vital infrastructure. Force them to attack Russia's next victim: which will be Ukraine's allies. Any Ukrainian man who refuses will be killed. This isn't an idle threat, they already did it in occupied areas of Ukraine. Once Russia has all of Ukraine, they will take all of eastern Europe, every country that used to be part of the Soviet Union. Plus Poland and Finland, because they used to be conquered and occupied under the Tzars in late 1800s. They will conquer central Europe and install puppet governments. Rape all those countries for resources. Russia is already talking about taking Germany, because East Germany used to be under Soviet domination. If they successfully take Germany, they will take all of Europe to the Strait of Gibraltar. Then they take Alaska. Yes, I said Russia intends to invade Alaska. Russia wants to be the sole world Superpower.
Now you know why Putin has convinced Trump to piss-off every one of America's allies. And anger all of America's trading partners. Once all alliances are gone so no one will come to America's defence. And all America gets poor because no one will trade with America. Then America will not be able to maintain the military it has now. America's overseas military bases will all be closed, because no one will allow America to have a base on their territory. And not just bases. What happens when no one will lend America money? When all countries that hold American treasury bonds demand payment? Printing money currently causes only mild inflation, but once the US dollar is no longer the worlds reserve currency, then even printing a small amount of currency out of nothing will cause dramatic inflation. Without money, the US will not be able to maintain the large military it has now. The US military will have to shrink.
This is the start of World War 2. UK and France have nuclear weapons: strategic nuclear bombs on submarine launched ballistic missiles. When Russia invades France or UK, they will launch. Yes, we're talking global thermonuclear war. That's what Russia started.
And you want to support Russia? You side with the dictatorship that has no freedom of speech? If any Russia holds up a blank piece of paper, they're arrested. Russians who posted complaints about the war on Telegram have already been disappeared. Don't expect their bodies to be found. Yet you claim they are "your" side? World War 3 has already started, and you side with the enemy?

Ukrainska Pravda, a Ukraine news site, July 31 of this year: Zelenskyy: Ukraine has lost around 50,000 troops in the war
Quote: "Sorry, to be honest, I don't want to be very open about it, because the Russians will understand what's going on with our army. We have about 50,000 soldiers killed, and we had about 400,000 wounded. And there is a huge number of [people who have] disappeared."
Details: When the interviewer asked how many Russians have been killed in the war compared to Ukraine, Zelenskyy said that Russia has suffered 1,600,000 losses, including around 700,000 deaths.
