The age of the rover on Mars is drawing to a close.
Space X's Starship make them redundant. Why invest in a small rover when you can have a human-pasenger rover weighing maybe 2 tons under Space X's approach plus several helicopters and a rocket hopper....or just refueld your Starship and it can go visit any numbers of places on Mars.

The optimism of Louis is apparent in his post in 2021.
My guess is that we will see a great increase in machine activity on Mars before the first human shows up.
It seems to me that advances in machine intelligence as well as machine capability in general will allow humans to prepare the landscape for the arrival of humans, so that risks are greatly reduced. This pattern should work for development of all locations in the Solar System where humans might want to venture.
That said, here is a reminder of the optimism that Louis brought to so many of us while he was here.
