Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ...
Just FYI ....
We have two applications for membership.
These new members will be focused upon the educational capabilities of the forum as part of the Mars Society educational activity.
We will be opening with the Cokoino robot project, and evaluating GW Johnson's course on ellipses as precursor to celestial navigation.
I'll be processing the new applications in the next few days.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut .... we have our first new member in quite a while.

I've updated the "newest member" item at the bottom of the Index page.

Thanks for that very nice image in the Google Meeting topic.  The model we are working is a bit different but by the same company.

Ours is CKK0017 (I'm working from memory so hope I got it right).  The arm has six servos and metal arms rather than plastic.

OK... CKK0017 must not be it... here is what Google found:

The CKK0017 by LK COKOINO is a 6-Axis (6-DOF) metal robot arm kit designed for STEM learning and DIY robotics. It is an open-source educational platform that allows beginners and hobbyists to explore mechanics, electronics, and coding.
Core Features
6 Degrees of Freedom (6-DOF): Equipped with 6 high-torque, metal-gear servo motors that replicate the 360-degree, omnidirectional movements of industrial robotic arms.
Dual Control Modes: Features a plug-and-play Joystick Mode (no coding required for basic movements) and a Programming Mode.
Hardware: Built on an aluminum alloy chassis (handling a 300g payload) and is compatible with microcontrollers like the Arduino UNO R3.
Programming: Open-source code (C/C++) via the Arduino IDE for advanced logic and automation tasks.
Tutorials & Resources
Because it is a DIY kit, LK COKOINO provides open-source documentation, drivers, and sample codes. You can download the setup and coding materials directly from the Cokoino CKK0017 GitHub Repository.Educationa...Amazon.comCOKOINO Dynamic Robot Kit for Arduino - GitHubThis tutorial includes usb serial port driver, serial port debugging software, android bluetooth APP, library files, sample driver...GitHubShow all

More information is posted in the Robots topic.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... our new member experimented with special characters in the password and found that several are accepted by the password update feature.

I was not aware of this, and presume that the information will be of interest to present as well as future members.

The only guidance for passwords that I have seen are (is) a message about minimum password length. I got that when I tried a three character password.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #4255

Thanks for the reminder of our intense evaluation of phpbb3 and our decision to stay with FluxBB.

That led to a months long effort to update FluxBB to the 2024 standards, and we are running with those now.

In essence, we assumed responsibility for supporting FluxBB.

I am hoping that kbd512 returns at some point in the future.  He was one of those white collar workers displaced by economic forces, and I hope his recovery is proceeding well.

He spoke of making a major career change, in a direction that has long suited him, so I sure hope that works out.

We are not going to have a password problem because we are not migrating to phpbb3.

On the other hand, we have a ffully functional phpBB3 system available for imagess, and we lack a password to enable pphBB3 to access our MySQL database. This happened when Mars Society dealt with the latest hacker attack by changing passwords.

Our image server was not included in the password change.

I made two requests for that password to be updated, and for whatever reason that has not yet happened.

I am keeping the lifeboat running and you are welcome to log in there any time.

We can use that to store images, but I would like to get the images we already saved in the Mars Society image server back into use.

Thank to you for keeping an eye on things all these years.

Re: Housekeeping

Economics of the 70's through 2000 was all about sending jobs/work which we once did over sea to capture that cheap labor pool in the color categories that fall under pink to under paid. The industries where in shoes, textiles, lumber for paper, electronics in a variety of items, some automotive related replacement parts ect... I am not seeing this trend change anytime soon...

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #4257

This is an interesting prediction. I think you are overly pessimistic, but not for the reason that i first thought of ...

Upon thinking about your statement, it occurred to me we have nothing left to ship overseas.

Can you (or CoPilot for that matter) think of anything that could possibly go overseas at this point?

It seems to me that the only jobs left are ones that require people on site here.

Please take this question seriously, and please try to avoid making a joke of it.

I think you may be overly pessimistic because there may be NO more jobs that can go overseas.

Re: Housekeeping

Research to collaborate the already give in above post.

What the U.S. already offshored (1970s → 2020s)
By the time AI arrived, the U.S. had already moved most low‑margin, labor‑heavy industries overseas:

Clothing & apparel — ~90% imported by 2026.

Electronics assembly — only ~20% domestic retention.

Furniture & home goods — ~75% imported.

Toys, tools, consumer gadgets — overwhelmingly Asia‑based.

Automotive components — partially offshored, though North America retains ~55%.

These shifts were driven by wage differentials, trade liberalization (NAFTA, China PNTR), and corporate incentives to cut labor costs

Most of what could be offshored already has been—especially labor‑intensive manufacturing. What remains vulnerable today are advanced electronics, AI hardware, pharmaceuticals, machine tools, and other “strategic” industries that the U.S. still depends on foreign production for. These sectors are now considered national‑security risks because the U.S. imports so much of them.

The short list of remaining vulnerable sectors are not the old factory jobs—they’re the high‑tech, high‑value industries the U.S. still relies on but does not fully control.

1. Semiconductors & AI hardware
The U.S. imports huge volumes of chips, AI servers, and advanced electronics.
2. Pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs)
Many critical drug ingredients are sourced from a handful of foreign suppliers.
3. Machine tools & industrial equipment
The U.S. machine‑tool industry has lost comparative advantage for 15+ years.
4. Advanced electronics & precision components
Smartphones, laptops, rare‑earth magnets, sensors, and high‑precision parts remain heavily foreign‑sourced.

The twist: AI doesn’t offshore factories—it offshores skills which means lower college entrance and reasons to enter these fields:

Engineering
Design
Software
Legal review
Accounting
Customer support
Data analysis

Because AI reduces the skill barrier, companies can move these tasks to lower‑cost countries even more easily.

This is the new offshoring frontier.

You may not like these answers but corporate greed for profits over peoples living conditions with increased regulations, taxation are not slowing the trend

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut...

Please be careful to show us what you are printing from CoPilot, and what you are writing with your own words.

The best way to do that is to always quote CoPilot, and explicitly state: Quoted from CoPilot.

CoPilot is starting to pick up your language, so it is no longer easy for us to tell when you are speaking and when CoPilot is speaking.

This is the problem that teachers are facing in schools.  The teachers want to read what the students think, and not what CoPilot came up with.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re the words "mission" and "statement"

We've discussed this before, and I don't recall details of the conversation.

This forum appears to have no mission statement, but we are a part of the Mars Society, it it ** does ** have a mission statement.

I asked Search to show me topics with messages that contain both words, and it produced a long list:

Pages:1 2 3 … 11 Next
Index» Search» Topics with posts containing 'mission and statement'

There appear to be 10 pages of topics that qualify.

My guess is that not one of all those topics contains a mission statement for this forum, but sorting through all those topics, let alone posts, is impractical.

I'll create a new topic in Meta.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut...

Thanks for finding the original topic for a mission statement.

The Search tool depends upon a table that contains keywords with links to posts.  If this table is damaged, Search will not work.

That seems to have happened in this case.

Index
» Search
» Topics with posts containing 'mission and statement'

When I run that search I only get the new topic, and not the earlier one that you found.

I wonder if the table for Search needs to be rebuilt?  I don't think we have a utility to perform that operation. Our collection of search terms is built by FluxBB as each post is added to the system, and to my knowledge, once that occurs, nothing further is done with that post.

To rebuild the Search table would be a massive data processing operation.  It would require passing every post and adding key words to the table if they are not present, and adding the post ID as a link to each search term.

A useful non-destructive utility would check every search term against the actual database of posts.  The amount of work to be done is almost the same, but in this case we would generate a list of terms that are not present in the Search tables.

PS ... how did you find that topic?

Thanks for explaining how you found the topic when Search did not show it!  We definitely need to rebuild the Search table. That would be a significant effort, but we depend upon Search to find things or to avoid duplication.

Sorry to hear of the new setbacks and challenges!

AI Bot Controls

New updates to your AI bot controls

Matt Silverlock

VP, Cloudflare

Hi,

About a year ago, we launched "Content Independence Day" and introduced a simple way to block AI bots from scraping your sites without your explicit permission.

Today we're writing to tell you about important upcoming changes to your default AI bot settings that give you more control and flexibility and that take into account your feedback on how you want to manage your traffic and protect your content as the AI landscape evolves.

What’s changing?
Smarter classifications: We’re refining how we categorize AI bots so you can better choose who can access your content.

Updated defaults (September 15): We will adjust our default settings to automatically block certain AI crawlers that do not distinguish their intent.

New controls: You are always in the driver's seat. You can easily customize these settings or opt out entirely to keep things exactly as they are.

If you'd like an early look at the updates or want to learn how to adjust your preferences now, check out our latest blog post.

What do you need to do?

No action is needed today.

However, if you want to opt-out of the new defaults before they go into effect on September 15, 2026, you can opt-out in your Security settings. Refer to our documentation on what controls are available and how they work.

Thank you for being a part of the Cloudflare network and helping us build a better Internet!

Best regards,

The Cloudflare Team

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut...

This is a reminder that I'm hoping we can create a category for "Education" at some point.

If we had a category for Education, one of it's forums could be Mathematics, and topics could be as many branches of mathematics as members might want to add.

Today I realized that I have forgotten what a radian is.  That is ridiculous, but I haven't used that branch of mathematics since high school, and have gotten along with degrees well enough, but now that particular feature is needed for dealing with robot arm movement.

My idea is to secure the education a Mars settler is going to need, and to make it easy to find.

We have several educators and experienced engineers in the group, so this might be a good time to capture some of their hard won knowledge.

In the mean time, Wikipedia has an article that answered some of my questions about radians... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radian

It turns out that radians appear to have been seriously evaluated relative recently ... 1922 was cited as a year when discussion occurred.

The method of measuring angles appears to have value in automation.

For the record, a radian is the angle subtended by an arc on a circle that is equal to the radius of the circle.

A full circle is defined by Pi D or 2 Pi r. 180 degrees is equal to 1 Pi r, and 90 degrees is equal to 1/2 Pi r.

My understanding from reading the Wikipedia article is that radians are more "natural" than other measuring systems, such as the familiar compass points.

I'm not sure how to evaluate that assertion, but apparently lots of people agree with it.

If we had a Category for Education, with a forum for Mathematics, our members who are mathematicians could contribute to a collection of knowledge about radians cast for the Mars Development community.

Re: Housekeeping

making a greater number of categories does not resolve the issue you seem to be having. We do not need Category inflation”...

Medical
NewMars is not a medical forum.
Medical posts are rare, usually hypothetical, Mars‑context, or engineering‑adjacent.
Splitting into “diagnostics”, “treatment”, “biology”, “pharma”, “policy”, etc. would create empty rooms.
Medical discussions naturally belong inside mission planning, habitat engineering, or life support threads.

Education
Education posts are even rarer.
They tend to be meta‑discussions about outreach, STEM, or Mars advocacy.
Creating “K‑12”, “university”, “curriculum”, “teacher resources”, etc. is pure category inflation.
Education belongs inside policy, culture, or general discussion.

Our index has these covered:

Education posts: already covered by existing categories
Youth Group / Educational Outreach
Civilization and Culture
Science, Technology, and Astronomy
Space Policy (for political education topics)
Meta New Mars (for forum‑education or community‑education topics)

“medical” threads almost never behave like medical‑science discussions. They behave like:
political arguments about healthcare
social commentary
ethical debates
Mars‑context hypotheticals (crew health, radiation, life support)

Those map directly to existing lanes:
Not So Free Chat → general political/medical rants
Space Policy → Mars‑relevant political/medical policy
Life Support Systems → engineering‑grade medical‑adjacent topics (radiation, nutrition, physiology)
Science, Technology, and Astronomy → biology/medical science when it’s actually scientific

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #4269

The forum opened as a Discussion forum.  It reached a peak of success with (on the order of) 1000 members.

The era of Discussion is ended.  Only five people remain active, and few are "active".  Only Void remains active in every sense, with new ideas, new topics, additions to old topics, and participation the occasional Chat.

I am trying to lay the ground work for a new era in which the forum serves a different audience.

You are welcome to invite persons who want to do "discussion".  I haven't seen much happening in that arena.

We have a new member who might be interested in an educational focus.  We are still attempting to lay the ground work for how that might unfold.

I can (and will ) work with the existing structure, but in my opinion a "discussion" forum with five members is not something to justify the level of funding we are receiving.

Thanks (again) for thinking about the future of the forum.

And !!! Best wishes for favorable outcomes for all the challenges you are facing, including tree damage, health concerns and legal ones.

Re: Housekeeping

To Thomas-Inclusion of a Human Health in Space Travel would be my interest in many ways. It sort of plays to one of my strengths as a chemist as I was working on a proposal that I was hoping would find some NASA funding for lengthy missions. This was even before I became a member here--but there was no funding through SBIR grants available at the time. I sorta gave up my efforts as a consequence. My final research field as a chemist/biochemist was a deep involvement in peptide chemistry and the biology thereof. I had identified a potential program of hormonal regulation of bone growth and treatment of osteoporosis induced by microgravity.

Re: Housekeeping

Most topics are past casual discussion due to the more engineering type people we have a forum is not an engineering publishing location, If you want reddit channels gibberish same as facebook stuff. We have a method to do category and topic titling that the owner of creation is the one not putting in any effort to guide. Some information is slow going if you never input anything into the topics, while other are broad on purpose to get others thinking. For how the small slice integrate into the total.

The "Human Health in Space Travel" is already in many of the topics contained in the category of "Human missions" so its covered.

copilot wrote:

Peptide chemistry is the study of how amino acids assemble, fold, react, and can be engineered into functional molecules, while peptide biology examines how those molecules operate inside living systems as hormones, signals, antimicrobials, structural elements, or therapeutic agents. The core idea is that peptides sit at the interface between organic chemistry and molecular biology, combining programmable chemical structure with biologically potent function.

The basis of life and how we evolved and how we still live each day.

time scale is why its so disconnected from how any are created

So who wants to talk turkey, is just that a discussion about anything...

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut...

You have a request from one of the few members we have left.

The request was reasonable. We have no place specifically set aside for Human Health in Space.

Whatever we have is buried in topics that may or may not have anything to do with human health in space.

The most logical category for such a forum would be where we already have Human Missions.

But Human Health is NOT something you would intentionally put under Human Missions.

Human Health is NOT a mission.  It is an overarching concern, far above mere "missions".

Here is a snapshot of the Category where it appears to me Human Health in Space might fit.

For OldFart1939.  If you are interested in helping with this discussion, please help us here.  It appears that SpaceNut is holding onto "discussion" but the forum that supported "discussion" has shrunk to five people of whom only one contributes frequently, and those topics are not designed for discussion.

My impression is that most folks who post here are not interested in "discussion". I think that most folks who post here are broadcasting their writings in a free public venue that exists on the Internet and is available to the entire world. As a rule of thumb, I get the impression no one here cares what anyone else thinks.

What kind of discussion is that?  In the early days there are signs folks understood the concept of discussion, and some interesting interactions are available to read in the archive, starting from 2001.

For Oldfart1939 ... are you interested in discussion or education or the accumulation of knowledge, or something else?

I see that there are human problems which impact the feasibility of long duration of human spaceflight--changes in bone mass and density and ocular deterioration due to reduced cardiac output. No astronaut wants to arrive at say--Callisto and have their skeletal system be mush and unable to allow exploration with decent function. The SpaceX and NASA missions have been ignoring the human biology in their planning--unlike Dr. Zubrin.
