EV sales are not growing fast enough and the vehicles are not profitable enough. It would also appear that investment in new power generation, transmission and charging infrastructure is insufficient. Manufacturets are shifting production back to ICE vehicles. This is a problem that we have discussed multiple times on this site. The whole system costs of electric vehicles are not sustainable. In the short to medium term, hybrid vehicles are a more affordable way of reducing fuel consumption.

There's a good argument for hybrid vehicles, or rather, for electric transmission, even without plugging them in. The efficiency losses are AFAIK outweighed by the ability to optimise the engine for power generation. Certainly at the least it would allow for trucks to use petrol, spreading the impact of fuel shortages instead of having a mad scramble for diesel.
