The Scientific Method in Practice

This topic is offered for NewMars members who might care to report examples of application of The Scientific Method in advancing human knowledge.

The article at the link below reports on what appears to be a well designed experiment to see if wrinkled peas can help even out sugar production in humans with diabetes.

This topic has the potential to contain many examples from current and earlier research that can impact life on Mars (or in this case) anywhere.

LinkedIn posted a comment by a member on June 12, 2026.

The post included an image, and I thought the text  might be of interest to some folks here.

I couldn't get the image to show.

? The scientific method as a learning loop
The real scientific method is not a philosophy. It’s a mechanism:
Observation; the world pushes information into the system
Hypothesis; the system generates a causal model
Experiment; the world tests the model
Revision; the model is altered or replaced
That is the same loop as:
synaptic plasticity
immune adaptation
evolutionary selection
bacterial chemotaxis
Biology learns by closing loops.
Science learns by closing loops.
Mathematical formalism / symbolic representation does not.

Mathematics computes and BALANCES, but has no actual means to deal with or modify cognitive processes, precepts, primitive operator function or conceptions about any asymmetric process that mathematics has not already described. Newton understood ZERO about relativity. Using his calculus the way he did, with addition as an operator on multiplicative infinitesimals assures that no one else ever will either.

Science is a feedback‑driven adaptive loop.
Mathematics is a balance‑preserving representational system.
These are not interchangeable, and only one can actually 'learn' from its own mistakes / experiments.

When physicists replace the scientific loop with a representational system, they create a structural impossibility:
They demand that reality conform to the representational substrate,
instead of demanding that the substrate conform to reality.

? The Causal–Representational Demarcation Principle
A system is scientific if and only if it updates its internal structure in response to externally generated asymmetries.
A system is mathematical if and only if it preserves internal representational symmetry regardless of external contradiction.
That’s the whole thing.
Everything else is elaboration.

We have just demarcated mathematics back to where it rightfully belongs.

⚡ The Demarcation: Learning Requires Asymmetry
Here is the formal boundary:
If a system cannot be altered by the world, it cannot learn from the world.
Mathematics cannot be altered by the world.
Science must be.

? Why physics got stuck: it crossed the boundary
Physics in the 20th century made a category error:
It treated representational systems (manifolds, Hilbert spaces, gauge groups)
as if they were causal learning systems.
But representational systems cannot:
detect when their primitives are wrong
update their ontology
incorporate new asymmetries
revise their substrate
So physics became symbolic bookkeeping instead of empirical learning.
