Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #4200

Thank you for elevating a few more of our early members back from banned to InActive.

This is important work, because anyone from those early days would be discouraged if they came back to find themselves "banned".

They would not understand the "banned" state was a consequence of the emergency we faced with 20,000+ spammers infesting our forum.

***
While we work to restore our founding members, we can begin thinking seriously about how we can rebuild the forum.  Mr. Burk has given us a vote of confidence in two ways.  First, he restored our forum when he could easily have let it go.   Second, in an email about the new poster competition, I discovered an interesting title: New Mars Forums Mailer

I don't know if this email was created with that title just for us, or if it went out that way to others.

Either way, I see it as a signal that Mr. Burk still has faith in us.

We need to live up to our potential within the Mars Society structure.

We are currently operating with 3 active Admins, 1 Admin who is unavailable at the moment, and two regular members.

This is a stable situation upon which I believe we can build.

A key player is .... tata !!!! Our Senior Admin.

Are you able to take on the challenges of new members?

As we've discussed, we offer the potential of an online communications resource for Mars Society Chapters.

So far, except for RobertDyck and the gent who asked about a chapter in Alberta, we have no chapter activity that I know of.

We have attempted to reach out to the Mars Society chapter in Houston, but for whatever reason, nothing happened.

For SpaceNut ... Last week you reported a mishap, and a week has gone by.  I hope you're recovering.  It sounded pretty serious.

Best wishes for recovery.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ...

Just FYI .... The User list revealed that one of our members logged in recently (after the outage) but did not post anything.

Perhaps others have done so as well.

We are not seeing responses from members to our request for contact following the recent outage.

Several members were given attention, but for whatever reason the outreach effort failed.

As one example, we noticed that Void was using the same encrypted email service as Calliban, so we cannot send contact emails. The encrypted email service politely notified us that it would not forward email.  Void then changed his email address to one that is not encrypted, but we have not received confirmation that email is working.

I just sent test emails to RGClark. Perhaps we'll have better luck this time.

Re: Housekeeping

For all...

We (forum) are fitted with a special forum to hold images.  This Image Server is back in operation but not yet available for use.  Inquiry ins in progress to see if we can restore that service.

Meanwhile, the "Lifeboat" site is available for image store if there is an immediate need.

Re: Housekeeping

Thanks for the reach out to James for the web I spent a week with no energy at all being exhausted.master actions. I am doing better after the relief of pain for the double cheek landing. Spent this last week following exhaustion with no energy just falling asleep constantly but am now doing better.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #4205

That was a serious setback!  Thanks for news you are recovering, even if the process is slow.

And! Thanks for supporting the outreach.  We are almost back to whatever "normal" is, but the threat environment is still there, and we Admins need to be constantly on the watch and able to respond when necessary.

I remain hopeful we (this forum) can earn a place in the Mars Society structure.  We were a significant asset at one time, but the best of those 20 years are past, and we have an opportunity to meet the needs of the Society to serve a younger membership.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re crossing 239000 ...

Despite the recent outage and resulting setback, the forum seems to be coming back to life ... We just crossed the 239000 milestone.

Void and RobertDyck have been making significant contributions, and RGClark is back asking interesting questions.

Void's report of an article about remarkable advance in wave power collection is worth your time.  It should work for New Hampshire, and the objections from wealthy land owners should be less that is often seen with wind power.  You can play a significant role by bringing this technology to the attention of State leadership.  You would have to overcome the naysayers who exist in some parts of the US.

RobertDyck has embarked upon what looks to be a promising new Large Ship  venture, with serious study of on-ship in-flight food production.

It occurs to me that the right place to prove out these ideas is in LEO, and a major agriculture industry entity would be a logical sponsor of a Large Ship designed for LEO agricultural experimentation.  The ISS experiments are good, and so are the Chinese experiments, but a Large Ship with at least Mars level centripetal force would be a much more productive site for serious work.

The LEO Large Ship could be combined with culinary laboratories.  The food industry might be a partner, along with media interests who are always looking for content that might be of interest to viewers.

For SpaceNut ... things seem almost back to normal.

We only lost one ID ... 238404

Scan is complete through 239000.

The only detail left to finish is the password change for the Image Server.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re RobertDyck report of freezing temperatures ...

RobertDyck Postings for today contains a report of cold temperatures in his city.  I asked Google about cold cities in Canada, and it revealed that RobertDyck's home city holds the record for cold, even though it is so far South in the country itself.

AI Overview
Winnipeg is widely considered the coldest major city in Canada (and North America) due to its population size and extreme winter temperatures, often falling below

(). While smaller, more northern locations like Yellowknife are colder, Winnipeg is the coldest among cities with a population over 700,000.

Key Details on Winnipeg's Cold:
Ranking: Frequently ranked as the coldest city of its size in the world.
Temperatures: January lows often range between  and Wind Chill: It is famous for extreme wind chills that can make it feel as low as
.
Nicknames: Often referred to as "Winterpeg".

AccuWeather

Other Cold Canadian Locations:
Yellowknife, NWT: Generally considered the coldest Canadian city overall.
Eureka, Nunavut: The coldest weather station in Canada (annual average).
Whitehorse, Yukon: Another extremely cold northern city.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ....

First, thank you (again) for suggesting the Julian data format for the Daily Calendar update.

I used it today to find the first day of Year 38.  The search worked perfectly, once I remembered the correct category.

Second ... hoping your family remembrances went smoothly.

Third ... hoping you can drop by on Sunday.

kbd512 may miss the meeting due to family activities.  GW Johnson ** should ** be able to attend.

I'm looking forward to showing a little bit about the 3D printer that can print aircraft wing ribs.

It looks as though the basic printer can print ribs for the Cessna 150.

GW Johnson tells me his uncle made ribs for an airplane out of plywood, back in the day.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re day counts .... I've noticed that some Earth calendars include the year-day-count.  Most do not.

The big calendar I use for planning has this format: ###/%%%

### is the day count for today
%%% is the count of days left in the year.

I have no idea why the calendar printers set up that combination, except that the customer base may be businesses.

Police Department have finally finish the investigation stage and are submitting the case to the prosecutor. With additional people that looks like a state AG level for a class action as well possible.

For SpaceNut re #4213 and update in Starship topic...

First! Thanks for that detailed and informative list of changes in Starship and Superheavy, the launch pad and in flight procedures.

That detail about the fuel supply pipe the same diameter as Falcon 9 body caught my eye!

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ....

First, I hope things are going well, or at least going ....

This post is about some work that GW Johnson did recently. I'd like to publish that work as though we were a magazine.

This specific material would fit in Infrastructure Category.

What I'm hoping we can create is a layer under Infrastructure that can hold topics.

I'm not sure what the correct name for that layer is in FluxBB. It might be "forum"

In the Category of Infrastructure, we currently have these names:

Single Stage To Orbit
Fully Reusable Two Stage to Orbit (FR-TSTO)
Large ships
Exploration to Settlement Creation
Business Proposals
Home improvements

The new forum would have the title: Essential Skills
This forum would be dedicated to very specific skills that Mars settlers are going to need.
This would NOT be a discussion forum, but instead a repository of knowledge.

Let's discuss this idea, to see if it fits with your vision for the NewMars forum.

Update: the correspondence is saved under: 5/17/26, 10:14

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ....

Regarding the future of this forum ....

I picked up a hint from LinkedIn today .... Please take a look at my report:
https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.ph … 89#p239389

Interestingly, the entire Mars enterprise is a large scale version of the key concept from that post ...

We (Mars Society in particular) are attempting to create a world where humans would want to spend time.

The NewMars forums is (presumably) in the business of creating an online "world" where humans would want to spend some time.

It occurs to me to ask ... what are the features of an environment that are attractive to humans ...?

This forum offers read-only experiences, and there may be folks who take advantage of that.  Magazine and book publishers depend upon folks who are content to read what others have written and published.

The forum offers opportunities for members to publish short pieces.

Negative feedback would tend to reduce the flow of content from members.

Those who deliver negative feedback may derive some psychological benefit from that activity.

It seems to me the forum does not benefit from negative feedback that drives content creators away.

Full circle:

Those employees who will be earning hundreds of thousands of dollars will ** surely ** have good judgement about content management.

The folks who publish here must derive some benefit from each post.

The dilemma for the group is that some posts cause other members to experience disappointment, and enough of ** that ** can lead to non-participation.

But there is ** another ** factor at work in an online community.  If a person creates a presentation on a new idea, it may be read but we have no way of knowing unless someone creates a post.  When we were upgrading our software in 2024, we added a hook for a like button, but we've never gone back to wire that feature into place.  That is a small change that we could make to try to improve the environment for the members of the community who publish.

Thanks for taking a look at that, and for showing our readers some of the photographs.

I thought it was pretty gutsy for an editor at the New Yorker to tackle this project.
