Re: Celestial Navigation - Apollo history - Solar System flights

This post contains a message posted on LinkedIn.  It is a summary of gravitational pathways that are likely to be used frequently for inter-solar system shipments, just as they are already for exploration.

Astronomers have discovered what are often called “cosmic superhighways,” a network of natural gravitational pathways that can allow objects to travel through the solar system using far less energy than traditional routes. These pathways are based on a concept in physics known as the Interplanetary Transport Network, which forms due to the complex gravitational interactions between the Sun and planets. Instead of moving in straight lines, spacecraft can follow these invisible routes, effectively “surfing” along regions where gravitational forces balance in a way that gently pulls them from one place to another. While these routes are not necessarily the fastest in terms of time, they are extremely fuel-efficient, making them valuable for long-term space missions and satellite movement. Space agencies have already used similar principles in missions like Genesis mission, demonstrating how spacecraft can navigate these gravitational corridors. In the future, understanding and improving the use of these cosmic pathways could revolutionize space travel, potentially enabling more sustainable exploration of distant planets, moons, and even beyond our solar system.

My interpretation is that this is a layperson's understanding of the gravity assist phenomenon. The value I see in this summary is the scope of application it reveals to the reader.  In the audience on LinkedIn, it seems to me likely there will be some for whom these are new ideas.
