Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... thanks for the reminder that we have an entire Category (or Forum?) devoted to MDRS.  I created the new topic because I did not find a topic with MDRS included.  Apparently the search does not operate at the Category or Forum level.

Interesting!

For SpaceNut re 3D printing ... https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.ph … 88#p233988

Your points about materials used for rocket components are helpful.  I wonder if anything similar is done with 3D printed metal rockets.  I understand that Rocket Labs is using 3D printed rocket engines, and other companies may be experimenting the the technology.  An entire engine might be subjected to heat treatment after the 3D printing is complete. This is an opportunity for us to add knowledge to the forum, if anyone has the time to investigate and report back.

For SpaceNut re note to offtherock about the new file storage system.  https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.ph … 89#p233989

As a reminder, you too have the ability to store documents in phpBB3 and to link them to this forum.  You've linked so many  images over the years, you sure don't seem to need another storage location, but if you want to use it you are welcome. The detail offtherock and I are discussing is how to allow the images to appear on our NewMars site as actual images, instead of links. At present, I am limited to showing links, because the phpBB3 system was not designed to allow 3rd party access to image files.  According to Gemini, it appears that a file called htaccess can be adjusted in the phpBB3 system to allow calls from our NewMars.com/forums to access the original image files.

For SpaceNut re post about Starship....https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=233990#p233990

Your observations about the burnt-to-a-crisp look of the Starship just before "landing" reminder me of something we haven't seen discussed before.  Those ships are going to stink when they land on drone ship or on-land towers.

Passengers will want to enter airtight corridors to avoid become aromatic with burnt-heatshield vapors.

Re: Housekeeping

I just wrote a detailed procedure for saving an image file on the phpBB3 test site.

Procedure to post an image on NewMars phpBB3 test site:

Here is the link to log in: http://40.75.112.55/phpBB3/ucp.php?mode=login

When you click that link, you should see Login

Below that should be Username

Below that should be Password

If those fields appear, just enter your user name exactly as you do for NewMars.

Enter the same password.

After you submit those values, you should be logged in.

In my case, when I logged in just now, Active Topics appeared.

If Active Topics does NOT appear, look at the upper left for "Quick Links" and click Active Topics

There should be three Active Topics. One is Images for FluxBB. Click on that.

The topic should appear. Click on Post Reply (printed in red below "Images for FluxBB"

Here is where the new procedure comes in:

Look under the edit window... You should see a tab that says "Attachments" Click that...

Click [Add files] (or you can just drag an image into the window)

For this demonstration I chose thrust coefficient forms from my collection of images

Click [Open] in the upper right corner

Here is the tricky part... look below the Attachments tab... you should see your image listed in a box under FILENAME

To the right of the name of your file should be a button that says [Place inline]   Click that

Now you should see some text in the edit window.  Click [Submit] below the edit window.

Your image should appear!

Now you are on the home stretch, but I'll save that for this evening's meeting.

Please let me know if this step-by-step procedure helps.  I would print it if I were doing this for the first time.

I am looking at "primitive variable thrust equation for rockets:"

If anyone tries this and either succeeds or hits a snag, please report here.

Re: Housekeeping

I just check the list of Banned and these are the unconverted accounts that remain. such as username Ufo_man is now testun1 as I need to find where it was left off at.
I was first removed from the banned list then the username was updated in the profile and set to inactive.
The old account shows 3 posts and while can set the post counter to 0 we might delete topics if they hold the first post if not removed so that the remaining discusion stays.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut .... thanks for your post #3829 about converting accounts from banned to inactive.

Please hold off on manually doing that work.  If kbd512 can find the time, he can perform an MySQL command to make that change in a few seconds.

Let's see if kbd512 had time to look at that last week.  He's been extremely busy with family and work so may not have had time.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... re #3831 ...

kbd512 has been extremely busy in recent times, so our request to reset the member status from banned to inactive has been a lower priority. However, kbd512 will try to slot some time for the request.  Please continue holding off on the manual procedure for a bit longer.

In other news... thanks (again) for the hint about how FluxBB might have been able to host images at one time. That hint was enough to inspire an investigation to see if our phpBB3 Test site might be able to store images, and indeed, it turns out the site can!!  Yesterday we saw the first instance of GW Johnson completing the (non-trivial) sequence of steps needed to deliver an image to Void.

That image may be of interest to others as well.  It shows a summary of various trajectories for rockets.

I'll continue investigating to see if we might be able to deliver images directly, but this link method is clearly working.  I am glad to see the phpBB3 Test site coming into active use.

In the long run, I would like to see this capability added to the FluxBB site, with suitable safeguards to keep computer virus out of the contributions.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re login to NewMars test system.

Thanks for letting me know of the problem.

I'll reset your password and send the new password to you via email.

I regret that the email subsystem does not work, but I never learned how to set that up.

Update ... the password is changed. I'll send the new value to your email shortly.

Later update re http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 37#p234037

SpaceNut .... you can ask the AI to format in BBCode!  I've had some success with that.  You do have to tell the AI that our forum has a limited sub set of BBCode to work with.  For example 'h' is used for header to give large font, but there are no parameters. Also, if you use header, color has to be inside.

For the record, here is your login history at the NewMars test site:

    Thu Apr 11, 2024 12:07 am    Sun May 26, 2024 10:59 pm

It's amazing to me that we were working on the FluxBB upgrade so long ago.

Thanks again for your support during that challenging time.

This is a good time to thank kbd512 for his skillful handling of the Webmaster duties that allowed the new software to flow smoothly into the Mars Society web site.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... I just created a new topic for members to work on the "Three Sisters" triplet launcher that turns out to have been studied in considerable detail in the 1960's, when Shuttle was under consideration.

If you can find some images to decorate the new topic, that would help our readers to understand the idea and how it might be reconsidered today in light of new materials and decades of experience.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ....

GW Johnson just wrote an email about the work he is doing to try to design various kinds of rocket systems.

In thinking about the space plane triple-launch concept, he wrote this:

Possibly a realistic inert fraction might be that of the X-37B,  if we can find the data.  Or Dreamchaser.  Or both.  The X-20 would be too old a technology.  So would the X-15.

If you have some time, please see if you can find information about either of the modern space planes.  The X-37B is actually flying (of course) and Dream Chaser is in testing to meet NASA requirements.

it may not be possible to find figures for a classified USAF program, and it may not be possible to find figures for a proprietary space plane design.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Post #3840

First, congratulations on mastering the new file save and show image feature of the NewMars test site!

Second, thanks for this impressive image of the house wrapped in Tyvek!  It will be fun to see the transformation as you have time to upload images!  We have plenty of room in the Azure site, so we may be lucky enough to see more of the many improvements you made and are planning.

Third, regarding the image GW shows us of the landing Starship, I was intrigued by your uncertainty about the side you were looking at.

As a submariner, you will recognize the terms Port and Starboard.  That image shows the keel with plenty of burn sites, and the Port side of the ship.

That said, if Elon and company had another camera on station in the Indian ocean, we may get to see the Starboard side.

I think we are lucky to have ** one ** drone on station.  That was a precision landing!

My only question is why they didn't just hover until the fuel burned out. Then the ship might have floated instead of exploding. But perhaps the steam from the extremely hot engines would have blown the ship apart anyway.

Update... I didn't realize you'd uploaded the earlier image of the house with the walls gone entirely.!! Wow!! What a project!

Still, it looks as though you're making progress.  The boys must be on site in the mobile these days!  I trust they've been able to help a little but, when they can.
