Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut .... thanks for helping out here in the forum, despite being so busy with the home remodel!

And ** thanks ** for remembering the early attempt at creating tags for worthwhile posts by NewMars members.

During the weekly Google Meeting, kbd512 and I discussed my proposal for a new Category for bookmarks.  No decision was made, and I am delighted to see you have taken a moment to create Post #3775, with all those details about what bookmarks are and how to use them.

I'd appreciate your thinking about the Bookmark Category.  Don't do anything.  I'd like to have all the Mods and Admins in agreement with the idea.

The advantage I see is that we can select the new Bookmark Category when we enter a search, so the Search Engine won't have to deal with the entire 20+ years of archived posts.

If you'd like to experiment, we have a new Bookmark topic in Meta.

Re: Housekeeping

This post is for the Admins ...

Calliban may be interested in working on design of habitats at the level of an architect...

We have members who have described habitats at a high level, and RobertDyck in particular has participated in and reported on design of a Mars habitat which was a good example of what a well developed architecture might look like.  It seems to be that the design RobertDyck showed us could be built by a construction company without a lot of additional adjustments by the architects.

My proposal to you today is that we might add a new Forum for Habitats to our existing Infrastructure Category.

Here they are as of July 22, 2025:

This forum is dedicated to development of the ideas and technologies that need to be combined to create practical Single Stage To Orbit / SSTO launch vehicles.

The new Forum might have a title like "Habitat Design and Architecture"

A recently published post by Void showed a toroid around an asteroid.

Other examples might include the Stanford Torus and the O'Neill cylinders.

Let's not do anything ... instead, let's try to arrive at consensus of the Admins.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ...

In following up on Calliban's observation that the topic Void introduced was of scientific interest, and not intended to titillate readers as the wording of the topic implied, I have learned a bit more about options.

One of the options that popped up was a forum that is not visible to the public.

You have (in fact) created exactly such a forum.  I don't remember now which one it is, but the fact it exists is proof that we might consider creating a private/hidden forum that Void could use to post taboo subjects (always assuming they are for scientific purposes and not intended to titillate his readers).  That way, he could advertise the taboo content in the open forum without specifying the exact nature of the content.

A concern I have is that since we want to attract young people (not yet adults) to the forum, the presence of such a forum would be a potential obstacle to securing parental approval for forum membership.

Let's think about this.  There might be an answer, such as creating a special member category for young people with parental permission.

Re: Housekeeping

Its not that the topic is taboo it was more of how it got presented in that the content bordered the red line of the rulles.

Naturally sex and the broad topic of furthering the species is a part of any mixed crew staying here as well as for Mars. It also must refraim from crossing the boundaries that have been set.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #3779

Thank you for your comment about the interesting topic we were given to consider recently.

So what do you think of providing a Category (or Forum ?) which is not visible to Guests?

You set up such a forum for projects (as I recall)  .... Would it make sense to provide such a forum for our members?

The entire chat section might go in there, for example.

It is unlikely anyone writing to Chat wants the world to see the content.

I think most members are concentrating on their message and not thinking all that much about the audience.

The weekend is coming up! I hope your remodel is coming along!

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... thanks for thinking about the idea!

FYI... I just ran the pothole scan and we only had one this time:

Today's run was flawless.  The Internet was smooth as glass.

Elapsed time for 1000 posts was 8 hours and 24 minutes

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut...

Before we upgraded our forum software, we used to get Internal Server Errors on a regular basis.

Today, as I was logging out of a bank, I got the same error.

Internal Server Error
The requested URL was resulted in an Error. Click here to go <bank name>

You can also find information related to Home Lending, Commercial Banking Services, <bank> Premier Platinum, Credit Card and Auto Loans from this site.

Thank you for visiting <bank>

It's a good time to remember all the time and effort you and kbd512 put into making that upgrade happen.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re use of our forum to find employees....

https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.ph … 61#p233061

I'd appreciate your thinking about the opportunity we have to help PhotonBytes and his associates to find employees for an enterprise.

It seems to me that the mission of the forum includes such activity, but I'd appreciate your thinking about it.

The next opportunity to consider the matter will be Sunday evening in our regularly scheduled Google Meeting.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #3785...

OK ... you thought about it....

I'll give you that.

Now please think about the specific question I am asking....  Do you mind if PhotonBytes places contact information for job opportunities in his posts on the forum?

I've granted permission for him to do that, pending discussion with the Admins and Mods.

When you have time, please catalog the new active members we have gained since starting the Recruiting topic.

I think the grand total is one: PhotonBytes.

Steve Stewart was active for a while, but his last post was in 2023.

I'd like to invite everyone to think about what it takes to create an environment that would be attractive to folks who are enrolled in college with a career in space related activity in mind, or professionals out in active careers who might find something of value in what this forum offers.

Re: Housekeeping

Those that did come here from the start of the topic came here for other reasons and not for the Forum or for Mars society but rather than for its all about "ME" rather than what the website provides.

To do more means we are outside of the scope of the forums website being hosted as a point of discusion for Mars Society for the obviuos.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re GW's patent....

You may not have had time to read the text .... this is NOT a rotating drum.

Artificial gravity is not involved. This system works in zero G.

If you can find the time, try to find the write up on the system.

Thanks for your reflections on the history of membership.  It seems to me the forum can serve a variety of needs.

The one I am most interested in is how we (admins and members) can help each other to achieve success in a space related career.

Re: Housekeeping

The centripical force by moving the fuel with the paddles creates AG on the working fluid forcing it to the wall of the tank. As soon as boil off is created the gas will make the fluid start to increase with each push of it with the paddes.

The apollo had a tank rupture by a much smaller tank stiring.

Re: Housekeeping

Hi SpaceNut ...

Thanks for bringing back those topics about washing machines.  That topic was interesting.  RobertDyck was in fine form, and Terraformer contributed a post or two.  kbd512 and GW Johnson were in the mix.  I came away not convinced anyone had solved the problem but where were lots of interesting ideas.  The one that caught my eye was drying clothing in vacuum. The loss of water and air might detract from the value of that solution, but it sure seems likely it would work. On the other hand, the water might just freeze solid, so the clothing might not come back through the air lock.

On balance, GW seemed to have the best solution, of creating artificial gravity and just using established methods, as RobertDyck's solution seemed to be suggesting.

***
Regarding your idea that propelling fuel against the side of the tank produces artificial gravity....

Please think about that some more.  It seems to me you are stretching the meaning of the words "artificial gravity" a bit beyond the usual understanding of the term.  The tank is not moving. The vanes and the liquid are moving.  When the liquid hits the wall it will experience a force pushing against it's motion. That is the opposite of gravity. Gravity pulls, and so does artificial gravity.  The "pull" of artificial gravity is acceleration as the environment follows a curved path.  it seems to me the liquid in the tank is experiencing ONLY "push" forces.
