Restaurant technology is evolving on Earth. It has remained the same for decades.
Yesterday I was brought forcefully into the modern digital age, when relatives took me to a state-of-the-art restaurant.
My idea of how a restaurant displays it's offerings is a printed menu. These would have been a technical advance in their day. Prior art was a slab with a chalk menu, or a constant menu painted on wood.
I was startled to find that the menu is now accessible via QR code from a sign in the middle of the table.
Patrons are expected to have smart phones, and to be able to call up the menu. Fortunately, I had used a computer to make my selections from the hundreds of items on the menu, so I was able to place my order. Most of the attendees were able to call up the menu. One guest asked for and received an iPad set up to display the menu.
I bring this up because restaurants on Mars are likely to avoid the expense of printed paper menus, and the digital system I saw yesterday is quite effective. The wait person used an electronic device to scan the credit card, and the receipt was emailed to the patron.
This particular restaurant was one that I think RobertDyck would approve. It offered a vast array of fresh vegetable, fruit and other plant materials, with plenty of other options for those who wanted them.

It is building complexity and failure modes into applications that really don't need it. It presupposes that you have an electronic device with you, that it is charged and working, that software problems don't screw it up. In other words, it is a bad idea. Much better simply to write the menu up on the wall, or print it and stick it to the wall. If the menu can be conveyed using chalk written on a slab of stone, then that is the best solution. The resources involved are miniscule. The simplest solution is almost always the best. There is an aesthetic elegance to it as well.

"Plan and prepare for every possibility, and you will never act. It is nobler to have courage as we stumble into half the things we fear than to analyse every possible obstacle and begin nothing. Great things are achieved by embracing great dangers."
