Recently (June of 2025) kbd512 has brought a travel concept of NASA back into view with a modification. The original design featured a Baton (GW Johnson's term) style artificial gravity system, and it appears to have planned for each habitat module to house multiple humans.
kbd512's modification would place two counter-rotating batons on the same ship, to improve stability of the vessel for navigation.
kbd512's design has an interesting option:
If the crew is set at four persons, then each person could occupy a habitat at the end of one of the batons.
While the travelers would not be completely isolated from each other, visits between habitat modules would probably be rare, due to the complexity of movement between the habitats. The crew would be in constant communication via electronic devices.
The ** true ** isolation would be of the crew from the Planet Earth.
A trip to Mars would take a minimum of two years and it might take longer depending upon many factors outside the scope of this topic.
This topic is offered for NewMars members who might wish to contribute links, images or text to build up a collection to help future planners or travelers to plan such a voyage.
An image of a ship designed according to kbd512's adaptation of the NASA design was provided by GW Johnson in June of 2025.
