Hi all.
I have a simple invention on how humanity could protect itself from asteroids, threatening to fall on Earth. I sent it to NASA's twitter, got a few likes, and it would probably be a good idea to discuss it on this forum. I understand that it might not have come to my mind alone, but I have never seen such a method before.
The essence of this invention is, that asteroids can be shot down by nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles, almost the same ones which are currently on combat duty. In flight, an intercontinental missile ascends to an altitude of several thousand kilometers, and therefore, if the guidance systems and the nuclear warhead are properly improved, the same missile that is used to destroy ground targets can be used to destroy asteroids. Moreover, if the missile is modified so that its nuclear warhead can destroy targets in outer space, then the same missile can also be used to destroy enemy ballistic missiles, or rather their warheads in the out-of-atmosphere part of their trajectory. Thus, if a certain number of nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles are made so that they are universal, that is, they can destroy both space and ground targets, then this will significantly increase the defense capability of the country that operates these missiles, and will also provide the ability to protect the Earth from asteroids, which will provide political advantages.
To destroy asteroids, as well as other space targets such as enemy attack warheads, this universal nuclear missile need to carry only one warhead, but with increased power, about 10 megatons. This will allow us to destroy the asteroid more reliably, as well as reliably destroy space targets, such as enemy warheads, which do not even need to be hit precisely, since the radius of destruction of a nuclear explosion in space will be quite big. On Earth, in the event of a ground target being hit, one such powerful warhead is enough to destroy an entire city (of course, we are against such a development, we would like to protect the Earth from asteroids, but life shows that some bloody maniacs, for example Vladimir Putin, cannot be deterred by anything else).
If the asteroid is too large, and one powerful nuclear warhead is not enough to neutralize it, several missiles can be launched, gradually splitting the asteroid into smaller and smaller fragments until they become significantly less dangerous. This method could be useful.
And one more thing. Since I am writing from Ukraine, and our nation is currently fighting a war for the very existence of our nation, I cannot help but also make a proposal to try to somehow negotiate with the United States so that Ukraine receives the right to develop such universal nuclear missiles, and after they are developed, to put a certain number of such missiles into service here in Ukraine as well, under our command. These missiles could guarantee peace, because otherwise, without nuclear deterrence, Russia would systematically destroy our people in an infantry war of attrition, without regard for any of its own losses. If these missiles, invented by me, could protect the Earth from asteroids, then it would be quite fair if they would also protect my nation, Ukraine, from Moscow's genocide. Ukraine has all the necessary technologies to create such missiles, for example, at the Yuzhmash plant. The Budapest Memorandum was violated by Moscow so bloodily, that the United States would better allow Ukraine to make nuclear weapons for self defense, than to face the uncontrolled proliferation of nuclear weapons, on this shocking example "Ukraine disarmed, and look what happened to it".

Welcome back to Yuri Pilipishin! I went back over your posts and was pleased to see how multiple members interacted with you over several years.
Much has changed since you were last here. I am happy to see that your ID somehow survived the processes that followed SpaceNut's decision to close off open registration due to the onslaught of hackers. It took a couple of years to clean up the mess, and many perfectly fine members got caught in the processes.
An opportunity to capture an entire modest sized asteroid is on the table right now. 2024 YR4 will be back in 2028 and again in 2032. If you can mount an expedition to reach the asteroid in 2028, you and your company can harvest the asteroid on it's flight back around, and deliver the collected materials to LEO in 2032.
We don't need to destroy the asteroid. We need to collect it into manageable chunks, and deliver those chunks to LEO for further processing.

Many Americans are supporting your efforts to re-establish your independence and sovereignty, while a few do not.
Best wishes for survival during the current period, and prosperity afterward.

I am glad that I am remembered on this forum, and that my account has remained relevant. During this time, I sometimes visited this site, to see what's new, but I had only lurked.
Asteroid 2024YR4 was discovered on 12/27/2024, and the probable date of its collision with the Earth was 01/28/2025. This means that all currently imaginable projects for deflecting this asteroid from the trajectory of collision with Earth would be irrelevant. Even if the apparatus designed to deflect the asteroid was at the launch pad on 12/27/2024, it would not have time to deflect the asteroid. The task of transferring asteroids to near-Earth orbit is much more complex, and requires significantly greater financial costs, as well as significantly more advanced technologies than the simple military method of destroying asteroids that I propose.
What I propose can be implemented entirely on the basis of existing technologies, and protect the Earth much more reliably. To deflect an asteroid from its trajectory and transfer it to a near - Earth orbit, we need space technologies that humanity does not yet have, all of these are theoretical projects, in practice this requires technologies that are much more advanced than those required for a flight to Mars and back. But most importantly, you never know what other asteroid might suddenly appear out of the darkness, threatening the Earth and leaving very little time to react. Therefore, the system of protecting the Earth that I propose still seems relevant.
And also, regarding suddenly appearing asteroids. I was told that extraterrestrials (if they existed) could threaten Earth cities with destruction by simply transferring asteroids from afar into orbits that lead to collision, and thus keep Earth's intelligence services, who know about them, in fear, and thereby forbid them from even telling humanity about their existence. "If you serve the aliens, you will be given gold from a golden asteroid, and if you resist the aliens, you will be killed by a rocky asteroid." Of course, this is more of a conspiracy theory, but if you imagine such a scenario as a real possibility, then the invention I propose would not only increase our defense capability, but would also protect the sovereignty of the Earth from extraterrestrials.

Hi Yuri!
Thanks for your reply!

I'm trying to help you (and others) get away from the scary blow-things-up scenario with which we are so familiar.
Please consider harvesting our celestial visitors. Think of a flock of bees harvesting blossoms in an orchard. (I don't know if bees fly in flocks).
What I have in mind is a great number of small vehicles designed to harvest small amounts of each asteroid, until there is nothing left. Of course, each collected bundle of asteroid stuff needs to be returned to the "nest" which can be in LEO. There is no need for there to be a great hurry for the return. Solar sailing would work just fine.
I'd like to see the great intellect of this forum harnessed in such useful ways, instead of constantly beating that old blow-things-up drum.
That is partly what the Optical Plane space vessel is about. It has many uses, including space tug, passenger transport and others. But harvesting asteroids is the one that I think will pay back the investors for the huge sums required.
