This topic is offered for the more technically minded of our NewMars membership.
It is inspired by an interaction between Void and Calliban, about conditions near a Red Dwarf star
Calliban had ** just ** described potential living opportunities for humans on a planet deep in the gravity well of a Red Dwarf, and he had concluded the post with the observation location would be so deep in the gravity well that departure from the planet would be difficult.
Almost immediately (in NewMars time) Void pointed out that the Solar Sailing opportunities would be significant, so that the deep gravity well might be overcome by the constant flow of matter and energy from the Red Dwarf.
The same might be true here in the Solar System, where Mercury has location and resources that might be valuable for humans in coming centuries, and solar energy flows with vigor past the planet.
This topic is available for those who may wish to study and report on the potential of solar sailing in these special circumstances.
