Re: NSS Houston Chapter Events

Here is a follow up to the meeting at North Houston NSS yesterday:

https://www.northhoustonspace.org/2024/ … f-meeting/

The link to a video is at the bottom of the page.

The presentation by Dr. Greg Stanley was excellent as always, and the history of rocketry was very well done.  The presenter is the son of one of the scientists collected by Operation Paperclip, with the difference that (apparently) the father was collected by the Soviet Union first. How he got out of Russia is included in the presentation.

Throughout his career, Flores has worked alongside and trained astronauts, lawyers, doctors, educators, politicians, and top executives, while also lecturing at various universities.

About the Meeting
Meetings are open to all age groups and interest levels. Come explore with us the potential that developing and exploring space has to better life here on earth and to open up new frontiers creating new perspectives that can help enrich the human experience.

The Vision of NSS is people living and working in thriving communities beyond the Earth, and the use of the vast resources of space for the dramatic betterment of humanity.

The Mission of NSS is to promote social, economic, technological, and political change in order to expand civilization beyond Earth, to settle space and to use the resulting resources to build a hopeful and prosperous future for humanity. Accordingly, we support steps toward this goal, including human spaceflight, commercial space development, space exploration, space applications, space resource utilization, robotic precursors, defense against asteroids, relevant science, and space settlement oriented education.

Here is a transcript of a question asked of the presenter on Solar Spots...

what is the energy range of protons?

Excellent space weather presentation, Dr. Williams.

Hi Robin,

For the SEP's they can be up to several GeV but mostly in the MeV range. During a geomagnetic storm (a day later, caused by a CME) the particles may not be quite up to the GeV range (generally keV to MeV) but they're more intense and longer lasting.

Those killer electrons for example, can get up to 20 MeV in the Van Allen belt, which can pose a hazard for particularly satellites in geosynchronous orbit, since they basically live in the belt! (The belt is a region of increased electron flux between 3-10 earth radii altitude, whereas geosynchronous orbit is right in the middle, around 6 earth radii). So any process that energizes the electrons in this belt (i.e. geomagnetic storms) can be dangerous for them.

Topic: absurd demands by EPA and FAA

<> fine for spilling liquid oxygen at launch site
<> fine for Starship deluge system that uses drinking water
An audience member explained that the problem is not the purity of the water. It is the temperature of the water.  Will it hurt marine life?
<> fine for changing launch control center
<> fine for using a new storage tank for launch

*** I will note that the on site audience really go worked up by those complains.
