I was looking around on the Mars Society webpage and wanted to know what you find in the "members only" section. The suspense is killing me.

I hate to disappoint you guys, but I highly suspect that there's nothing there. There used to be a members-only messageboard there, which has since transformed into the forums you are reading. I can't be absolutely sure of this because I've forgetten my membership number (I am still a member, of course!) but I can find out what's behind there if you want to know.

And a second thing - Join the Mars Society! We really do spend our money on decent stuff, like the Mars Analogue Research Stations. They do a lot of good for the small amounts of money they require (publicity, reputation, science, engineering, etc).

I think Adrian's right. I'm a fully-fledged Mars Society member and they gave me an access PIN for the "members only" section.
I was breathless with anticipation as I attempted to access the site ... imagining all sorts of risque diagrams of sex in zero-g on the way to Mars!! (Yeah, right ... ! ) And I could only speculate as to what could be achieved in 0.38g on Mars!
And what happened ... ? I couldn't gain access!
I even emailed Maggie Zubrin for help but received no response. Quelle bummer!! ... as the French might say!
But, putting aside my frustration re. "that site", I second what Adrian says: Join The Mars Society today!!! Unless you put your money where your exploration desires lie, you are as nothing! You don't register on the politicians' scopes and you don't really count!!
DO IT TODAY!!!!! (Or I'll be forced to send the heavies around to "talk to you").

Hmm, what would sex be like in 0g? Might be hard because all of that thrusting, pushing, slapping, etc would send your partner floating off away from you, you'd have to keep pulling them back. I imagine you'd have to make creative use of the walls. Maybe the Mars Society should make a cheesy video demonstrating the possibilities of sex in space to make money. They could suspend some porn stars by strings to emulate zero G. The Mars Society porn division could probably make enough money to go to Mars on its own not to mention all those glamour and popular culture mags would inadvertently advertise our cause when they pick up on these new ventures by the Mars Society. Nothing sells like sex!

What's there? In a nutshell, not much. Just a plain green page that reads "Under Contruction," with a few links to things like Edit Member Info, Mailing Lists (those might be interesting, although I'd never have the time to keep up with them..lol), and also the contents of the Founding Convention of the Mars Society, its mission, purpose, etc. Pretty exciting, huh?

I joined only because I'm planning to go to this year's Convention (if Colorado doesn't burn down first ??? ), but I would encourage all of you to join just to support the "Cause." I know $50 is not worth just to see what's in the Members Only section, but I would have to say that the Mars Society is extremely efficient with the money they do receive from dues and donations...just look of all the valuable research they've acomplished so far...one thing I can say is: NASA, you'd better watch out...you've got competition! If you can't/don't want to join, but still want to buy Mars-related books, etc, buy them off of the M.S. site, as they make money that way as well..every little bit helps...

Do you have to be a society member to attend the convention? If they don't they should allow non-members to attend for a fee. And I agree, it'll be nice when we don't need NASA to get us anywhere anymore (even though they don't get us anywhere!)) If we're ever able to launch a mission soley from private funds I think we should set up base in Nigeria. They've expressed interest in exploiting space to help their economy but don't have the budget for it. Plus equatorial regions are good places to launch from if I remember right.

Yes...becoming a member as an automatic part of signing up for the Mars Society Convention, unless you're already a member, in which they give you a $50 discount (same as the membership fee) So, essentially the cost is the same for everyone to go to the convention.
Anyhow, I'm psyched about going..should be a lot of fun...

Yes, by all means, do it! I know Boulder is far away from just about everywhere (I'm coming from FL, BTW) I think it's going to be a real blast (excuse the pun )

Try to make up your mind by June 30th, as the rates go up then (like $50 more) For travel arrangements, I used Hotwire.com...I saved 40% on airfare and hotel (although I'm staying in the next town over..Boulder is a costly place to rent a room) over what it would have cost normally.

Just think...FOUR days of everything to do with Mars...considering we can't go there yet, the Mars Society Convention should be next the best thing

Yeah I guess I better hurry up and decide whether I'm going or not. I want to go though, I've never attended anything like that before. Is anyone else here plannning to attend the convention?
