I'll start off with the outstanding AI artwork of the 18 wheeler barreling along a crushed regolith roadway under electric lines from the Lunar solar farms.

GW, Tahanson, good to see you guys again.
Was talking about the Northrop Moon Train study with some friends on Twitter, had a look at the forums to show them how long I've been banging on about trains in space for. I'm doing engineering for Rocketlab these days on the space systems side.

First, thanks again for stopping in ...
Second ... congratulations on landing what sounds like a **really** interesting position!
Third.... please take a look at GW Johnson's course ... we would ** really ** like to find a teacher who would like to use this material.
The course is intended to provide a foundation for working with GMAT, which would be the logical next step for learning how to plan space missions.
Search for "class" and select "Traditional" using title field.
I **just** reported success in configuring an Azure account for the next 20 days, to use so SpaceNut can bang on kbd512's updates as soon as he finishes them.

For JoshNH4H re post about solar panels in space ...

If you have time, please develop your thoughts about labor needed for the solar-panels-in-space business opportunity.
You indicated the labor needed might be in short supply, but I have very little knowledge of the industry so am unsure what kind of labor is needed.

Coupla items ... first, thanks for the example of an error that you observed when experimenting with ChatGPT.
I get the impression you have absolutely no idea how long I have been working with ChatGPT (in its various iterations).
I have been documenting my experiences in the forum since the product first became available to the public.
Having said that... Every presentation of the ChatGPT window comes with the warning that it can make mistakes, and i have seen plenty, and expect to see plenty more.
I use the product for IT work, and have found it astonishingly helpful for those tasks.
My use of the product that you see here in the forum is primarily as a presentation engine. It does a superb job of formatting for bbcode, but it is not perfect and I just have to put up with the occasional lapses.
What I am building up to is a presentation I saw a few weeks ago. The interviewer was talking to one of the leading lights in the intellectual community qualified to talk about AI products in general. This gent offered the observation that the usefulness of ChatGPT is inversely related to the intelligence and skill level of the user. I suspect that the tool will be useless for a person of your caliber. For me, it is a brain amplifier that allows me to at least occasionally attempt to reach the rarified atmosphere where you and your peers spend so much time.

My mistake on that—seen too many people get tripped up by this and wouldn't want it to happen to you.
Had a coworker recently (someone who I generally think is smart) try to tell me I was using the formula for the correlation coefficient (r) when I was presenting the slope of the line of best fit. Long story short I was right and he was using ChatGPT as a search engine.

I also have a limited knowledge but generally speaking every process has a labor input, and labor is in general the largest input cost for any product (at least when you include the labor embodied in eg the machines and buildings and such). Given that there's not currently any people in space, transportation up is expensive, and living there will tend to merit hardship wages, we can expect labor to be more expensive than Earth by a lot for a long while (whether you pay that cost directly by paying for people's ticket up and lodging or indirectly by paying them wages that make it worth their while).

Thanks for that reasonable explanation...
Do you see any potential for growth of the teleoperation industry into this sector?
I've been following experiments with warehouse equipment operation, as an example.
One of the major names in this (currently small) industry appears to be growing. They recently changed from requiring drivers to live in Colorado to allowing some to live elsewhere. That would seem to me to be a logical growth path.
I attended a neighborhood gathering last night, and all the working age attendees appear to be doing remote work routinely, with a mix of at-office and remote. All these folks are white collar workers whose career fields lend themselves to remote work.
Teleoperation would permit that mode of working to extend to the blue collar career fields, and eventually that might include in-space specialties.

Something else to consider as you think about AI tools is the level of product with which you are working.
I decided to pay for the first paid tier... there are higher levels but I am quite impressed by the enhancements of the current product.
I am at a pricing tier such that I only get the high quality product a few hours per day and then the system throws me back to 3.5. I close up shop at that point. I am ** really ** able to perceive the difference.

I'd like to invite you to participate in testing of FluxBB 1.5.12 which is available thanks to Azure's low price introductory offering.
Everyone with an id created before September of 2023 can log in. The Admins would ** really ** appreciate our members giving the new software a work out. We are on the verge of rolling it out, and don't want any errors to occur if we can help it.
The url is posted at the top of the topic for FluxBB ... the IP address starts with 40.

In general, the tough part of automating manufacturing processes is getting every process step so standardized and so reliable that a machine can do it, with industrial machines historically being very dumb. I think there's a real prospect for that to change with advances in computer vision.
PV panel production, which generates a relatively small item many times over, strikes me as well-suited to automation.
Mining (especially on the Moon where we don't have 10,000 years experience) seems harder to fully automate because the preexisting environment is inherently uncontrolled. But I'm sure there are big advances to be made in cases where labor is that much more expensive. I think a reasonable goal is "the only humans on site are fixing machines".
It's also possible to build a device with a VR headset and controls that allows people to operate machine arms and such from Earth. But given the tradeoffs of that it seems like a 10% better solution and not a 90% better solution.

Thanks for noting the remote VR option.
I count 10% as a win at this point. It will eventually become 100%, as the technology improves. Phantom is the name of the company I am following. They use large screens and not VR at this point. However, the military (ie, Ukraine) is pushing the VR headset control technology hard, because lives are literally at stake, and portability is a bonus.

Hey Tahanson,
I appreciate your kind words.
Maybe you can answer a question I have—what is the purpose of this thread as compared to replying directly to my post in the topic where I posted it?
The way the forum is organized these days seems quite strange to me

For JoshNH4H re #19
I signed on just now to thank you for your post in the Phoenix topic. Your emphasis on the Mars angle is interesting and it may very well be helpful to the folks working the problem in Arizona.
Regarding your post #19... somehow I missed the question, or possibly planned to reply and never got back to it. The purpose of setting up the entire set of topics for our members is deliberately to avoid having one of the admins showing up as the most recent person to comment on something one of members has contributed. We hope to have a "Like" feature, but that will not happen until kbd512 finds time to update FluxBB 1.5.11 to 1.5.12. All the software updates have been applied and tested thoroughtly in our Azure account. However, actually implementing the changes is a ** whole ** other level of risk. I am confident kbd512 will carry out the needed steps with great care, but there are risks that he must manage.
Thanks for your continuing interest in and support of the forum.

The large post was a welcome sight for sure but it's still like you indicated fading into the background just like the price of gas or oil until the next big rise in cost or in this case draught that is lasting.
