That is a hefty increase from current 2 Gb. If a NewMars member decides to open a DropBox account please let us know so we can apply for the offer of increased storage.

We are happy to welcome former members back into the active community. It has been brought to my attention that a number of former members are marked as "banned". In many cases, this marking is a limitation of FluxBB, which is the forum software.
Because of the onslaught of thousands upon thousands of spammers over 20+ years, the decision was made to close off access to inactive accounts. Unfortunately, the only mechanism available is the "banning" tool. If you are an older member and you find your account has been banned, it may have been locked to prevent hacker access. You can ask SpaceNut to reactivate the account. See the procedure below. Those who were banned for inappropriate behavior may also apply. SpaceNut will then have the opportunity to evaluate your application.

We have received an application for membership! Because we have admitted a number of folks to the forum since SpaceNut put our new policy into place, I am attempting to improve the admission process. Our five+ new members are all highly qualified, but they are not active in the forum. Here is a copy of my reply to today's applicant.
It is good to hear from you, and I am hoping you might find participation in the NewMars forum to be interesting and rewarding.
Please tell me which of our popular authors you most enjoy reading. We are trying to admit members who are interested in contributing to the 20+ year life of the forum. Please let me know which of the topics are of greatest interest to you, and please send a sample post to one of them. I will post your message for our members to evaluate.
I have admitted five folks since we changed to email admission, but none of them are active. I am attempting to change the admission process so that our new members are active and productive.

There is a need for a member able to run Python programs to help GW Johnson design a solid fuel rocket for SpinLaunch. The problem to be solved includes specification of the rocket nozzle off center, and thus dealing with the resulting off-center vector for the exhaust. It may be possible to adjust the direction of the exhaust to partially compensate for the off-center location. However, beyond that, there may be an opportunity to take advantage of the off-center thrust to curve the vehicle toward the East, as is required after the vertical phase of the flight comes to an end.
If anyone is ** out there ** with the needed background and equipment, please read the procedure in the recruiting topic.
Clarification: I am looking for members who would like to become part of this community. If you decide to apply for membership, I will ask you to describe how you might be able and willing to contribute over an extended period. We have been in existence for over 20 years, and the archive contains posts by (on the order of) 1000 authors. It would help if you could take a moment to acquaint yourself with the forum structure and the historical record before jumping in.
In the case of the immediate problem.... A candidate might be working on a degree in aeronautical engineering, with a focus on solid fuel rocket design. There is NO solid fuel rocket in existence suitable for the SpinLaunch application. We (NewMars) have as good an opportunity as any group to find and publish the solution in a top tier journal.

There was/were one incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. One outgoing message(s) was/were sent.
Occasionally vendors send updates on software or new features on offer. That WAS NOT the case today. NewMarsMember has opened an account to try Microsoft Azure using a free 1 year trial. The purpose of the account is to provide a place for upgrade of the FluxBB software currently running the forum, thanks to the generous support of the Mars Society.
Today's arriving email was from GW Johnson regarding an offer by Mars Society to host his course on Basic Orbital Mechanics.
Update: With the assistance of ChatGPT4, the installation of a working LAMP system into an empty Linux Ubuntu Virtual Machine is complete.

Dropbox is offering to increase free disk storage to 16 Gb in return for enlisting friends to use Dropbox.
That is a hefty increase from current 2 Gb. If a NewMars member decides to open a DropBox account please let us know so we can apply for the offer of increased storage.
Google announced that they have extended their policy on inactive accounts. Now they will wait two years before deleting an account.
NewMars.com is back online after an unscheduled outage for extended maintenance. Work is under way to maintain the site.
An Email Outreach campaign to former NewMars members is on hold. One member will be reviewed per day, for 3+ years.
Recordings of the 25th Anniversary Mars Society Conference are now available on YouTube.

For existing registered members who have lost your password ... If you remember the email address you used to register, you can request a recovery email at that address. That is a hefty increase from current 2 Gb. If a NewMars member decides to open a DropBox account please let us know so we can apply for the offer of increased storage.

Recordings of the 25th Anniversary Mars Society Conference are now available on YouTube.

For existing registered members who have lost your password ... If you remember the email address you used to register, you can request a recovery email at that address. I am happy to report that we have received an inquiry about membership...
Here is my reply:
For Ulys!
Thank you for your interest in NewMars.com/forums.As a first impression, you have the sweep of vision that would blend well into the mix of people we have as members.***I am a (Junior) Moderator for the forum, serving as tahanson43206.As a (Junior) Moderator, I accept responsibility for various duties, such as admitting new members.***I have admitted five new members since SpaceNut blocked spammers and changed to email registration. All of these folks were highly qualified, but none have chosen to become regular contributing members. On the other hand, several of the new members have contributed substantial value to the forum, with new topics and comments on the work of others.I am interested in bringing in highly qualified persons, such as you appear to be, but I am not interested in going through all the work of admitting a new member only to discover that the candidate is not interested in participating in the life of the forum.***We have been in business for over 20 years, and have many thousands of topics and many more posts supporting those topics. We have a small active membership of a dozen or so people, and an overall membership of persons qualified to post of about 1000 folks.***I am attempting to find a way to discover the depth of a candidate's interest in the forum. To that end, I will invite you to review the 20 year history of the forum, and point out to me one or two outstanding contributors you would ** really ** like to interact with.***As a rule of thumb, it is understandable that a new member might wish to find an audience, and you may be someone who could find such an audience via this forum. However, I am interested in admitting members who are genuinely interested in the work of others such as Void, or GW Johnson, or Calliban, or kbd512, or Terraformer. ***I will report your application to the forum, and look forward to your further interest.***You may provide a list of citations of your previous work, and I will publish the list if it seems appropriate for this forum.(th)
And here is the inquiry:
My name is Ulys Sorok and I’m the founder of GRAM (Galactic Resource Advancement Mechanism Corporation), an early-stage startup that aims to build humanity’s first self-replicating machines.
Prior to this I was a Research Engineer at CESER (Centre for Self-Replication Research) at Carleton University, under Dr. Alex Ellery, who is currently our Chief Scientist. I also led North American expansion for Sam Altman’s Worldcoin with Tools for Humanity.
I’d love to join your forum and contribute as a community member.
Ulys
I will report any further correspondence.
If there is a current member who would have time and interest to investigate the background of this candidate, I'd appreciate your reporting your findings in this topic.
The candidate seems ambitious. That is a prerequisite for membership in this forum.
However, ambition can occasionally exceed capability.
On the ** other ** hand, a forum such as ours can be a place where a person might try out ideas, and a few of them may lead to something substantial.
Void (as an example) is notable for having inspired the development of a vision for ballistic delivery of supplies to Mars. His original idea involved balloons (as I recall) but multiple iterations of conversation with other members led to identification of a business opportunity for delivery of non-living supplies to Mars at competitive prices, using minimal atmospheric braking and lithobraking as the main means of reducing momentum to zero.
Definition: lithobraking: Use of regolith to slow an arriving delivery
References: There are three pages (2 + ) of posts that contain the word "lithobraking"

A request by (th) here: https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.ph … 01#p225201
A query for the said name results in this: https://www.bing.com/search?q=Ulys+Soro … 7F&pc=U531
https://ca.linkedin.com/in/ulys?origina … ing.com%2F
So, something or someone with that name seems to exist. The one saying that they are "Ulys Sorok" could very well be.
The fact that I am old means that the majority of people alive now are younger than I am. It seems like I should not have to wait to die to just get out of the way of a younger creative person.
And my credentials are so bogus, I don't understand why you think I am qualified to make a judgement. But an opinion says how could this be harmful?
This does look like fun, articles to read apparently: https://carleton.ca/ceser/
I would expect that self-replication patterns will come as multi-element in nature, not a singular machine. And that will likely be cyborg in nature, as it is now, with machine and organic elements. On a glance it seems that they may be looking into biological things as well as machines.
It is unlikely that I can do a good evaluation in 30 minutes, and as I have said I should likely remove myself as a test standard to do such an evaluation anyway. Very likely vastly above my pay grade seems to fit the situation.
Done
