Join us for our Monthly NSS North Houston Space Society (http://NorthHoustonSpace.org) meeting to learn about touching the edge of space, seeing the edge of the atmosphere using high altitude balloons.

Follow up on NSS Houston presentation ....

This was a ** very ** interesting talk, with plenty of slides and short videos to explain the student activities.

Over the course of several years, the presenter and a number of adult assistants provided opportunities for a number of students from a school district in Utah to build and fly scientific balloons to heights as great as 115,000 feet. The balloons were designed to burst so that no debris was scattered about. A parachute was used to deliver the electronics package safely to Earth.

After the balloon STEM presentation, Dr Greg Stanley gave his usual thorough report on space related events of the past month.

I am happy to try to answer any questions that forum members might have.

This was an outstanding meeting, and they are always of good to excellent quality.

Dr. Greg Stanley gave a lengthy and detailed dive into the American lunar lander, during his monthly Space News segment.

The second half of the meeting was given over to five teams of young people who had participated in a recent Houston area Science Fair. The presenters appeared to all be of college age, and the presentations were all well done. A couple were ** really ** well done!

I have reported the artificial leaf presentation elsewhere.

The lead off presentation was about software development for a web site that is available online now for visitors.

The aspect of the presentation that I found most interesting was the modeling of nuclear fusion reactions.

The two models were for Hydrogen / Deuterium and for Boron 11 and Hydrogen.

Working from memory ... one presentation was on the use of ion flow to lift an "aircraft" on Earth in an ordinary atmosphere.

I was astonished to learn that mere ions can lift a small "aircraft" using only a 6 volt battery as power. In fact, the student reported lifting a total of 10 pounds, which included the weight of the frame and a payload. The efficiency was only 1.8% which (I presume) is probably a lot less than even a helicopter or drone, but the fact that the method worked at all was amazing (to me for sure).

There was an interesting experiment with growing plants in simulated Mars soil and simulated Lunar soil, leavened with commercially available manure.

A surprising result (from my perspective) was that plants did better in the Lunar soil.

One detail that was ** not ** included in the Mars test was perchlorates, so I think we have to assume those were "removed" from the simulated Mars soil.

I am hoping the recording of the meeting will be made available on YouTube, but that depends upon the chapter President having the time to attend to that.

Because there is (currently) no featured speaker, I have introduced the idea given to us by our Alaskan Correspondent, to harvest material from Apophis by injecting water (or other suitable liquid) into the rubble pile, allowing it to freeze, and pulling the entire collection out with gentle force.

The idea has received unexpected support from GW Johnson.

The NSS chapter meeting did not feature the planned talk on Crops, but Greg Stanley provided a detailed report on space launch activity during the past month.

There is a new VR experience opportunity in Houston, and the chapter is thinking about scheduling a field trip.

About our Featured Speaker: Chris Kapp
Chris got the space bug early in life with his father working for the US Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB. Chris studied aeronautical engineering at RWTH Aachen (Germany) and NIT Trondheim (Norway) where he finished with a master’s of science (Dipl.-Ing.) degree.

His career focused on Oil & Gas, Energy turbomachinery applications working for companies such as Siemens and Rolls-Royce. Recently, Chris worked as a professor of engineering at Lone Star College.

He has collaborated with the American Petroleum Institute, Dept. of Energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency on the technology, efficiency, and environmental performance of turbomachinery.

Chris is married and lives in Houston, TX. The youngest of three sons attended the NASA Hunch program in Cy-Woods High School, and went on to study physics and astronomy at Texas A&M. He is working for the aerospace industry in Colorado Springs, continuing the family aerospace tradition.

Chris got the space bug early in life with his father working for the US Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB. Chris studied aeronautical engineering at RWTH Aachen (Germany) and NIT Trondheim (Norway) where he finished with a master’s of science (Dipl.-Ing.) degree.

His career focused on Oil & Gas, Energy turbomachinery applications working for companies such as Siemens and Rolls-Royce. Recently, Chris worked as a professor of engineering at Lone Star College.

He has collaborated with the American Petroleum Institute, Dept. of Energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency on the technology, efficiency, and environmental performance of turbomachinery.

Chris is married and lives in Houston, TX. The youngest of three sons attended the NASA Hunch program in Cy-Woods High School, and went on to study physics and astronomy at Texas A&M. He is working for the aerospace industry in Colorado Springs, continuing the family aerospace tradition.

The North Houston NSS chaper is setting up for today's meeting.

It is 18:57 UTC - in London the time is 19:57.... Hopefully this is a good time for our European members.

Dr. Greg Stanley is going to talk about the Polaris Dawn mission.

I am logged in without a camera or a microphone, just to take advantage of a walk-around head set I have.

The video is good. The chapter has been asked to provide a dedicated laptop for the online audience. I don't know if that has happened, but I do know the request was under consideration. The chapter can grow it's online audience if the experience is good.

The first part of the meeting is a presentation about space weather.

The visiual showing now appears to be a chart of the Sun on 14 September 2024 at 5:24 UTC.

If I understand the presentation correctly, the past month has been quiet, but a significant event of some kind just occurred.

Happily, whatever it is is not currently expected to hit Earth.

The presentation concluded with some nice images of aurora activity.

The opening report was about the record of 19 people in orbit.

The next topic is the Polaris Dawn mission with excellent images.

The slide showing includes pressure readings: Capsule Zero, Suit: 5.2 psi

Notes: Altitude 700 km, 2 crew outside for 20 minutes.

The next slide showed inside the capsule, with pressure rising after the door was secured.

The next slide shows a list of achievements or related information.

Boeing appears to have the landing procedure working ... this was the second such landing.

Someone in the audience offered the opinion that NASA could not take the risk of losing the astronauts, after the two Shuttle accidents.

One of these is is the sonic boom during landing...

Apparently there is another analysis of the water deluge system (drinking water)

The audience member reported that there is an automatic delay from the complaints received by the government.

The conspiracy theorist offered the opinion that complaints may be submitted in order to reset the clock.

This is only enough for about 1 hour per day coverage in the US.

Partner AT&T will start service at around 45-60 satellites.
