Heat Pump plus Thermal Energy Storage Hybrid Home System

This new topic attempts to merge the separate flows of discussion of Thermal Energy Storage, and Heat Pumps.

We (NewMars members) have the opportunity to create posts that assemble the knowledge that would be needed to combine these two ideas and produce a working system.

It has been suggested that intermittent energy sources such as wood, solar and wind might feed energy into a thermal energy store.

The output could be a combination of energy to drive a generator for home power us, and energy to heat The interior of the home.

The inverse is also possible, if cold is stored during winter, and then harnessed for home cooling in summer.

I'm hoping that one ore more NewMars members will put numbers into posts, to add substance to the concept.

Re: Heat Pump plus Thermal Energy Storage Hybrid Home System

That would mean designing for a ground source heat pump. The storage is in the ground within an isolate container that is sealed such that outside water would not enter the chamber. Its walls are further insulated to keep heat loss low.

Here is such a designed system.

Its about sizing for the application.

More heat sources as well as a separate cold chamber can be also possible as that's more loops of tubing running with in the storage chamber. A few more pumps and temperature control to make heat or cold for thehome.

For SpaceNut re #3

Thank you for the excellent illustration you found, and for the text you provided.

To put the finishing touches on this topic, please add a thermal energy store.  This is NOT a ground sourced heating system, such as are in place all around the world. This is a new concept never implemented on Earth.  it is an idea that arises from discussion in the NewMars forum.

This concept is to store energy in an underground store (such as a concrete basin filled with sand).

You and Calliban and kbd512 have been discussing such an energy store in other topics.

Please see if you can combine the two, to deliver a new hybrid system that does not exist on Earth (to my knowledge) but which ** could ** come into being.
