Microchipping kids? They’re not pets

Society should adopt a general rule: if the World Economic Forum thinks something is a good idea, we do the opposite.

As part of its Davos 2022 thought-fest, an article appeared on the World Economic Forum site penned by Kathleen Philips, Vice President of R&D for imec and General Manager of its Eindhoven site in the Netherlands, regarding the topic of transhumanism.

Included in this article was the casual suggestion that we might one day consider microchipping children ‘for their safety’.

Pretty much every dangerous and terrible idea is ‘for our safety’ these days, but even the pro-bubble-wrap helicopter parents stopped and lofted an eyebrow. While they don’t mind fitting their kids with backpacks that have a leash hanging off which they use to walk their children like dogs – at least the backpacks can be taken off.

Once we start talking about altering humanity out of choice, rather than medical necessity, civilisation needs to have a different conversation.

Re: Long-term irrelevance of human colonization

Swede or Japanese Conformity the act of matching attitudes?

Law of Jante the Swedish, Danish, Nordic, Scandanavia code of conduct

It is used generally in colloquial speech in the Nordic countries as a sociological term to denote a social attitude of disapproval towards expressions of individuality and personal success.
http://www.svd.se/kultur/sprakspalt/avu … 116508.svd

Created in fiction by the Danish-Norwegian author Aksel Sandemose and has been assumed by some to explain the egalitarian nature of Nordic countries

There are ten rules in the law as defined by Sandemose, all expressive of variations on a single theme and usually referred to as a homogeneous unit: You are not to think you're anyone special, or that you're better than us.

The ten rules state:

You're not to think you are anything special.
You're not to think you are as good as we are.
You're not to think you are smarter than we are.
You're not to imagine yourself better than we are.
You're not to think you know more than we do.
You're not to think you are more important than we are.
You're not to think you are good at anything.
You're not to laugh at us.
You're not to think anyone cares about you.
You're not to think you can teach us anything.

The Janters who transgress this unwritten "law" are regarded with suspicion and some hostility, as it goes against the town's communal desire to preserve harmony, social stability and uniformity.

Re: Long-term irrelevance of human colonization

Altered Carbon discussed immortality, it is a 2002 cyberpunk novel by the English writer Richard K. Morgan set in a future in which interstellar travel and relative immortality is facilitated by transferring consciousnesses between bodies "sleeves" there was also a tv show. I'm not sure where to put this one it is more fringe 'scifi' but it could also be discussed as part of 'Gene editing' or the whole cryogenic sleep or people wish to hibernate in suspended animation 'Deep Sleep' because they fear death and want a cure for Death? Some say there is also a similar 'Transferts' a French science fiction thriller television series about a guy who wakes up after five years of being in a coma.

Re: Long-term irrelevance of human colonization

A future might see a blend of human and AI and Cyborg. Much of how humans might evolve or de-evolve or change to something different was speculated in scifi works.

The new Truth of A.I. and Human in neo post modernist world?

Humans Aren’t Mentally Ready for an AI-Saturated ‘Post-Truth World’

https://www.wired.com/story/generative- … sychology/

the Cyberpunk world evolution that make happen with or without 'Space Exploration' sciences

quote

Artificial intelligence is arguably the most rapidly advancing technology humans have ever developed. A year ago you wouldn’t often hear AI come up in a regular conversation, but today it seems there’s constant talk about how generative AI tools like ChatGPT and DALL-E will affect the future of work, the spread of information, and more.

they are worried

The AI era promises a flood of disinformation, deepfakes, and hallucinated “facts.” Psychologists are only beginning to grapple with the implications.

The Orwellian features in our fiction and scifi, the Dystopia's the comicbook worlds and movies of Judge Dredd, a dark future propaganda society often feature mankind turning inward like in Robocop, William Gibson's Neuromancer trilogy, Brazil by Terry Gilliam the world so consumed by bureaucracy. In many British works Punk-Rockers were the under ground sub culture, but maybe also criminal at times or addicted to a new drug, in American works AfroFuturism creeps in as a look while minds get hijacked by phones or the latest electronic noises and rapper sounds, others compare it to steampunk or the 'Wakanda' look the writers and artists want a replaced White or Asian Speculative Fiction with the cultures and experiences of Black people around the globe, in District 9 they base the concept on Alien invasion and a science fiction film set in South Africa that uses an alien species known as Prawns to explore themes of xenophobia. some might not be strictly science fiction and feature more magic or voodoo or fantasy like 'Wakanda' plot lines. In movies and art the Hippies movement was mostly described as a positive thing,  "Flower Power" or Rain and Sun Wisdom, the green enlightenment against Vietnam era wars it maybe features in Farscape or video games a ten-year-old child, one of several born en route to Vertumna IV, a distant alien planet with animal-human people? Just as a band Green Day wanted to be part of a neo-woodstock counter culture movement, the Rock Against Bush was a project mobilizing punk and alternative musicians in the 80s Punks rocked against British politicans, in the worlds of British scifi the 'Punk Rocker' was suddenly a symbol of rebellion against Thatcherism and the poverty and crime and police oppression or government oppression during the Political rule of Margaret Thatcher so naturally the Punk look became part of the scifi look with non-human robot faces. Cyber-Punk combined ideas into giant world, an entire subgenre of science fiction in a dystopian futuristic setting that tends to focus on a combination of lowlife and high tech, there is still a lot of debate when Cyberpunk really started, some will even date it back as far as Metropolis a 1927 film but it had a lot of influence from many writers.

Cyberpunk and Dystopia features in the fiction worlds of Philip K Dick and Blade Runner movies it seems to base around real science and speculative tech, V for Vendetta a totalitarian future Britain ruled with an iron fist in the real world the masks they became iconic, Guy Fawkes Mask inspired the real life Anonymous hacker movement. The concepts of Dystopia and Cyberpunk often features in works from Japan like 'Ghost in the Shell' etc it will often take inspiration from the real world. Blade Runner is often quoted as the movie that defined Cyberpunk, its "Tears in rain" speech is a 42-word monologue, consisting of the last words of character Roy Batty (portrayed by Rutger Hauer) in the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner. Written by David Peoples and altered by Hauer, the monologue is frequently quoted. In the Blade Runner movie Roy Batty is the leader of the artificial human-ish rebels and killers and leads the break away faction, the leader renegade Nexus-6 replicants and the main antagonist playing opposite Harrison Ford's character in a hunting game of cat and mouse. Deckard is a "blade runner", a special agent in the Los Angeles police department employed to hunt down and "retire" replicants. Critic Mark Rowlands described the improvised speech as "perhaps the most moving death soliloquy in cinematic history", and it is commonly viewed as the defining moment of Hauer's acting career. The speech in the movie is mostly made up in the moment mostly improvised, the original script, before Hauer's rewrite Hauer described this as "opera talk" and "hi-tech speech" with no bearing on the rest of the film, so he "put a knife in it" the night before filming, without Scott's knowledge. After filming the scene with Hauer's version, crew-members applauded, with some even 'in tears'.

Ridley Scott on Blade Runner's Tears in Rain Monologue
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPUIDHQv8rM

Wrote it at 1 o clock in the morning 'I was going to be fired at 3'

Deckard retires the remaining replicants and is hunted by a dying Roy. Deckard ends up dangling from a building and is saved from the fall by Roy.

Today people will continue to quote and culturally reference 'Blade Runner' in their books and video games.

Advocet Hotel

The abandoned Advocet Hotel lies in Vista del Rey, Heywood, near the Delamain HQ, and it’s here where you’ll find one of the more interesting nods to Blade Runner in Cyberpunk 2077.

Ride the elevator to the top floor and make your way out onto the roof terrace. Explore and you’ll find a gentleman sitting on the ground with a white dove - which you may recognize from this iconic moment.

Voight-Kampff Test

In the Blade Runner universe, replicants are artificial humans which have infiltrated the human world, and being able to tell these apart from real people is pretty important, which is why the Voight-Kampff test is used to see if the person responding is capable of passing as a human.

This same test is used in Cyberpunk 2077, during the Where Is My Mind epilogue, late into the game. If you don’t pass, you have a problem.
Syd Mead

Syd Mead is the concept artist for Blade Runner, and he also worked with Blade Runner’s director, Ridley Scott, on the equally iconic Aliens. It’s only natural that someone so influential to both the direction of this game, and the cyberpunk genre as a whole, is given a reverential nod in Cyberpunk 2077.

First evidence of 'quantum superchemistry' observed in lab
https://interestingengineering.com/scie … ved-in-lab
The scientific community has achieved a remarkable feat with the recent article titled "First Evidence of 'Quantum Superchemistry' Observed in Lab." In a breakthrough that has eluded researchers for two decades, the University of Chicago's scientists have successfully demonstrated the existence of a phenomenon known as "quantum superchemistry."

Quantum superchemistry, a concept predicted but never before observed in a laboratory setting, involves the collective accelerated reactions of particles sharing the same quantum state. This milestone holds profound implications, particularly in the fields of quantum computing and advanced technology development.

The foundation of this accomplishment rests on the concept of Bose-Einstein condensate, a state of matter formed when ultracold atoms amalgamate and collectively behave as a single entity. The researchers harnessed this phenomenon to induce chemical reactions within the quantum state, showcasing the particles' collective behavior and accelerated reactions.

The experimental process involved meticulously cooling cesium atoms to extremely low temperatures and subjecting them to chemical reactions using a magnetic field. Through this method, the scientists observed dynamics that aligned with the predicted behaviors of superchemistry.

Professor Cheng Chin, associated with the James Franck Institute and Enrico Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago, captured the essence of the achievement by describing this era as "very exciting." The realization of quantum superchemistry opens doors to transformative applications in quantum technology, quantum chemistry, and a deeper understanding of the fundamental laws of physics.

The practical implications of this discovery are substantial, with potential applications ranging from quantum computing advancements to insights into the intricate nature of quantum behaviors. This groundbreaking achievement exemplifies the continuous progress of scientific exploration and its capacity to reshape the boundaries of knowledge and innovation.

Digitial machine Avatars bringing stuff to normal or abnormal scifi life.

People being remade inside virtual world and machine is a theme with video game, comicbooks, novels the 'Ghost in the Machine' idea the Virtual Man or 'Ghost in the Shell'  a Japanese Cyberpunk franchise animation.

Paralyzed Woman Able To 'Speak' Through Digital Avatar In World First
https://science.slashdot.org/story/23/0 … orld-first
An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Guardian:
A severely paralyzed woman has been able to speak through an avatar using technology that translated her brain signals into speech and facial expressions
https://www.theguardian.com/society/202 … first-time

The findings have been published in the journal Nature.
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06443-4

So another element I find interesting with this tech developing is a very injured person might one day operate machine through their mind, they might see from inside a machine or they could perhaps provide communication back up at a remote location that over winters at the South Pole even though they have a disability. This tech could help any person hurt in war or a person who is disabled on a future Mars can now still work or move and talk inside a Virtual Computer Avatar device.

The Gruesome Story of How Neuralink’s Monkeys Actually Died
https://www.wired.com/story/elon-musk-p … ey-deaths/
Elon Musk says no primates died as a result of Neuralink’s implants. A WIRED investigation now reveals the grisly specifics of their deaths as US authorities have been asked to investigate Musk’s claims.

Public records reviewed by WIRED, and interviews conducted with a former Neuralink employee and a current researcher at the University of California, Davis primate center, paint a wholly different picture of Neuralink’s animal research. The documents include veterinary records, first made public last year, that contain gruesome portrayals of suffering reportedly endured by as many as a dozen of Neuralink’s primate subjects, all of whom needed to be euthanized. These records could serve as the basis for any potential SEC probe into Musk’s comments about Neuralink, which has faced multiple federal investigations as the company moves toward its goal of releasing the first commercially available brain-computer interface for humans.

Documents viewed as part of a new investigation by Wired, however, as well as testimony from a former employee, contradict Musk's claims entirely — and the details are as upsetting as they are damning, adding to a mounting case against the safety of Neuralink's devices.

Scientists Solve the Mystery of How Jellyfish Can Regenerate a Tentacle In Days

https://science.slashdot.org/story/24/0 … le-in-days

The resident stem cells that exist in and near the tentacle are responsible for generating all cellular lineages during homeostasis and regeneration, meaning they maintain and repair whatever cells are needed during the jellyfish's lifetime, according to Nakajima. Repair-specific proliferative cells only appear at the time of injury. "Together, resident stem cells and repair-specific proliferative cells allow rapid regeneration of the functional tentacle within a few days," Nakajima said, noting that jellyfish use their tentacles to hunt and feed. [...] The cellular origins of the repair-specific proliferative cells observed in the blastema remain unclear, though, and the researchers say the currently available tools to investigate the origins are too limited to elucidate the source of those cells or to identify other, different stem-like cells.
