Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut .... once you have the needed hardware, you'll be able to load all the software to support the forum.

I take it Santa Claus left you something other than a removable hard drive case, and a set of SSD RMV drives.

We'll have to wait for the Easter Bunny, apparently.

***
I picked up on your comment about KRUSTY ... NASA published a short 19 page pdf about the testing of the system in 2019.

Hopefully they've made progress since then.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re warm weather in December ...

I enjoyed seeing the back-and-forth with you and kbd512 today ...

It is good to see you are spared the 50 degree temperatures in the house, at least for now.  Things could (and probably will) change soon enough.

I spent 3 hours doing outside chores today, wearing just a sweater/pullover to keep warm.  I have a snow thrower, but I'm leaving it hanging on a peg in the garage. It may not be needed this winter.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re forum activity during Holidays ...

It is good to see so many members able to find the time to read and post ... this will be a long weekend, so for those who are still working, there will be a bit of extra time to help to move topics along.

I wonder if you took a look at the Argentina YouTube channel that Mars_B4_Moon found?  That is a good example for GW Johnson, who has created a wealth of course material that we have been unable to place in the hands/minds of students.

Perhaps an online video channel will help us reach potential rocket navigators for the coming decades.

I sure hope so!

Re: Housekeeping

Manufacturing Process Considerations for Nickel-63 Sheets/Rolls

1. Material Synthesis:
   - Isotope Production: The first step is the production of Ni-63. This could involve enriching natural nickel or a specific nuclear reaction.
   - Purity and Quality Control: Ensuring the purity of Ni-63 is vital for both safety and efficiency.

2. Sheet/Roll Fabrication:
   - Forming Sheets/Rolls: Converting Ni-63 into thin sheets or rolls. This involves material processing techniques that can handle and maintain the integrity of radioactive materials.
   - Thickness and Uniformity: Consistency in thickness is key for predictable energy output.

3. Interleaving Material:
   - Beta Particle Capture: The choice of material for interleaving is critical. It must be capable of efficiently capturing beta particles while being durable and stable.
   - Integration with Ni-63: Ensuring a seamless integration of this material with Ni-63 sheets in a way that maximizes energy capture and minimizes waste or leakage.

4. Safety and Containment:
   - Radiation Shielding: Given the radioactive nature of Ni-63, adequate shielding during the manufacturing process is essential.
   - Handling Protocols: Establishing strict handling protocols to protect workers and the environment.

5. Q u a l i t y A s s u r a n c e:
   - Testing for Efficacy: R e g u l a r testing to ensure the s h e e t s / r o l l s meet the required energy output s p e c i f i c a t i o n s.
   - Longevity Testing: Assessing how the material performs over time, especially given the long service life expected.

6. Scalability and Logistics:
   - Scaling Up Production: Considering how to scale up the manufacturing process for large-scale production.
   - Transport and Storage: Safe and efficient methods for transporting and storing these radioactive materials.

7. Environmental and Regulatory Compliance:
   - Regulatory Approval: Ensuring compliance with all relevant nuclear material handling and environmental regulations.
   - Waste Management: Planning for the safe disposal or recycling of Ni-63 after its energy-producing life.

For SpaceNut ... thanks in large part to the many contributions by Mars_B4_Moon, the forum has reached another milestone.

We crossed 218000 in the past day, so I'll run the Potholes Scan today.

Looking forward into 2024 .... we have momentum building up toward duplication of the forum software on at least one of the Admin sites, and potentially as many as three.  kbd512 is working on preparing the existing FluxBB package to run with modern software.  I have a configuration of modern software installed and working on a test machine.  The next Google Meeting will take place Sunday January 7th, if the creek don't rise.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut .... can an Admin change the name of the creator of a topic?

I know all moderators and admins can edit the title.

Mars_B4_Moon stated that he did not name a topic although his name is on the topic.

The simplest explanation is that Mars_B4_Moon did not remember creating the topic.

However, for the time being, I am taking him at his word, so would like to know how a topic was created with his name on it without his knowing about it.

Alternatively, Mars_B4_Moon might have created a new topic with a name that was judged to be out of keeping with the standards of this forum.

but here is a screen cap from various search engines

You can try Web search software engines yourself

Google, Bing, Baidu, Startpage and more even if something changes it can be 'archived' although sometimes I have found old NASA pages give 404 errors on archive so even 'archive dot org' can fail

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=when+science+ … cs+newmars

The original thread seems to be now titled 'When Science climate change becomes perverted by Politics' so one can assume the thread itself was edited and the words 'climate change' have been added.

Re: Housekeeping

For Mars_B4_Moon ... thank for showing us the captures of contents from NewMars...

That is good information to have.

I have a suggestion.... please consider going back to edit the post that was copied from another topic that contains the phrase that indicates you did not create the name of the topic.

In it's new home, the post quote appears to be incorrect.

***
For SpaceNut ... I'd still like to know if an Admin can change the name of the creator of a topic.

I'd like to think that the forum software does not support that edit.

In any case, from Mars_B4_Moon's explanation, that did NOT happen.

Instead, it appears that Mars_B4_Moon created a topic, gave it a title, and then copied a post from another topic into the new one without editing the line that I noticed.

Re: Housekeeping

When a moderator or admin splits posts from a topic the post become part of the new naming and the first post takes on the user of that post as the creator of it.

This forum has no copy of posts and only a quote makes an inaccurate version of what someone has said.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Topic Split ....

We don't use the Topic Split tool very often....

There may be a quirk about that tool.... when a new topic is created normally, the Words Index Table is updated with the words contained in the title.

That is helpful later, when folks are looking for titles that contain words of interest.

However, it appears that the Split Tool may not include a call to the procedure that updates the Words Index.

I would like to know if you used the Split Tool to create the new topic that includes the words "Sexual Perversion"

If you ** did ** create the topic, we can proceed from there.

If you did ** not ** create the topic, then we need to find out who did.

Re: Housekeeping

Dear members of the NewMars online Administration and Moderation team
SpaceNut, tahanson43206, James Burk, Josh Cryer, kbd512, RobertDyck.

I would take this to Private Messaging if possible but I do not see a PM function on Newmars, I did not create the topic nor did I create the title. I have taken screen shots of search engine results maybe they can be part of the 'public record'.

I had no wish to create a topic with such a name nor desire to create such a topic in respect to moving other people's personal info and Privacy protections of electronic communications, Confidentiality moving a post or people’s personal data, if some person's handle / name / information is inside this thread it is not my doing. I am a member of Newmars I have no way to 'move' or 'edit'  other people also became involved and people's posts moved but for some reason Void's post on climate change has been edited and moved inside a thread called 'Sexual perversion' I am simply a member I have no way of undoing this.  I have a small profile on the web, I do not share my facebook or social media video account or blog but other people do have information on their handle, I had no wish to move their posts into a new thread.

The thread is not my creation, I did not wish to create the thread and I did not name this thread 'Sexual perversion'.

Some background, the original thread I believe was called 'When Science becomes perverted by Politics'. The thread was started by Oldfart1939 in year 2017 https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=7626 the thread was respectful while dealing with controversial subjects, such as political influence on science industries, it discussed how mankind polluted the environment or could warm or change the planet by some degree or a possible small rise of seal level on Earth, it also discussed alarmist doomsday articles written in news media. On newmars we have also discussed electricity on an offworld colony, energy and 'Nuclear Waste'. The subject and news of Sam Brinton department of energy, what I would describe as a 'strange person' dealt with Waste Disposition in the Office of Nuclear Energy, I did not see the discussion as a left vs right issue or conservative vs democrat issue but more of a discussion of his arrest and crimes. A new thread has been made called 'Sexual Perversion' there seems to be no notification giving the intention of moving people's post into a thread with such a strange title.
the original thread is now renamed 'When Science climate change becomes perverted by Politics

Going back to the original posts it, therefore, comes as a surprise that an entirely new post had been created, a new thread on it with my Mars_B4_Moon name attached called 'Sexual perversion'. Once again I am not the creator of this thread, for some reason the thread has been created and my name incorrectly attached as its 'Creator' when I am not its true creator.

In a recent online written conversation, I was even accused by Tahanson of starting the thread and having
'intense interest in sex, sexual activity and the full range of such activity.'
I did not take this as a personal attack or insult, I even used the newmars search function for 'my posts' on 'sexual activity' and could only find my posts in 5 threads. I have over 8 thousand 500 plus posts on newmars, we discuss all kinds of subjects from breeding cattle to test tube babies to human relations at research stations at the South Pole to Trump / Biden / Obama / Clinton family/ Bush family politics to animals in Biospheres to cloning to Monarchy rules so I expected the search engine to give more results but it did not. I have taken the accusation in jest, casual conversation, I do not see it as the act of making false statements that harm reputation. I remember the old Wild West days of the internet when you would see all kinds of meme or insults inside discussion groups, maybe even a religion atheist discussion you would find an islamic sending you 'Death Threats' so I do not take any kind of insult or personal attack on what is happening I only hope it is resolved.
members of the NewMars Admin and Moderation team  I have personally examined the thread I believe it could have been created yesterday on the 5th day of January 2024, it was not my wish to create this thread nor was it my wish to attach other people's names such as Void's climate change post into a thread entitled "Sexual Perversion"

Dear members of the NewMars Admin and Moderation team

I have a true appreciation of the discussion in the original thread by Oldfart1939 that was originally 'When Science becomes perverted by Politics'. It is a long discussion 28 internet webpages long.

here is a screen grab copy of the results from a number of online 'search engine' looking for the original thread
https://pic8.co/sh/rRcr0s.jpeg

https://www.imgbly.com/ib/Sdpjqtlxm5.jpeg

I do not believe the original thread was censored but parts of pages have been moved and a new thread created and given a new title 'Sexual Perversion'.
Once again this was not my doing, I had no part in the creation of this new thread.
Perhaps a thread is edited for political reasons? I fully understand things as getting 'politically heated' in the United States and sometimes the politics sees a temperature rise with each Presidency. I wish everyone well and hope they are happy voting for which ever candidate they choose, Trump, Biden or whatever other person running in 2024 scheduled for a Tuesday in the United States the 60th quadrennial presidential election November 2024.

I will probably post less 'news' this year

However I do believe discussion of Nuclear Energy, Nuclear Waste and criminality in the original thread was an important discussion even if it had a political angle. We also had interesting inputs from Artificial Intelligence Chatbots that suggested using Solar Sails to dump hazardous space waste into the Sun.

I understand newmars has its own issues, the forum itself is old and it has had a number of glitches and crashes over the years and the Mod / Admin team have put in good work to restore the original forum with discussion of historical Spaceflight feats, colonization of Mars, the Moon and Planets for many years.

If you click on the first post you can read 'Last edited by Mars_B4_Moon (2023-09-20 )' I believe this was my old post in the thread by Oldfart1939 but moved into a new topic 'Yesterday' on the 5th day of January 224
Again I did not created the thread and I did not title the thread

Post one reads #1  Mars_B4_Moon '2023-09-20' however this is my post from Oldfart1939 a thread made in 2017
https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=10662
the thread also reads Last edited by Mars_B4_Moon (2023-09-20)
this would have been my edit of my post inside the thread Oldfart1939 originally created, the original thread had posts from users Oldfart1939, Terraformer, GW Johnson, Calliban, RobertDyck, Louis, Antius, Dave_Duca, and Elderflower

Other people's posts have also been moved into the new thread, posts by SpaceNut and Void for example

The thread title itself in the new thread might be somewhat shocking or inappropriate or perhaps 'offensive' for people from certain countries depending on Local Law or State culture / customs.
If people in the new thread SpaceNut, Void, Tahanson43206, Kbd512 can come to agreement as to what would be done with the thread so it is not a shocking title or is not inappropriate then I support that decision to edit for a new more appropriate post.

Thank you for your time and I hope this clears up how events unfolded

Thanks for viewing the videos, and for your support of the publicity idea!

Thanks too, for persisting against the Apache Internal Server Error...

That small post should certainly not have caused ** any ** problem.

Hopefully our Webmaster will have the forum software running on our test machines in a few weeks.

We might be able to submit some of these posts that cause errors to see if they cause errors on the test machines.

Re: Housekeeping

This post is about the dreaded AISE fault we have been seeing on this forum....

Our Webmaster has a copy of the forum software and I am hopeful that some time during 2024, he will have time to update the forum software to run on modern supporting software (PHP, MySQL and Apache).  When that happens, we (Admins) will be able to run the forum on our home machines. We ** should ** be able to test the posts that cause the AISE, to see if all the upgrades solve the problem.

Until that happy day, here is a procedure I wrote for Dr. Johnson, who reported being blocked by AISE today:

Hi Dr. Johnson!

The procedure to deal with the dreaded AISE fault is simple but it requires patience.

Fortunately, if the procedure is laid out properly, I think our members can succeed with it.

Event:

1) NewMars member posts a message with <submit> button

2) Apache reports an error and refuses to accept the post

3) Member turns air blue in vicinity

4) Member saves the contents of the post (very carefully) in a Notepad document (or word) (or gedit in my case)

5) Member ** saves ** the document so it does not get erased accidentally ... file name given and accepted by operating system

6) Now, back at NewMars, delete all but the first line of the post.

7) Try Preview... if Preview works, add the second line

8) Repeat until Preview generates AISE fault

9) Carefully remove the last line and <submit>

10) Start a new message with the remainder of the post

11) AISE will occur, and the fault is probably the first line

12 Try placing spaces in the words of the first line (see recent example by SpaceNut)

13) Preview ... Repeat until entire post is saved on NewMars.

I had a long posting that failed 3 times this morning,  and twice this afternoon.  But,  some very short posts (like this one) have been successful this afternoon.  Somewhere,  something,  is too full of scrap data.

Re: Housekeeping

Most click the link style buttons have an unlaying java structure coding or dialog type interface due to windows and html coding of a page functions.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... I found another guaranteed cause for AISE...

a s  i s  m o s t   c o m m o n    for    s u c h  b l o c k    t o d a y?

The original string above reliably caused AISE

In my opinion, this is ridiculous!

Every word in that string is common... there is something about the combination of bits that sets off the error.
